Our Roots Connect Us, 2023-2024 13’ x 3’ x 3’ Stoneware, silver wire, and deer skin leather cordage My family has lived in Oklahoma for over 184 years after being removed from our ancestral land. I am the seventh generation and my children are the eighth, I represent the generations by having eight wild green onions suspended by braids and all connected together by the roots. I come from a background of endurance and silent wounds, the wild onion bulbs and stocks are visibly scarred, cut, cracked, healing and regrowing. The two onions in the center represent the eighth generation, my children, who are growing and twisting together unscathed. I use symbols of wild green onions because growing up I was told that wild onions outside of natural germination were brought to Oklahoma by Indigenous people on the trail of tears during the removal era. Wild green onions are often deemed as weeds in western society when it comes to maintaining yards rejecting the food sovereignty potential. This leads to harsh removal of wild onions from the land, but usually this removal is unsuccessful since once the bulb’s roots are firmly planted, it will thrive. I use this perennial act of resistance as a parallel to my family and ancestors’ resilience since we once were removed from the land, and still continue to thrive year after year despite the harsh conditions we’ve had to endure. Generational. When you look at a landscape, it is easily understood and hard to imagine, people have stood here and done this before. Whether you're standing on a hillside overlooking a valley, or in a valley, looking at a creek. You picked that spot for a reason, and it's been that way for generations. Decades, centuries, or millennia of ancestors who have occupied a similar spot, and sometimes for a similar goal. When you can see the next generation following suit and picking up the torch, it's as if the next tooth in the cog has meshed in a seamless transition as knowledge is passed on and shared among peers. It can feel as if you're entering the twilight of an era, as you realize you've been in this gear for some time and your turn to carry the load will end. But there is beauty in knowing that the job of furthering something bigger than you, will continue to perpetuate the generational tradition of standing in one spot.

I came across this paragraph in 1979 when Bessie and I were in Vancouver, BC. It has been my life verse since then—the next generation! As I look at Christian history, it seems to be history that only takes care of the present generation, not the next one. The seventeenth century in England and Scotland was a time of revival until there was a Christian king after the glorious revolution of 1688. The next two generations were of great moral decay. It ended with John Wesley and George Whitefield, Count Zinzendorf, Jonathan Edwards, and David Brainerd. This included the Wesleyan Revival in England and the Great Awakening in the American Colonies. Then, after the American Revolution, there was another generation of moral decay. Then another awakening occurred off and on from 1790 to 1858 where a half a million people were converted in the Northern States. Other evangelicals (Moody, Torrey, Sunday, and Billy Graham) had an effect, but in between them and now after them there is more moral decay. Here is my point. Presently there are many evangelistic organizations in the United States, and many evangelistic mega churches, seminaries, and Christian schools. Yet something is very wrong. The moral decadence in the United States today is great in quality and quantity. Christian families are not reaching their own children, and churches are not reaching the next generation.
