At @weeatgame, we’re teaming up with private companies and community groups to reduce the gap between men and women in online work. To understand this gap better, we need to know how online work platforms function. In a recent study we did with Nikore Associates, we looked closely at how these platforms work. We found that there’s a three-way relationship in the platform economy: the platform itself, the people who work on it, and the customers who use it. The platform connects customers who need a service with workers who can provide it. The platform economy has big potential for helping women financially and encouraging them to start their own businesses. But getting involved in this economy isn’t easy. Women are powerful drivers of innovation and growth, but there are systemic and societal hurdles keeping them from reaching their full potential. On the supply side, women’s workforce participation is limited to certain job roles due to various barriers, from unpaid domestic and care responsibilities to safety concerns. As Sri Lanka is still grappling with the economic crisis, the demand for healthcare services from the household sector would decrease due to: ● reduced income ● higher prices of healthcare products and services ● loss of insurance coverage resulting from job losses. IPS’ annual flagship publication “Sri Lanka: State of the Economy 2023”, identifies that negative behavioural changes are likely to emerge within the household sector due to financial stress. These changes would have a detrimental effect on health outcomes, particularly regarding non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as such behavioural changes would increase the severity of NCDs risk factors. For example, in the face of escalating food prices, individuals may opt to cut down or compromise the quantity and quality of their food or resort to cheaper, unhealthy options. Economic recessions and related factors such as unemployment, income decline, and unmanageable debts are also strongly linked to poor mental well-being, substance-related disorders, and more. While this calls for significant investment in controlling NCD risk factors, the 2024 Budget noticeably lacks allocations for managing NCD risk factors.
