16 years ago this week was the first ever Boogie Tots class. For those of you who are new to us, let me tell you how it all started. When my son, Ben was small I longed to take him to a class just like mine, he loved to dance and sing, his favourite music to listen to was Queen, Michael Jackson and the Crazy frog We enjoyed many classes together, sing and sign and various Playgroups and yes we loved them but none of these encouraged him to explore his creativity, build his confidence and just let him have fun. I took him to a theatre club at the age of 3, thinking this would be the sort of class he needed but he was told to stand still on his spot, which he couldn’t do, he wanted to dance and sing and not wait to do so. So I decided to set up Boogie Tots, for Ben, because surely there were other children just like my son. When the first class came we had many people join us, it was £4 per child (which seemed a lot at the time) The idea was Ben and I would teach the parents and tots a routine to Valerie by Mark Ronson, simple!! Wrong, I quickly learnt not every child is like Ben and this wasn’t as easy as I thought. We quickly changed the session and sat down to sing some nursery rhymes, one mum suggested Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and I didn’t even know it. It was a disaster! Still, we came back the following week this time the numbers were less but we carried on improving the class as we went. If nothing else, it was great bonding for Ben and I. After trying for many weeks I was just about ready to give up on Boogie Tots, it wasn’t really making any money and I was finding it difficult to fill up the 45 mins with songs and games to keep everyone entertained. That was until I had a call from Surestart, they’d heard about the class and thought it would work perfectly in their centres. I went in for a meeting and took Ben with me and to this day I’m convinced he is the reason they hired us. They fell in love with this confident, knowledgeable little boy who practically sold Boogie Tots to them!!! Once upon a time, two women from Newbury got so fed up on crappy markets, they decided to create their own! Now, this was a crazy idea. Thought up between two women who had only met a couple of times and had never organised their own market before. But they dreamed of a place where awesome makers could get out there and local people could actually find them! They dreamed of a market that was fun, and alternative with pick n mix, great music and a great location! Then they found the place... They decided to go for it. Contacted the people they needed to and asked to meet, to tell them about their crazy dream. At the meeting, they spoke through their plans, explained all their thoughts and tried to make sure they had thought of EVERYTHING to impress them... 'Let's do it!' Colin and Katy said the magic words and renARTgades became real! After the first market they knew they'd created something special and soon they had created a community of the most awesome makers! Gin o'clock was formed, early mornings were had, more and more independent businesses were brought in and included. When The Globe Garden closed, it was a sad day but something more special had been created. And it was all because of those magic words said by Colin and Katy 💙 renARTgades now lives on over 2 years later and this might be just the start of something really big... Our eternal gratitude to the absolute legends that are Colin and Katy, and ALL @theglobenewbury 💙 From supplying us with gin o'clock, carrying sofas, and climbing up ladders to turn on lights after only 45 minutes sleep... We owe them everything. renARTgades might be quiet currently, but mark my words we aren't going anywhere. There's big things coming for us and it's all because of these two absolute LEGENDS. They are now moving on to new things and we refuse to accept that we won't have The Globe in our lives anymore... But from us and all the renARTgades we wanted to wish them well and say a MASSIVE THANK YOU for absolutely changing our lives (and that really isn't overemphasizing it...) TBT to the OG, the DAY THAT STARTED IT ALL - some random flea market in Lutherville 10 years ago. On a whim we decided to try and sell the soap that we had been making as a hobby and we paid $10 to set up at this flea market at a church (and it really was a flea market). Pat made the displays out of wood from some old pallets and we printed the labels on cardstock and wrapped them around the soap bars. The chalkboard sign is blank because we had still not decided how much to charge when this picture was taken lol. I remember we were psyched as hell to make a whopping SEVENTY FIVE dollars and so grateful that people were willing to pay money for something we made (still a feeling we get). Most of all, it was fun, so we decided to look for other market opportunities and reinvest everything we made back into the business to see how far we could take it. Well, here we are. Five years after that market we opened our first retail location. Two years after that we opened