”Älgen”, två meter lång och 130 kg tung. Min boss på vaktmästeriet när jag var lien valp i gabardin, precis som Travolta, i tab-krageskjorta, köpte musik och kläder för pengarna och var mobbad av Kånken-radikalerna i älghudsryggsäckar. Älgen var även dörrslusk på det oerhört chica och mondäna Lord Ace-discot vid torget. Där hade jag friplåtar varje kväll och gjorde mina Bag Of Tricks (diskot blev sedemera porrklubb. Sta´n var i framkant även där…). Här är hans historia om hur allt började med dans- och discovågen i vårat land på 70-talet. Möjligen sann: En snubbe vid namn Sidney kom till Sverige från Nigeria och jobbade med att städa Gröna Lunds toaletter. För att göra arbetet roligare började han spela maracas och blåsa visselpipa under kvällspassen och blev snart uppskattad av gästerna: ”- Vilken tokig neger", sa folk och så fick jag mer dricks än de vita pojkarna. Till slut gick även tjejer på herrtoaletten för att få se mig uppträda. Då föddes idén om ett diskotek. As a most versatile musician, he had played and recorded almost every style of music you care to mention - Soul, Reggae, Jazz, Spirituals, Blues, African, Electro. Etc…Originally trained in classical piano, his musical career began in Brussels and Paris in the 1950s. The 1960s finds him in Congo as a member of African Jazz led by Joseph Kabasele (Le Grand Kalle). He formed his own band in Cameroon in 1963 and then moved to Paris in 1965. For the Manu 76 album we head off to (predictably) the year of 1976, still in Paris. Four years after its international breakthrough with the hit Soul Makossa, Manu actually recorded two studio albums that year. Here he assembles a supremely talent bunch of musicians including Jo Tongo on bass, Slim Pezin on guitar, Lucien Dobat (from Kassav) on drums, Alex Francfort on piano and even Georgia Dibango, 7 years old, on the guest vocals among many others. This six tracks album is made of straddling series of styles from the Soukouss Beats of Bokilo’s Boogie and Qui est fou de qui? – Chouchou, the Afro Boogie Jazz of the highly catchy Mimbo, the driving Afro Future-Jazz of Mouvement Ewondo, the pensive soundtrack moods of Besoka On Salsa or the bombastic Afro-Funk Soul Angola. This week we’re highlighting Central & West African classic groovy records. These artist were the blueprint to the current “Afrobeats” and “Amapiano” wave. Some of them were even classified as the genre “Afrobeat” 40+ years ago - Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa”, probably one of the greatest records coming out of that region , was later reinterpreted by Michael Jackson on “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” and sampled on Jay-Z’s “Face Off”. - Bunny Mack’s “Let Me Love You”. Later sampled by Wale on “My Sweetie” early in his career, as an ode to his West African roots. - Meiway “200% Zoblazo”. - Last but not least, Fela Kuti’s “Zombie”.
