SHARON 🐾 Our resident mum at RSLT, Sharon is a full-time carer and dog lover who comes to class to enjoy the craic and give everything a good go! Sharon started CrossFit feeling very nervous about the classes, believing that she wouldn’t be able to do the exercises, but knew she had to try something new if she wanted to see any benefits. Having suffered from back problems, she was worried that this would flare up again if she pushed too hard or did certain exercises. Since joining CrossFit nothing has stopped her from doing what she loves, proving age is just a number! She shows that it’s mind over matter, and is now fitter and stronger than ever! A common debate is the one surrounding Protein supplements and whether or not they are a good addition to someone’s diet or whether someone should be using them even on days they aren’t training. The thing is, Protein serves benefits that go far beyond repairing muscle from Training. Protein helps with immunity, recovery from injury/sickness/surgery and muscle retention in ageing populations. The truth is, protein supplements will not have a negative impact on someone’s diet/health provided they are consumed as part of a whole/varied diet and not in place of whole sources of Protein. Issues begin when Protein Supplements are used heavily in place of whole foods which then limits the range of nutrients an individual can consume, as most whole sources of Protein provide nutritional benefits far past their Protein content. There are certain individuals who would specifically benefit from using Protein supplementation including athletes, those recovering from injury, illness or surgery, older or elderly populations and vegetarians/vegans. For athletes and those recovering from injury/illness/surgery, their Protein needs are higher than most and so obtaining their full requirement from whole foods along can often be unrealistic. For older and elderly populations, they tend to have a skewed distribution of daily protein with low amounts in Breakfast + Lunch and so adding in a Protein Shake with these meals would help them to increase their target. Vegans/Vegetarians should consider consuming a range of plant based Proteins to account for incomplete amino acid profiles. Training and living like a full time athlete does not line up with your goal of general health and well being. Excessive training hours, immense stress on your body, body work, injury prevention/dealing with injury, higher nutritional needs, extended recovery hours and a huge amount of sacrifice are only some of the things involved with being a full time athlete. In the CrossFit space, it’s so easy to get caught up in over training and devoting every hour of your day to the sport - but for the majority of people, this is not what CrossFit should be about. You are not a full time athlete. Chances are you don’t need individualised programming, a full cupboard of supplements or 6 days training in the week. To recover optimally from this demand on your body takes a lot of work. Most people do not have the capacity to do this (due to job pressures, family committments and other responsibilities) and so they end up constantly sick, injured or burnt out. For many, they need a Class WOD, attention to the basics of good nutrition and a good nights sleep. ⭐️Empowering Pregnancy⭐️ How Crossfit Kept Me Strong, Healthy, and Prepared for Motherhood “I attended classes at Crossfit Ireland regularly prior to becoming pregnant. I knew that I wanted to stay active during my pregnancy for both my body and my mind and I’m so glad I did! Pregnancy is a marathon and it really helps to continue strength training to support your body, deliver a baby and recover afterwards. I trained 2/3 times a week and I always felt better afterwards. It also helped alleviate any pain I was experiencing. The coaches always checked in on me throughout the classes and modified the exercises to ensure I was safe throughout.
