Battersea Power Station is delighted to announce that the Grade II* listed building will be home to, ‘Field of Dreams’, a brand new art installation by British contemporary artist, Claire Luxton, in partnership with MTArt Agency, this spring. Join us for the 'Voicing Out Silences' exhibition and publication launch on the 15th of May at the National Gallery, Livingstone! This series of events is part of a collaboration between the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), the Livingstone Office for Contemporary Art (LoCA) and Casa MA in San José, Costa Rica. The partnership led to a dual home-based digital residency project where each institutional partner nominated two arts practitioners, who would be put in dialogue with a practitioner nominated by one of the other organisations. The home-based residency used the context of each resident as a starting point, understanding this as a geographical location, landscape, or environment that is already shaped by specific political and socio-economic frameworks. The first pairing was Maritea Dæhlin, a Norwegian interdisciplinary artist working and living between Norway and Mexico, and Costa Rican artist Marton Robinson. Julianny Ariza Vólquez from the Dominican Republic and Bwanga ‘Benny Blow’ Kapumpa from Zambia formed the second pairing. In the third pairing of the conversation, artist and researcher Gladys Kalichini from Zambia engaged with Grace Tabea Tenga based in Norway. This collaborative home-based digital residency project will culminate in ‘Voicing Out Silences’; an exhibition, publication launch, performances and artist talks as part of a programme open to the public. Picture yourself in a hotel room. What do you see, and more importantly, what do you feel? For New York-based artist Alex Yudzon, these seemingly mundane spaces have become the canvas for creative transformation since 2014. In his project “A Room for the Night,” he disrupts and rearranges hotel furniture, challenging our perception of the ordinary through unique photographic installations. @alexyudzon @radius.books Yudzon’s work explores the complex relationship between American society and its hotels. He says, “Part of what I aim to achieve with my work is to reawaken our sense of wonder, to create environments that force the viewer to see the mundane in a new light.” His installations, documented and then dismantled, leave only the photograph as evidence of what transpired. Inspired by crime scene photography, Yudzon’s art creates a sense of voyeuristic thrill, making the viewer both a spectator and an accomplice. His journey began by rearranging hotel room furniture while traveling, evolving into a unique artistic practice. A few peeks at the rooms I had the pleasure of designing for Miss @dunemoss ‘s amazing release show! It was really such a pleasure to make magic with another fae creature, and I was beyond honored to be included in such an important project. These rooms challenged me. Asked me to look at my dark parts, the parts of me that feel insecure, not enough, that doubt constantly and say “you’re not good enough”. I got to dive back in with my art in a way that hasn’t quite happened yet, and I was so happy to be part of this amazing creation. Why do we as humans act and see things in specific ways and can we free ourselves of the rules we impose on us? Through videos and installations, I tell tales that mutate between being real and fictitious – A person that is paralyzed in its own enclosure or borders of clouds that crash upon each other. I am intrigued by how we as humans try to control, frame and organize everything. Every space has its own presence and potential and we treat this in different ways. Where lies the fragile line between nature and artificiality? When and where do we let nature run loose, chaos over order? Through their surrounding worlds, I want to question the states that objects, spaces, or beings can transform between.
