I had a chance to be apart of the Anti-Gun Violence Summit for the last two days and I can honestly say it was very informative , emotional, and needed. The artwork displayed those who lost their lives due to gun violence. Being a person who lost my father and uncle to gun violence this summit really helped me become aware of the resources that are available to help through trauma and I also met some of those who are directly affected by this gun violence. I apologize for not having all the organizations names and people who were in attendance. I would like to give a special shout-out to the youth that spoke on the panel today. Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in America. Not cancer or another disease, not car crashes, gun violence. In 2020 gun violence overtook car accidents becoming the leading COD for children from infancy - 19. Homicide by gun is the 2nd leading COD for pregnant & postpartum persons. The Veterans Administration confirms an estimated 22 veteran suicides daily, most by gun. 1 in 5 Americans has lost a loved one to gun violence. As of Sept 2023 there have been over 3193 deaths from gun violence & over 300 mass shootings in 🇺🇸 since 2018. About 1.4 million 🇺🇸 died from gun violence from 1968 - 2011 & rates are rising since. So can we use athletics to visualize the numbers? I could easily do a million steps with a goal of 10,000 steps a day. So instead of steps I chose stairs. A floor in my condo has 20 steps. So at first I avoided the elevator. Then added repetitions of squats and fitness exercises, then repetitions of Tai Chi leg strength exercises. At this point I’m at 192,725 stair steps or squats or kicks which is like climbing 10,359 floors since I started keeping track. If we don’t implement common sense gun control I’ll never catch up. I’ll have strong legs though 😀. Human lives shouldn’t be political. • • Fact: Americans are 25x more likely to kill each other with guns than any other countries. Yesterday I was invited to join @bradyunitedsf @stephencurry30 , Coach Kerr and four surviving families from the Uvalde, Texas shooting, a school shooting that tragically took the lives of 19 students and 2 teachers. The purpose of the event was to create change through education, fundraising and creating a culture alongside Athlete Leaders such as Steph and Coach Kerr that opens up real dialogue around what we need to do to improve gun safety measures. I sat with and learned first hand from the parents of Jackie Cazares, a bright 9 year old girl, who loved making TikTok videos, singing and had a dream of becoming a veterinarian. Jackie, unfortunately was one of the 19. Her story lives on thru her siblings and parents Javier and Gloria, who use their experience alongside Brady United to fight for change, so no other parents have to experience the same pain. Despite the growing number of mass shootings in our country, President BIden’s urgent pleas and the fact that most Americans believe we should ban the sale of military-style assault weapons, Congress has been unwilling to act. As Brady United points out, these are “weapons of war” that “have no place in civilian hands” as they are “uniquely lethal, designed to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. Their increased lethality is why they are the weapon of choice for America’s mass shooters.” Brady United points out that, “When a federal ban was in effect from 1994-2004, America saw a 37% decline in gun massacres and a 70% decline in assault weapons traced to crime…But after Congress let the ban expire in 2004, mass shooting deaths increased by 347%. We are saddened by the devastating tragedy that's happened at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas last Tuesday. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with the victims, their families and the Uvalde school community. This tragedy has affected so many. As a mother of 3 small children, it pains me to see the lives loss of so many innocent children and teachers. I cannot imagine the pain these families are going through. I am heartbroken and so angry by this senseless act of gun violence. In memory of the 19 children and 2 teachers, starting May 31, we will donate 50% of our proceeds earned on Tuesdays for the next 21 Tuesdays. Getting ready to remind students that this bucket of cobble stones is our defense /distraction if an active shooter is on campus. I used my IT bucket because this character feeds on fear and kills children. This should not be part of my day. Gun sales in the United States dropped dramatically in January following a pandemic-driven surge. According to Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, sales of firearms fell 42.6% last month but were still in line with pre-pandemic levels. SAAF says it can’t pinpoint why sales dropped so suddenly, but the industry has been expecting a slowdown. SAAF estimates put firearms sales at 19.9 million in 2021. It’s the second-busiest year for gun sales since the FBI began publishing background check data in the late 1990s. A record 22.8 million guns were sold back in 2020. The National Rifle Association, the gun industry's chief advocate, said Friday it was leaving New York for Texas and would seek bankruptcy protection. The NRA excoriated New York's government and justice system in a statement, saying the state has a "toxic political environment." Based in Fairfax, Virginia, the organization has operated as a New York-registered nonprofit since its founding in 1871. The group will explore moving part of its operations to Texas, the NRA said. The planned actions, including a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in Texas, come five months after New York state Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil suit that seeks to dissolve the association for and accused executives of using millions of NRA dollars for personal uses, including private-jet travel, trips to places including the Bahamas and pricey meals. The NRA countered with its own suit against the attorney general, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and others for allegedly attempting to "blacklist" the group. "The NRA's claimed financial status has finally met its moral status: bankrupt," James said in a statement Friday. "While we review this filing, we will not allow the NRA to use this or any other tactic to evade accountability and my office’s oversight." Shannon Watts, founder of gun-safety group Moms Demand Action, said in a statement, "The NRA can try to run from its years of deception, decadence, and self-dealing, but it can’t hide."