our production facility in Woodberry, and then our Lexington Market location. Our rise was by no means meteoric and it took a lot of work, sacrifice, time, and a LOT of help and support from our community. We are often asked when we knew that we had “made it”, or that this was something we could do full time instead of just on the side. I always disappoint everyone when I tell them that that point never came - we never knew and to be honest we still don’t. But 5 years ago it became clear to us that we were never going to make it by hedging our bets, and if we ever wanted our tiny Soap Stand to grow up we would have to take the risk of growing it. We’ve definitely had hard times and the challenges haven’t stopped coming, but this little soap company has always made us so happy and proud that we wouldn’t trade it for anything. There is something so wholly satisfying about making things - whether it’s bars of soap or a whole-ass business - that there’s no way we could ever go back. Hello there 👋 it’s been a while! But as I gear up to take part in a Reels challenge next week (courtesy of @businesssecretsclub ) I thought it was timely to do a little intro / how it all started post 💖. My entrepreneurial journey started back in June 2014 when, with the help of my sister, I launched a tiny range of coffee ☕️ tins on @notonthehighstreet as a test. The tins were themed around the idea that there are moments in life when coffee helps - the ‘3AM Blend’ for new parents (pictured here) was one of them. We received our first order within 2 hours of going live and a few more shortly after so took it as a sign the concept had potential 💪. This was the start of our SISTIR brand which today forms a key part of our larger company structure. Over the years, SISTIR has grown and evolved and our products have created ‘a latte’ smiles ☺️ as a result of their light hearted nature and fun copy. And as SISTIR has grown, so too has our awareness of the challenges women face in the coffee industry. Being a female founded business, we are motivated to help drive change in this area to STIR things up and make a difference, no matter how small… …as a start, we are proactively finding ways to bring more women into our supply chain. Last year we soft launched a new coffee called ‘She’s Fa-brew-lous’ (also pictured here). ‘She’ is a female farmed, female roasted and female retailed coffee and marks an exciting first for us 💕. It was one of the worst disasters in U.S. history. Weirdly, It’s also how HAI started. Just three weeks after the accident, HAI’s founders received a call from the Department of Energy to write a history about the incident. What a strange request… a history about something that was so recent it was considered current events. HAI founders, Philip L. Cantelon, Rodney P. Carlisle, Richard G. Hewlett, and Robert C. Williams, took the idea and ran with it. March Meet The Maker Day 8 - Our Brand Our story began back in 2020, when the pandemic hit. Due to a serious lung condition (hence, “wheezy”), I went into shielding. I knew that I might be shielding for a number of weeks/months, so I needed a project, something that would keep my hands busy. I have always been interested in crafts but had never tried any form of beadwork - what better time to learn! With a few packs of beads, a needle, thread and YouTube, I quickly got the hang of the basics. Once shielding ended, I passed my new love for beading onto my partner in crime, who has ended up loving it just as much. Due to an unfortunate injury in summer 2020, I couldn’t return to the career I had before I went into shielding, so we decided to take a leap of faith and take our beadwork to the public. How did we come to exist? 🤔 Well let me tell you that the job market might have been a contributing factor, but in reality it was my yearning to create. 🖌 The idea started during our last move. Our story... 🐾 It all started with an eye-opening trip to the North of Greece, stumbling across a traditional tavern with a spectacular view and authentic Greek cuisine. We were joined by a furry guide, that lead us up the mountains, named—yup, you guessed it—Tzatziki! 🐶 This trip was too special for it to be a distant memory, we simply had to combine all aspects from this unforgettable experience and bring it to the UK. How Freed Souls Coffee started 💕 A little background about me and my coffee obsession. I have always been SO obsessed with coffee for almost my entire life. I started sneaking off and drinking instant coffee whenever I would go over to a friend’s house in grade 6. After that I always had to start my day with some sort of coffee. I never really thought anything more about coffee until 2019. In 2019 before the pandemic hit, my mom and I decided to go on a two week getaway trip to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. Now I won’t lie when I’m on vacation I’m the type of person that likes to try and schedule/see everything one can possibly see everyday. So being a massive coffee fan when I saw the opportunity arise to go check out a coffee farm in