I know these may look ‘gruesome’, but in truth, they look AMAZING. Muffin’s wounds are healing so very well. There is less bone exposed on her face each day and there is now NO bone exposed on her leg at all! We’ve been using a combination of manuka honey and calcium alginate to help with the healing process and it’s really earned its place with me. This is my first time working with CA and it’s amazing stuff - made from seaweed and promotes collagen creation. Mighty Muffin Warrior Princess update: It’s been an eventful few days. Muffin is doing well, she spiked a mild fever Tuesday night, but she’s eating and drinking like a champ still. Because she is currently stable, I did have her transferred from AERC St Paul to Southview Animal Hospital, where I also work, for her ongoing care. Her bill at AERC was unsustainable. We still really need your help to cover her bill. We are now looking at $9,500. Please, please keep sharing her story. This little fighter still needs us so much. Muffin had wounds debrided and washed out yesterday, the one next to her eye was particularly deep - reaching into her mouth - but she is still chatting, purring and asking for cuddles, along with eating the clinic out of house and home! The wound on her leg is healing very well, it has a lovely granulation and the bone has new tissue growth over it every day. We agreed to take them on as Lucky Dogs when we heard about their desperate need for help, their sister having already succumbed to this deadly virus. They are currently at the hospital, and their prognosis is cautiously optimistic. We said yes, despite being in dire need of funds. We have been trying to close intake for a while now because adoptions are at an all-time low with great, easy dogs sitting for months and even years at a time. But we could not let these puppies die, not on our watch. If you are able to contribute financially, we would be so grateful! If you can't, we understand; you can help by sharing to your page or with friends who may be able to donate or looking to adopt. We have had an unprecedented number of returns of Lucky Dogs by adopters unwilling or unable to fulfill their commitment to them despite having raised them from puppies. Those unpredictable returns and the low adoption rates mean we do not have room to bring up dogs from the south that we had already committed to prior to the returns; now, vetting and boarding bills are through the roof. Here at the rescue, every inch is taken up by dogs. With dogs not going home and space not opening up anytime soon that we can see, these bills will continue to increase because we will never back down on a commitment we already made...nor can we turn away the emergency cases desperately in need that no one else will take on. While others are taking on the easy to adopt puppies or designer breeds that are so in demand, we continue to be committed to those who need it most - the medical cases and adult dogs that others are overlooking. ✨Canemah has been diagnosed with EPM✨we won’t know for sure until blood results come back next week. We also don’t know if it came from the hay we bought, or if we do have a little possum running around. I’m scared. I’m afraid of her not allowing me to give her the needed treatments. I’m afraid that she won’t recover. I’m afraid I waited to long, because I believed the emergency vet on Friday that said ‘colic’. I’m afraid of time. The time it will take to heal her and take away from time other horses need and me. I’m mad that she’s sick. I’m mad that it’s a cruel sickness and that Canemah is confused and in pain and not able to be with her family, for who knows how long. So, another vet bill. I haven’t been able to come to the conclusion, with myself, if I made the correct decision, by not immediately taking her to our vet and calling a mobile vet instead. I’m torn… because, I know the trauma of travel for a wild horse and also she was sooooo weak! I did my best. I’m trying really hard to not beat myself up. Rescue is hard. We were recently the targets of a hate-motivated vehicle collision/hit-and-run, and we are required to pay a large sum for shared damages with a third vehicle involved. As you can see, Thomas hung out with us over the weekend and has become a different cat! On pain medications and antibiotics, he’s much more comfortable and has become very trusting with humans. He loves to roll on his back, ask for pets, and make us air biscuits. We consulted with our specialty surgeon, and the plan will be to amputate his left hind leg (given some neurologic damage from the pelvic fracture). His right rear leg actually appears quite stable! Thomas is getting laser therapy to help heal the wounds on his foot. I cannot thank everyone enough for their generosity so far. It is overwhelmingly wonderful and Thomas and I couldn’t be more grateful. WORTHY EMERGENCY VET VISIT: UPDATE #2 After talking with Dr. West, we feel it's best to move Worthy to Brazos Valley Equine Hospital for further treatment due to the clinic not being staffed overnight. Worthy will receive additional fluids and round the clock care there. He has had pain killers, 15000 mil of fluids and has been oiled and tubed 2x already. A few minutes ago he passed manure, but not enough. His vitals and blood work is still good. So we are cautiously optimistic at this point. Please continue to pray that this impaction breaks up and passes through. Because we are not yet sure of the exact amount needed to cover these expenses, we are going to continue to fundraise. 🆘 On Thursday June 1, 2023, about 7:45 am, the Gallery's two external HVAC units were vandalized in an unprovoked attack. The copper piping connecting each unit to the Gallery, as well as internal fixtures, were cut and stolen. These units service our two main public galleries, which are supposed to be maintained at 20 degrees C with 50% relative humidity in order to sustain art museum conditions. Both units have to be replaced immediately. The replacement cost with installation will be about $15,000. Funds raised will be dedicated to resolving this emergency issue. We have never used this kind of fundraising before but the situation is urgent. It's been a harrowing couple of days - on Tuesday, I trapped two senior community cats who were in very rough shape. Cutie, the tabby, was incredibly skinny and suffering some fur loss. Sweetie, the tortie, had a horrible swollen mass on the side of her face and wouldn't let anyone touch her. I brought them to the loving foster home of @jmcatlady, but Sweetie took a turn for the worse when a disturbing amount of blood was found in her crate. She was taken to the E.R., where the plan was to sedate her and examine her mouth area. It took a couple tries to sedate her, but they were finally able to see that she had a horribly infected tooth that had caused an abscess in her cheek. The doctor removed the tooth (the last one left except for her incisors) and lanced the abscess. Now she is back home and taking time to heal from this traumatic experience. Thank you so much to everyone who shared or donated to her fundraiser. The bill was close to $1800 so @poesrescuefund is continuing to fundraise for that, as well as Sweetie's ongoing care. Southeast Madagascar continues to struggle with dire food insecurity caused by the worst drought since the 1980s, the ongoing effects of COVID-19, and rising food prices.
