It's deciduous beech - or 'fagus' - time! The crinkled leaves of this Tassie icon is currently transforming the landscape into brilliant autumnal colours, before it descends into 'hibernation' for our cold season. The fagus is a paleoendemic - that is, an ancient species that was once widespread across the whole landscape, way back when Tassie was still connected to Antarctica (it's been found in the fossil record from 80 million years ago)! It’s here! “The changing of the Fagus” signals the transition into the cooler months. Over the rest of April and most of May the small, crinkled, heart shaped leaves of the Nothofagus gunnii (Deciduous beech) will flush into brilliant yellows, oranges, vermilions, and rust colours before falling off. It’s an autumnal shift in colour not usually associated with Australia yet down here in Tasmania we're privileged to be home to the only native cold-deciduous plant in the country! One of the hotspots for viewing this spectacle is right here within the Derwent catchment at Mount Field National Park! Tasmania's beloved nothofagus gunnii, otherwise known as fagus, tanglefoot, and deciduous beech. Endemic to small pockets the highlands of Tasmania, this ancient Gondwanan relic is the only deciduous tree native to the southern hemisphere. This is the only tree species I use a mold to create jewellery with - each single leaf is cut from a rosette of four (as seen in the necklace of the last image). I know our northern counterparts may find this strange... but here in Australia, we have one true temperate deciduous native tree - Nothofagus gunnii, native to my home state of Tasmania :) It is something of a ritual here in Tasmania to travel inland especially to catch the 'turning of the fagus' in autumn. It's got a beautiful and characteristic leaf shape. A former work colleague of mine was after a pattern for one, and as it turns out there weren't many out there ... so here is a somewhat stylised attempt to fill the void (I tried to keep it easier to stitch and wanted to get all of the colours in!). I published it in my store this evening.
