The album sees the group's sound becoming more experimental, branching out from boogie rock and implementing jazz and musique concrète influences. A greater emphasis was placed on studio effects, like panning. Lead guitarist and vocalist Alvin Lee still composes the majority of the band's original material, but each member also gets their own solo spot on the album (usually around one to one-and-a-half minutes), writing or arranging their own piece: Lee has "Skoobly-Oobly-Doobob", keyboardist Chick Churchill has "I Can't Live Without Lydia", drummer Ric Lee has a percussive cover of "Three Blind Mice", and bassist Leo Lyons has "Faro". The best track on the album is definitely its closer, the blazing "Speed Kills", with its driving rhythm section and fiery guitarwork. Although its quality does fluctuate over its total runtime, Stonedhenge offers up excellent variety and shows that the band was not afraid to push contemporary boundaries in the British blues scene. El 17 de abril de 1970 los Ten Years After publicaban su cuarto álbum de estudio. Ten Years After fueron una de las grandes bandas de su época y su guitarrista Alvin Lee estaba considerado el guitarrista más rápido del momento. Album No.1079 is About Time by Ten Years After. This was another album I found at Ben's Antiques along. With the last 7 albums I've posted, and 3 other albums that will be my next posts. I had no clue on who this band was, and therefore, it was another one of those albums from the stacks of CDs I bought from Ben's Antiques that I was initially going to resell on eBay. However, there was something about the album's cover and its heavy choice of yellow that had me curious as to who this band was, and after looking up who they were and playing some samples from this album online, I knew that this was another keeper for me to look into. At the end of the day, I was definitely surprised with what I heard, and I found this album to be a pretty fantastic release. For those who don't know, Ten Years After is a blues rock band that initially broke up in the mid 70s, and after reforming in the late 80s, the band came together to create this very release that would be signified as their comeback. It features blues-tinged hard rock that sort of reminds me of ZZ Top during their 80s era, and with a few surprises that I didn't expect to hear from a band like this, I enjoy what this album has in store from the first note to the last. The guitar work coming from frontman Alvin Lee sounds fantastic as those electric riffs rock hard and are truly energized in party rock fashion and a few of these solos really took me by surprise because of how they are outstandingly pulled off like semi-heavy metal guitarist, and the keyboards and synths from Chick Churchill only reinforce the blues-riddled 80s sound really well. Also, the vocals from Alvin sound excellent in a sort of similar fashion to Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and he's a perfect fit to sing the songs that are represented here. My favorite songs from this album are "Highway of Love", "Let's Shake It Up", "Victim of Circumstance", "Saturday Night", "Bad Blood", "Working in a Parking Lot", and "Waiting for the Judgement Day". Legend has it that Ten Years After formed after its members serendipitously met at a bus stop and started talking music, turning out that they all played the blues. Although this is not exactly how it happened, the ease with which the Nottingham blues rock band came together and played so tightly does suggest an instant synergy. I consider Ten Years After to be in the top echelon of British Blues bands of the late '60s alongside Fleetwood Mac and Cream, although they do not receive nearly the recognition they deserve. Aside from having obviously one of the hottest guitarists of all time in Alvin Lee, they incorporated far more of a jazz feel than their contemporaries. Ten Years' self titled 1967 was the first album released on the Decca subsidiary Deram to hit the British charts (I have a well worn but beautiful OG copy here). Produced by Mike Vernon, this album is a British Blues classic. Lee is tight and controlled without the extended solos he'd later become famous for. But his tone and attack are glorious. Theirs might be my favourite all time version of 'Spoonful'. The band flirts with Memphis Soul and jazz, especially when organist Chick Churchill steps up to jam with Lee. Happy Birthday Chick Churchill!!! Churchill began playing the piano at the age of six and studied classical music until he was fifteen. He became interested in blues and rock music, and joined his first band Sons of Adam in Nottingham. Churchill then met Alvin Lee of The Jaybirds. At first, Churchill joined the band as its road manager, but he soon became the keyboard player. In November 1966 there was a name change to Ten Years After. Born in Nottingham England, ALVIN LEE began playing guitar age 13 and formed the core of the band Ten Years After by aged 15. Originally influenced by his parent's collection of jazz and blues records, it was the advent of rock and roll that truly sparked his interest and creativity, and guitarists like Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore provided his inspiration. Appearing at the famed Woodstock Festival, Lee's virtuoso performance was one of the highlights and remains today a standard for many other guitarists. Captured on film in the documentary of the festival, his inspired playing catapulted him into superstardom, and soon the band was playing arenas and stadiums around the globe. Although Lee later lamented that he missed the intimacy of smaller venues, there is no denying the impact the film made in bringing his music to a worldwide audience. Lee's overall musical output includes more than 20 albums, including 1985's Detroit Diesel and the back to back 90s collections of Zoom and 1994 (I Hear You Rocking). Guest artists on both albums include George Harrison, whose brilliant slide guitar perfectly complements Lee's lead. Ten Years After's 6th studio album - A Space in Time!! Original 1971 copy This was a good album, best I've heard from them thusfar. Liked the space rock vibes on some of the songs, and of course "I'd Love to Change the World" was killer diller 👌 Definitely highly recommend checking out this album, I mean it's got a wide variety of genres from psychedelia to blues rock to even a jazz jam session! A departure in style from their previous albums, A Space in Time is less 'heavy' than previous albums and includes more acoustic guitar, perhaps influenced by the success of Led Zeppelin who were mixing acoustic songs with heavier numbers. It reached No.17 on the Billboard 200. The 3rd track on the album, "I'd Love to Change the World", is also their biggest hit. By combining a melodic acoustic chorus with challenging electric guitar riffs, they managed to produce a sound that hit No.10 in the charts in Canada and No.40 in the US. Although this was their biggest hit, they rarely played it live. "Baby Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You" also charted, peaking at No.61 in the US, and reaching No.54 in Canada. Happy 80th birthday to Leo Lyons, born on this day in 1943. Leo David William Lyons is best known as the bassist for Ten Years After. He became a professional musician at the age of 16 and as a founding member of the band Ten Year After has been an on stage eyewitness to some of the most pivotal moments in Rock and Roll history. The band started out as “The Jaybirds” in 1962 and in1967 with a name change to Ten Years After, a residency at London’s famous Marquee Club and a debut album, the band quickly built a huge following in Europe. Bill Graham heard a copy of the band’s first album and immediately sent a letter offering to book Ten Years After into his historic venues in San Francisco and NY. He has worked with Ten Years After, UFO, Magnum, Waysted, Procol Harum, Frankie Miller, and Richard and Linda Thompson. “Stonedhenge” is the 2nd studio album released from Ten Years After, released in February of 1969. Pictured here first is the original US release which has a different cover from the UK release also pictured here. The tune "I'm Going Home" from Ten Years After's previous release hit the charts, in the U.K. The band's US success came at Woodstock a year after the band’s debut release. The band was starting to experiment with variations of their boogie rock format. Stonedhenge is the result of this, and producer Mike Vernon helped direct the band more toward a jazz and blues direction. They also experimented with somenearly panning and tape manipulation too. A good example is the opener, “I Can’t Live Without Lydia,” and it’s piano jazz boogie. You have “Skoobly-Oobly-Doobob,” complete with the accompanying scatting to the rhythm of Alvin Lee’s picking is fun, and of course the best track here is “Hear Me Calling.” However the 8 plus minute track “No Title” is another fun ballsy blues track, finishing the album with “Speed Kills,” which starts with a chugging train sound intro, and fades into the kind blues you’d expect from TYA! #leolyons #tenyearsafter #stonedhenge
