The Camden Talks Climate series in partnership with CamdenCAN and the Town continues by welcoming Blake Sanborn of @richardsonassociates_me for a talk on Thursday, May 16 about resilient waterfront design transformations. Flooding is hitting Camden close to home, as it is for many Maine communities. Blake Sanborn has partnered with communities around the country to co-create actionable plans to address flood concerns and authored design strategies that map out incremental steps to a more resilient future. In his talk, Sanborn will take a look at how landscape architects address flooding while building connectivity, habitat, public art, biodiversity, knowledge, wellness, and places to gather. His talk will feature examples spanning from mega-projects in major cities to a small public schoolyard retrofit. Sanborn now makes Camden his home, and is keenly interested in how Camden approaches the questions facing the harbor and the many opportunities presented by both sea level rise and repeated high-rainstorm flooding. This program is hybrid. As a child, Jim Moore had the opportunity to visit a noted news photographer’s darkroom, which sparked a lifelong interest in cameras and photography. In 1940, he moved to Rockland with his new bride, Cecile, where he became Correspondent Reporter/Photographer for the Portland Press Herald’s Rockland office, and represented other Gannett Publishing papers in Maine. During his career, he distinguished himself as a photojournalist, receiving local and national awards for his work. He worked with fellow Midcoast photographers Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry to publish Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. Moore died in 2001. The Penobscot Marine Museum was able to acquire nearly 2000 of his large format negatives in 2022; these images are predominantly maritime-themed. The lion’s share of his archive resides at the Rockland Historical Society. The two institutions have joined forces to create this exhibit of Moore’s maritime photographs. The show was guest-curated by Maine wooden boat expert Maynard Bray. Join @penobscotmarinemuseum Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for an illustrated talk on Tuesday, April 16, at 6:30 PM, “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent.” The presentation will explore Moore’s life and work as a denizen of Midcoast Maine. This event is presented in conjunction with the “Jim Moore: Midcoast Correspondent” exhibit from the Penobscot Marine Museum in the Picker Room Gallery during the month of April. This is a hybrid event and will take place in person in the Picker Room as well as on Zoom. from our friends at @soalliance Scientists estimate approximately 50-80 percent of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere comes from the ocean. Because the ocean is invisible and inaccessible to most people it is often overlooked as to the vital resource it is. We must all contribute to protecting this incredible ecosystem. A few ways you can help: -Reduce energy consumption -Make safe sustainable seafood choices or don’t eat seafood -Use fewer plastic products -Help clean beaches -Buy sustainable pet food (a lot of it is from seafood by catch) -Travel responsibly, the cruise industry is very damaging to the ocean -Educated yourself about oceans and marine life #climateweek #maritimemonth #oceansRclimatesolutions

Today highlighting the sea as a climate solution! Had the chance to visit the GeniLac construction site today. The technology could be a potential model for the energy transition in the Pacific Islands. GeniLac is an innovative 100% renewable energy network in Geneva, Switzerland harnessing thermal energy from Lake Leman to heat and cool buildings. With significant energy efficiency and reduction of emissions, the project highlights the untapped potential for sea and lake-source water for green climatization of our built environment. Water is pulled from the lake at a depth of 47 metres, where the water remains at a constant 7 degrees Celsius year-round. The water is piped into an underground reservoir on land. Replacing conventional air-conditioning and heat boiler systems, the lake water passes through a heat exchanger, which transfers its thermal energy to the water circulating in the building's cooling systems via a network of pipes to cool buildings, while heat pumps are employed in the winter. Though not a new concept, using lakes and seas for cooling needs in buildings is vastly untapped. A study by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) identified more than 100 cities in 20 countries, mainly small island nations, as suitable locations for such systems. Energy Efficiency journal reported that just 1m3 of seawater in a thermal energy plant can provide cooling energy equivalent to a solar power plant the size of 68 football fields or 21 wind turbines. The Pacific Islands have had to grapple with how to define their maritime zones as their islands shrink due to sea-level rise caused by climate change. Maritime zones are currently drawn using “baselines” flowing from the boundaries of their land, or the low-water line along the coast, under the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS), but this means shrinking maritime zones for the nations as shores are receding. In 2021, Pacific Island Forum leaders issued the Declaration on Preserving Maritime Zones in the Face of Climate Change-Related Seas-Level Rise to maintain their zones even as the shapes of their islands change with negotiations still in progress. map image courtesy of spc.int #sealevelrise #maritimemonth #maritimeboundaries #sinkingislands

#MaritimeMonth Next time you're in The Gables' accounting room, be sure to take a close look at this exquisite painting. It depicts a full starboard side view of a three-masted American barque facing right and sailing under full sail. If you look closely, you can see six human figures on board. Painted in white on the hull is the partial name 'Sophro'. On the horizon towards the right there is a stern view of another American ship. The bottom edge of the painting has a black band with gold lettering "E.A. Emmerton, Master, Sophronia Salem, Painted Nov. 1850." For #MaritimeMonth, we wanted to spotlight this incredibly rare ships logbook from 1811. It logged the voyages of the ship 'Boston' and is made of a heavy canvas (sailcloth) stitched together by hand. It details the journey of the Ship Boston from Naples to Gallipoli, to Gibraltar, towards London with a layover in Plymouth, to Portsmouth, to London at Tower Gate. The large format is unusual and the cover is unusual - truly fascinating to explore! #maritime #shiplog #1800s #ocean #history #artifact #h7g #7gables #thehouseofthesevengables #archives #history #collections #online #digitize #oldbooks #books

It's #MaritimeMonth and we're focusing on our climate change initiatives! As higher tides batter our sea walls and increased rainstorms flood our basements, we here at the Gables take the challenge of climate change seriously. One of our three main risk areas is the impact of rougher seas and higher tides on our seawall. This recent video shows the dangers of nor'easters to our sea wall and how important (and costly!) it is to maintain this structure as a front-line defense against the rising tides. We hope to be an example and leader to other historic sites located in vulnerable coastal regions, and use our findings to educate about the impacts of climate change on preservation. To donate to this worthy cause, come to our fundraiser, 'Sips by the Sea', on September 10th! #DYK: The Port of Corpus Christi’s “Bascule Bridge Bottleneck” resulted from an increasing volume of ships transiting the Corpus Christi Ship Channel as well as growing vehicular traffic over the bridge in the 1950s, leading to its eventual removal and replacement with the Harbor Bridge. #FlashbackFriday #OurPCCAStory #VoyagesAhead #MaritimeMonth

As part of the Camden Public Library’s celebration of National Poetry Month and Maritime Month, the library welcomes writer Nick Stone for a special online event to introduce his new book, "SEAWARD: A Lyrical Memoir." Check out what 2013 presidential inaugural poet Richard Blanco @poetrichardblanco has to say about the book: "As Jorge Luis Borges noted, poetry should 'touch us physically, as the presence of the sea does.' Nick Stone’s heartful and tenderly rendered collection certainly touches us powerfully in this way, embracing us with a life fully lived through all the wonders that poetry awakens in us." Visit the "What's Happening" Adult Events Calendar at librarycamden.org to register for your Zoom link to attend. Maritime Month at the library is generously sponsored by Camden Riverhouse Hotel & Inn. @camdenmaine #poetry #nationalpoetrymonth #maritimemonth #nickstone #seaward #inspiredbythesea #camdenpubliclibrary #poet #poetryreading #mainepoet

McKnight’s presentation will explore how the study of seabirds can shed light on events occurring beneath the opaque sea surface.
