Art teacher Ms. Marlies did a light experiment with the grade 1s before the rain came. She showed how sunlight bends when it passes through a glass prism and crystals, revealing a rainbow. 🌈Rainbows are made up of 7 colors that are always in the same order. Our grade 7s visited Sharjah Safari, the largest safari in the world outside Africa. It's such a great opportunity to see native African birds, reptiles and mammals. Our students loved seeing elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, crocodiles, storks and more in environments similar to their natural environment. Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) are a high point on our calendar. Parents meeting with their children's teachers is vital to understanding our students better and providing the support they need. To celebrate Earth Day our students got to plant trees! 🌳 Ms. Emma explained how young Ghaf trees, the national tree of the UAE, have thorns around their stems to protect themselves from being eaten by animals, so be careful when planting! Students then had the option to eat a date but save the pit to plant, water and watch grow into a date palm. 🌱🌴 If we want to create a future where our children become good stewards of the earth, we need to be intentional about how we educate them. Today we ended Green Month with Lights Out Day. 💡❌ We practiced conserving electricity and using as few electrical devices as possible. Most non-renewable sources of energy produce pollution and release greenhouse gases like carbon into the atmosphere. By using less energy, we can reduce our carbon footprint. Laptops, iPads and projectors were on minimal use with "battery saver modes" on. Blinds and windows were open and AC and lights were off. We are #DoingOurShare in protecting our environment. World Water Day 💧Of the waters occupying 70% of the earth’s surface, only 3% is considered freshwater. Furthermore, about 2.6% of this freshwater is inaccessible to humans. Grade 9 genetics lab 🧪🧬🍓 Grade 9 students did a DNA extraction lab using crushed strawberries. DNA stores and transmits the genetic information that tells cells which proteins to make and when to make them. Using a buffer solution that destroys and removes the cell membranes from the cells, the strawberry DNA was released into the solution. Isopropanol was then poured into the mixture, forming a layer on top of the strawberry mixture where a white, stringy precipitate containing DNA began to form. Biomimicry is the practice of learning from and mimicking the strategies found in nature to solve human problems, emulating natural designs and processes to find innovative and sustainable solutions. Our middle school STEM class researched some of the problems that we face in the UAE: the high salt content in the oceans 🌊, how to go about reforesting the desert areas 🏜🌴, and the problem of litter 🗑. The groups investigated different ways that nature deals with similar issues, and using biomimicry, they suggested strategies and processes that would help solve these human problems in our communities and region. With the month of Ramadan approaching, the "Haq Al Laila" celebration is part of an ancient Emirati heritage passed down by generations and celebrated every year. The event, which means 'For this Night', is traditionally celebrated in the middle of Sha'aban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. In the UAE, children wear traditional clothes and carry colorful woven bags, going door-to-door singing to get nuts and sweets. Last week we had the enormous privilege of having the UAE’s pioneering astronauts, H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, and Hazzaa Al Mansoori, visit WellSpring. Our ISS Space Science students had the opportunity to present some of their experiments to the astronauts and receive valuable feedback. @Astro_AlNeyadi and @Astro_Hazzaa then took to the stage to share their incredible stories of becoming UAE astronauts and answer questions from students. They left us inspired and motivated to commit to our goals, to work hard, and to always remain humble and teachable. Several WellSpring students and staff participated in the 12th Edition of the @rakmhsuofficial Mini-Marathon (4km) yesterday. It was an impressive event with the president of the University, RAK dignitaries and leaders of RAK police in attendance.
