💡 If you had the chance to experience something for the first time again, what would it be and why? 💡 A few weeks ago, I was on @meettsx live authentic conversation series on YouTube (check it out if you haven't already!) Rikketta has a gift for helping people connect, and she created a deck of conversation cards to do just that. In the live, she pulled a card with this question on it for us to chat about. My answer was to go on my first date with my fiancé again. At the time, I thought it was just another date. I didn't have a lot of expectations, just wanted to connect and learn more about her. Being an ally to transgender and gender diverse folks goes way beyond just memorizing pronouns and chosen names. ‼ REMINDER ‼ Focus on what you can control! Sometimes I work with parents of trans kids or teachers that live in places where it is really restrictive and dangerous to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. It can be overwhelming to think about all the ways we have to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe. Teachers ask me, "but what can I do to keep my gender expansive students safe when I am legally bound to report them" Parents ask me, "How can I keep my queer child safe in school when school is an unaccepting environment?" These are extremely valid concerns, and I usually start with --- focus on what you CAN control. It is easy to get riddled with anxiety thinking about what we can't control. How would you respond? 💬 This is an actual question I’ve heard directed at a non-binary person. Remember that our gender expression (how we look on the outside) doesn’t always match how we feel about our gender internally. Clothes aren’t gendered. Colors aren’t gendered. The haircut we choose isn’t gendered. If we choose to wear fake nails, that isn’t gendered. The person this question was directed at was just trying to affirm their gender and it’s also possible they just enjoyed wearing what they were wearing. That doesn’t mean they were trying to “look like a girl.” They’re just trying to look like themself. We shouldn’t assume anyone’s gender just by looking at them, AND people can like what they like. True inclusion means everyone can participate, regardless of ability. Intersectionality teaches us that people's experiences are shaped by multiple overlapping identities, and we must address these intersections to create truly inclusive environments. Here are some ways organizations can integrate accessibility into their DEI efforts: Inclusive Design: Ensure websites, apps, and digital content are accessible to people with disabilities. Use tools like screen readers and provide captions for videos. Policy and Education: Develop and enforce policies that prioritize accessibility. "Diversity Goes to Work" is a podcast that centers on real, raw, and inherently human perspectives on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the world of work. Each episode seeks to deepen the conversation about our common humanity to improve the quality and outcomes of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. 🌏 It's Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! 🌏 Most people don't assume I'm Asian, but I am. My dad is Pakistani, and immigrated to the US before I was born. When he was coming to the US, he was told to Americanize himself and assimilate as much as possible to stay safe and blend in. That is something I didn't really understand when I was growing up, but in adulthood it always makes me sad to think about. He didn't share his culture with my family at all when I was a growing up. I only saw little glimmers of it when his dad (my grandfather) would come to visit us every few years or when a new South Asian restaurant would pop up in the city we lived in. Growing up separated from half of my culture was difficult and I often felt othered being mixed race. Only now as an adult have I had the opportunity to learn about what it means to be South Asian. It is something that I've put effort into connecting with as an adult, which has been a whole new journey of self-discovery. I feel lucky to have access to that part of myself now. My dad's experience is the experience of many immigrants living in the US. Even today. I wish it wasn't that way. This isn't the melting pot they say it is. #makemycityaccessible I have no friends with disability I am sure most of you don’t have one either. Probably not because of any unconscious biases but simply because in school, college or your workplace, you didn’t have persons with disability around you. When I was in high school, I had two seniors (sisters) who had muscular dystrophy. They would come with their mom who’d stay till school break. After they graduated from school, I was the only student with disabilities. When I changed schools for plus two, in my new school I was the only disabled student. Same with college. If there were any, I didn’t see them in classrooms or corridors. In my 25-plus years of work life, I have been the only employee with disability in the organisations I worked at. That’s the visibility of the 2.21 crore disabled population in India. Invisible and missing. Let’s change this by making our society accessible. When we have accessible infrastructure, it not only brings more disabled out of their homes but also the elderly, women with strollers, pregnant women, and people with health conditions. Someone asked me this question in a workshop not too long ago, and it isn't one I get that frequently, but I've definitely experienced folks getting hung up on using the term queer. Especially folks who are outside of the LGBTQ+ community. The word queer has a history of being used against the LGBTQ+ community as a slur, but it has since been reclaimed by the community and now is used as an umbrella term. In the 70's when it was reclaimed by LGBTQ+ activists, it was redefined as "...queer as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it." The word queer embodies so much; struggle, power, reclamation, and pushing back against the status quo. So the answer is yes, it is okay for people outside the LGBTQ+ community to use the word queer when describing the community (i.e. the queer community) or how someone identifies (protect queer kids). Tomorrow is @glsen Day of (No) Silence! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ The day of (no) silence was started in the 90’s by two college students to bring awareness to harassment and discrimination that LGBTQ+ people experience in schools. Every, April students would go through the school day without speaking, ending the day with a Breaking the Silence rally to bring awareness to the ways their schools and communities could become more inclusive. With the number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills being introduced every day, we are calling on our allies in schools to speak up and take action, hence the (no) silence part. For anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable speaking out, the option to participate in a silent protest remains available. This is a question I ask myself every time I start creating a workshop or a training. For me, it lays the foundation for every other part of the engagement for me. I care how people feel when they share space with me and how they feel afterwards. I want them to feel empowered (hence the name of my business) and I want them to feel more equipped to deal with the challenges that they'll face in the future. We'll always have challenges - no getting around that. It is how we deal with those challenges that matters. I've started to ask myself this question in my daily life too - how do I want my friends to walk away from me feeling? How do I want my loved ones to walk away from me feeling? How do I want strangers to walk away from me feeling? An ally is not what you are, but what you do. 💡 What is something you wish you learned earlier in life? 💡 I fully believe that at different points in my life I did what I could with what I knew and what I had, but sometimes I look back and think, "if I only would have known or understood this thing then..." Maybe things would have turned out differently. I have a lot of answers to this question, but the first one that comes to mind is I wish I learned how important boundaries are earlier in life. I don't think I even knew what boundaries around mental health and with friends and family were until after I graduated from grad school. I didn't know how to protect my peace, or even that I had peace to protect. I emphasize the importance of boundaries so much now in my own work and life because I know how important they are now.