San Sebastián I immediately signed us up for it. The 1 hour bus ride to San Sebastian felt a little sketchy at first but once you arrive and you see the town in person it’s so breathtaking behind words. Seeing the full process for the first time of how coffee beans are grown/harvested/roasted had me mesmerized to the point thats all I could think about for months after the trip upon returning home. It wasn’t until that moment that I realized there is so much more to coffee than just instant coffee. Specialty coffee is a whole other world. Once we were back home I immediately started looking into and researching everything I could about how to start a coffee company, I just knew this is what I was meant to do and I knew there was no better person to start a business with then my mom. Flash forward to now in 2024, we are in our third year being in business. This is our first year running Freed Souls Coffee full time which is truthfully both exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. We have learnt SO much about not only the coffee industry but about what it’s like to run a business and what it really takes. I like to call Freed Souls Coffee my baby because it’s truly such a life passion of mine. I have big dreams of where I want to take this business that I can’t wait to share with everyone! We are working hard behind the scenes and I’m hoping soon to have some sort of spot where we can serve our coffee ☕️

Pictured is Minka, the cat that an entire community came together to help when she was found wandering for weeks with a leg hold trap. 🪤 In early 2021, about a dozen TNR advocates, colony caretakers, and rescuers met to discuss how to address the issue of limited resources for sick and injured community cats in the Cincinnati area. This group recognized the barriers to getting community cats vet care - the lack of funding, and the lack of veternarians who would treat community cats. Under the guidance of the leadership of another local reputable rescue, the next 18 months were spent creating Community Cat Network of Cincinnati. CCN’s mission to help community cats in need is paired with our determination to operate with transparency, integrity, consistency, and in a spirit of collaboration with other local organizations. Our first collection was based on the most basic concept of design elements. The dot and the line. It featured an interplay of stripes and polka dots! Over the remainder of the winter and into the spring we are going to reintroduce ourselves and how we got into the apples and blueberries at our farm. In between we will try and do a weekly post of what is happening at the farm. We did do a similar post last year so hope this isn’t too repetitive. We had several questions last season of where we came from overnight with an already established property. For our new customers, followers, and new Islanders we hope to help you get to know us and trust us for some of your produce, while at the same time fill in a few of the gaps for people since we have owned the property for more than a decade, and previously operated under a different name. Our goal this season is to explain a bit about the property, how we got this lovely acreage to farm and why we enjoy doing it. We started our original farm called the “Olde MacKenzie Farm” in 2010, which was just up the road from where we currently are. We grew and experimented with over 200 varieties of vegetables, had laying hens, and some pigs. Our fresh veggies were originally offered through a CSA, and then converted to a veggie box program with Go PEI. We also supplied multiple restaurants (Terra Rouge, Culinary Institute, Red Shores, Merchant Man, Gahan, Brickhouse and more). Through the use of an unheated greenhouse and hydroponic system we were able to offer fresh salad greens year round. Throwback to when we took Specialty Coffee Association roaster certification classes at the @swisswater facility in Bunaby, BC. We decided to "test the waters" (no pun intended) with taking these comprehensive and highly informative classes to see what coffee roasting was all about. Best decision ever! Knowledge is power, and we wanted to start off on solid footing as we embarked on this dream of roasting coffee and opening a roastery. There is so much to learn about...growing, harvesting, processing, exporting, importing, buying, grading, roasting, cupping, brewing, and of course, decaffeinating. Always training always working hard and now plays Rugby. Boot camps at Rowlands Gill Park. Worked at Crisis in Newcastle providing Fitness classes and also at Scotswood Road in Virginia House. Not forgetting providing online classes during covid. This was so hard its not the same exercising infront of a camera but we worked hard and hopefully kept you all motivated and helped you through the weirdest time ever! We have done many mobile Personal Training sessions and have worked our butt's off. At one point we even delivered 5000 leaflets and didn't hear back from any - you live and learn. Now we have Burnopfield Victory Club and still going strong.
