Exercise Promotes Neurogenesis 🏃🏻♀️➡️🧠🐁 The results of research in mice has provided new insights into how exercise may help to prevent or slow cognitive decline during aging. The study showed that exercise has a significant impact on gene expression in microglia – immune cells that support brain function. Crossing the Blood-Brain Barrier in Mice 🩸🧠🐭 Researchers have engineered a gene delivery vehicle that uses a human protein to efficiently cross the blood-brain barrier and deliver a disease-relevant gene to the brain in mice expressing the human protein. As the SEAS Design and Project Fair showed, students bring all sorts of backgrounds and interests with them to the classroom, and find ways to build on them through the lens of engineering. Showcased projects included toy cars controlled by muscle flexion or electronic gloves, an autonomous plant waterer, a biofiltration system that removes heavy metal pollutants from water, and a skiing helmet modified to sense location and environmental factors such as temperature and ultraviolet radiation. “You look at the world a little bit differently once you realize how applicable something you build is,” said David Dias, who co-designed the skiing helmet. “It’s not just magic how this happens. It’s code. It’s components. Electrical engineering classes allow you to have the creative freedom to see how the rest of the world works.” The SEAS Design and Project Fair brought together independent research, class final projects and extracurricular student organizations to highlight the true range of the SEAS student body. “There are a lot of intellectual resources at SEAS, a lot of highly intellectual people, so there’s a really great cross-pollination of ideas,” said Cherish Jongwe, who designed the biofiltration system as a senior capstone project. “It keeps your mind thinking about what I can do to help society, with the infrastructure to actually do it.” #Harvard #SEAS #EngineeringScience #ElectricalEngineering #MechanicalEngineering #EnvironmentalEngineering #Bioengineering

Removing Lead From Water With Yeast 🍺🚱💧 Researchers have come up with a way to repurpose surplus yeast generated by beer breweries to absorb lead from contaminated water. Through biosorption, yeast can quickly absorb even trace amounts of lead and other heavy metals from water. Enhancing immunosuppression🧑🔬 Autoimmune diseases and other immune system disorders can be complex, long-term and difficult to treat. Allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) may provide a promising treatment option as they regulate normal immune cell function, can be isolated from adipose tissue and bone marrow, and are regenerative. However, clinical trials using MSCs have been disappointing to date, showing poor immunosuppression by MSCs in target tissues. Researchers designed chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-MSC) cells to help overcome the limitations of MSC therapies. By engineering MSCs with CARs (a synthetic receptor protein that redirects cells to targets), the team hypothesized that, compared to unmodified MSCs, they could design CAR-MSCs with improved ‘trafficking’ to target sites and strengthen immunosuppression. Once stable CAR expression on MSCs was achieved, the CAR-MSCs were used to treat graft-versus-host (GvHD) disease in mice. The team found significant benefits of modified MSCs over unmodified MSCs (lower GvHD clinical symptom scores and prolonged survival) and enhanced CAR-MSC trafficking to target tissues. These results support the feasibility of producing CAR-MSCs, with potential benefits in patients with immune-mediated diseases and improved therapeutic efficacy.
