My drawing "Infinite Horizon" is an expression of how a woman's potential is truly infinite and that she has to find and nurture that spark by looking both within and beyond, and persevere no matter what! Wanted to capture a certain contemplative and inward quality to the gaze even though she is looking into the horizon. With the looseness of the lines sought to convey the essence of the free spirit that she truly is if she chooses to be so! . For this commission my client wanted a painting of her kids captured in a natural way in an ocean setting. We decided on this particular reference for the painting as we wanted to capture the stance of the little boy looking at the ocean in a mix of both awe and a little apprehension seeing the vastness before him...and his sister calmly being there for him to hold her hand. . It was good challenge since as per the client's request, I used colours of the sea and sand very different from the original reference but using multiple ocean references from her own pictures. . Took part in an Art Exhibition for a cause this Saturday at the Total Environment Corporate Campus, Bangalore. " Where This Flower Blooms", was an art and creative fundraiser event for 3 different charities. School building in rural areas, reaching out to the less privileged in interior India, Addressing climate change and Slow fashion were some of the causes. . It was a fantasic day ..full of art, poetry, creativity, and heart organised by Artist Bharati Sagar and Architects and Founders of Total Environment Homes, Shibanee Sagar and Mr. Kamal Sagar. . It was inspiring and eye opening to hear Artist S.G Vasudev talk about the inception of Cholamandalam Artist's Village in the Chennai of the60's, then Madras! How along with Mr. KCS Paniker and few more artists they started the college without government help / funding to keep the autonomy of the artists going. . And later had the opportunity to discuss with him about the early Madras Art Movement days, artist JMS Mani, a close friend of his and a few more thoughts of his on some Indian and Italian artists. . Artist Bharati Sagar spoke about her influences behind the beautiful soft and fluid pastel & mixed media figurative works depicting women and children.. and her works with natural materials. . Mr Suresh Jayaram spoke about the very early history of Bangalore's Lalbagh, an ode to the iconic location, on which he has published a book on with many historic drawings & photographs. . Artist Dimple had a wonderful performance piece on the precarious balace between Man and Nature. . Met and made new art friends :) . Meeting and listening to the stories, seeing works of so many artists, creatives and founders was a humbling learning experience altogether.

The pandemic forced us to devise newer ways of sociality. This requires us to re-think about the forms of sociability and dissent. Internationally the disappearing public spaces are becoming a common phenomenon. Why are the public spaces today, no longer the democratic spaces of debate, interactions between communities but instead have become spaces of consumption, private commerce where we are under surveillance and control? Is there a possibility to be disenchanted by the capitalistic pursuit of happiness that can lead to a productive, generative state of being? The works are at display till 16 of March at Kanoria Center, Ahmedabad About the show: The past few years have been of ecological crises, political turmoil in countries across the world, cultural hegemonies and social constraints. The pandemic forced us to devise newer ways of sociality. This requires us to re-think about the forms of sociability and dissent. Internationally the disappearing public spaces are becoming a common phenomenon. Why are the public spaces today, no longer the democratic spaces of debate, interactions between communities but instead have become spaces of consumption, private commerce where we are under surveillance and control? Is there a possibility to be disenchanted by the capitalistic pursuit of happiness that can lead to a productive, generative state of being? Public Viewing: 9th to 16th March 2022, 4 pm to 7:30 pm at the Urmila Art Gallery & L&P Hutheesing Visual Art Centre. ~ Shakuntala Kulkarni (About the artist) Sharmila Samant is a visual artist from Bombay, India. She graduated in Sculpture from the Sir J.J. School of Arts in 1989 and a Diploma in Interior Design and Decoration at the L.S. Raheja College of Architecture, 1990, a fellowship at the Kanoria Center for Arts, Ahmedabad, 1992-93, then a Residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, in 1998- 2000 which was followed by a residency at the Gasworks, London, 2001. She is on the academic council of the G5A Foundation for contemporary culture, Mumbai which supports contemporary art and culture, good governance and sustainability since 2013. She is also on the advisory body of Arthshila, Patna based cultural initiative since 2017. Originally trained in mural painting, Kulkarni’s work continued in the vein of addressing large audiences, but shifted from flat surfaces into sculpture, performance, and new media. She joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at the MS University of Baroda in 1965 after graduating from Delhi University in History. Studying painting at Baroda under the mentorship of KG Subramanyan introduced her to the linguistics of varied art-making processes. Painting is completely a self-based activity. Whilst painting, I am sneaking deep into oblivion. It’s my dialogue with myself. Through films & theatre, I seek to reach out to an audience. It’s a centrifugal acceleration… my dialogue with the viewer. A painting exists for itself and in itself, and unlike films has no utilitarian existence. All through these mediums, I experimented with the ‘space’ whether it's 2 or 3 dimensional… explored its visual possibilities. Space and visuals are like a circle and a center of that circle… non-existent without each other. I guess I am inseparable from being an artist. Dube’s works have been included in the most important museum survey exhibition of contemporary art from India mounted in the past decade, including Indian summer at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (2005), India Moderna at the Institut d’Art Modern, Valencia, Spain (2008), to name a few. So this is it. All the paintings I created for Space118. They are a set of 6 acrylic on canvas paintings each sized 4x5 ft. I made them while exploring the feeling of trying to find a flow in between chaos and order. I hope you enjoyed the takeover this week. I am extremely grateful to Space118 for this grant. It’s given me the opportunity to explore new mediums, scale and collaborations with fellow artists. Meeting and learning from my peers in the grant virtually has been it’s own unique experience. It’s fascinating and refreshing to see art practices that are so vastly different. Still can’t believe that I was mentored by Jitish Kallat as part of the grant. Talking to him over the sessions was a humbling experience to say the least. It will take me a while to unpack everything I have learnt over the grant. I have found this as a massive opportunity to evolve my craft and I am excited as ever to continue creating new work that is relevant to our time and explorative in its making.
