This illustration and many more in: FroehlichArtStudio Elmore James (né Brooks; January 27, 1918 – May 24, 1963) was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Noted for his use of loud amplification and his stirring voice, James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. His slide guitar technique earned him the nickname "King of the Slide Guitar". Elmore James was born Elmore Brooks in Richland, Holmes County, Mississippi, the son of 15-year-old Leola Brooks, a field hand. His father was probably Joe Willie "Frost" James, who moved in with Leola, and Elmore took his surname. He began making music at the age of 12, using a simple one-string instrument (diddley bow, or jitterbug) strung on a shack wall. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues that he developed in Detroit. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s–1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie. Hooker was ranked 35 in Rolling Stone's 2015 list of 100 greatest guitarists. ----------- John Lee Hooker (Clarksdale, Misisipi; 22 de agosto de 1912-Los Altos, California; 21 de junio de 2001) fue un cantante y guitarrista de blues estadounidense. As my other find from last weekend, I will be showing a very good record I got at the local record store. This record has been at the store for a while now, and I brought in some stuff to trade in for a price reduction. As a result, I was able to get this original copy of Bo Diddley's debut album for only about $40. That doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but this album usually goes for over $100 in the condition that it's in. Post 1,053: Sonny Boy Williamson (2023) American Gods: a phrase that is now strongly associated with Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel with that title and, to Americans, the TV series which it spawned. However, circa 1963/64 it was a handy way of thinking about a quartet of American artists who, over a very short time period came to define electric blues for us Brits. In large part that was due to sterling work by Pye Records (aided and strongly abetted by Guy Stevens) in making copies of relevant records from those artists available to a UK audience though that recognition process was undoubtedly accelerated by those good people who arranged for said artists to appear in the UK and Europe in a timely manner. So who were the “said artists”? The ones I’m grouping in this manner are the Chess/Checker foursome: Muddy, The Wolf, Sonny Boy and Little Walter. I was lucky enough to get to see the first three of these gents in a London club setting which implied a closeness (and ambiance) which wasn’t available in a concert format. They didn’t disappoint. Were they necessarily better than other blues artists who’d migrated north like Reed, Hooker, Rush, James and Guy? We are remembering American blues legend Muddy Waters on his birthday today. McKinley Morganfield, known professionally as Muddy Waters, was born on April 4 in 1913. He was an American blues singer and musician who was an important figure in the post-war blues scene, and is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues". In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band recorded several blues classics, 'Hoochie Coochie Man', 'I'm Ready' and 'I Just Want to Make Love to You'. The Rolling Stones named themselves after his 1950 song 'Rollin' Stone', his music influenced Eric Clapton's career, Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love', is lyrically based on the Muddy Waters hit 'You Need Love'. We are remembering him by listening to our release from 2020 'Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live': a live album recorded during the tour to support his album 'Hard Again'. Seeing Muddy Waters live in London was to be a defining moment in Paul Rodgers' life that ultimately lead to his tribute album 'Tribute to Muddy Waters'. Post 1,034: Andre Williams (2022) I can’t remember when I picked up the Sir Douglas Quintet’s version of Bacon Fat but it was in the HMV store just east of Oxford Circus, so that narrows it down to when I was working in Centre Point. It was on a Best-of compilation CD of Sir Doug & the boys from the early days on Huey Meaux’s Tribe label. When I got home, I do recall being singularly unimpressed by the track almost to the extent of feeling that it lowered the quality of the overall set. However, that track grew on me slowly but certainly surely. This was pre-serious internet days so I couldn’t dig into the original, that’s if there was such a thing (and I hadn’t a clue). Eventually I did find that original. It was credited to ‘Andre Williams And His New Group’ and it appeared on the Fortune label. A blast of the record from that lazy sax onwards epitomized the down and dirty approach of Fortune. You could throw a few other adjectives in there too, like greasy, raw and sleazy and they wouldn’t be inappropriate. This is the slab of vinyl that’s caused some people to refer to Williams as a legend; nothing else from him, before or after came anywhere close. He definitely does things on the harmonica I have t heard, including a cool “wah-wah pedal”- like thing in a few places. Post 952: Rufus Thomas (2021) By solo record number two for Stax, Rufus Thomas was back with the cats and dogs again. Or to be more precise, dog singular, as in The Dog, which number put the concept of ‘dance’ together with Rufus on the same record for the first time: a coming together which would be near omnipresent for the rest of his career. Only this didn’t happen in the UK. In an unusual degree of tardiness – for them – London Records didn’t latch on to the Thomas phenomenon until the follow-up - featuring Rufus walking that same dog - saw release in the US. The first I heard the number would have been from Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds in the Flamingo circa early ’64. It was one of his favourite cover jobs judging by the frequency of its appearance in the live set and I’m surprised that he didn’t put it on record. What the Thunderbirds didn’t have though when I saw them – and there were several changes within the band – was a bank of sax players, and it was the assembled Memphis Horns with that down-and-dirty riff that could even have come from New Orleans, that took the Thomas record from OK to great. For todays post, here's a good find that I had about a year and a half back. I'm not much of a 78 collector, as I have not been able to find any decent ones in my area. However, this flea market I've been going to recently is just a gift that keeps on giving. I went in there and it looked like it was going to be a wash. However, I saw a guy who had a big box of 45s that I could look through. My dad, however, noticed a stack of 78s that I didn't see right in front of the box of 45s. On the very top of the stack was the Jimmy McCracklin record on Checker.
