Within the Niyamas, one of the 8 limbs of yoga, we have Tapas. Tapas is all about a fiery resolve or discipline to work often against the grain to move forward in our lives. To sit with discomfort where it means bringing about a change that is for the greater good. It is through a regular & committed practice on the mat that we are able to direct our energy and build the heat needed to more forward become stronger and more grounded. Tapas teaches us to avoid temporary fixes in life, no matter how tempting they are and to instead work hard towards achieving a longer term goal. A dedication to move away from damaging habits & behaviours that stop us moving forward in our lives. It may mean being firm with ourselves when it comes to ensuring that our self-talk is consistently kind. Moving away from harmful choices and respecting ourselves and our lives more so that we can make nourishing choices that heal us and make us happy and strong. Devotion to a self-care routine that sets us on the path to health and healing. Long holds in challenging poses like lizard, plank, pigeon & warriors allow us to experience heat and observe the mental chatter which habitually tells us to abandon discomfort. By staying, coming back the breath and surrendering to the intensity, we can literally begin the process of rewiring the neural pathways of our brain and training our stress response - impacting how we cope with life off the mat. Chaturanga is THE pose that everyone wants to know how to do, but is unfortunately it’s the pose that is often overlooked in so many classes. But I can help you! 🙌🏼🩷✨ I injured myself badly back in 2017 from practicing this pose too much and incorrectly which is why I frequently teach drills like this. I think that Strength Drills like this are the behind the scenes to all the transitions and poses in yoga. Chaturanga aka tricep push up is a powerhouse pose. It integrates FULL body strength and is a complete workout in itself. 💪🏼 Here’s 3 drills I swear by that helped me build the strength to progress in this exercise. 👉🏼 Practice them 2 x week but PLEASE take full rest days. 🇬🇧 I spontaneously wrote a little poem in answer to a question “When is the best time to practice yoga ?” In his book "Light on Yoga," B.K.S. Iyengar advises doing yoga early in the morning or late in the evening, noting that there are advantages to each. "Practice in the morning makes one work better at one's vocation. In the evening it removes the fatigue of the day's strain and makes one fresh and calm," he said. This is true however I feel that there are benefits in practicing all the time and in all circumstances. The only time I would avoid practicing asanas is just after a big meal. Doing asanas on a full stomach is not ideal but apart from that try to practice every day even for a few minutes…. 🇫🇷 J’ai écris un petit poème spontanément en réponse à la question “Quel est le meilleur moment pour pratiquer le yoga?” Dans son livre « Light on Yoga », B.K.S. Today is Fibromyalgia Awareness day. Fibromyalgia is a widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. It’s a spectrum disorder that varies from person to person and is characteristically an “invisible illness”. I was diagnosed with the disorder in 2021 after a 10 year battle with my symptoms and doctors, physios and other healthcare professionals telling me I was exaggerating my symptoms. Swipe across to hear my journey - taken from my highlights FMS WARRIOR ⬆️ I know this isn’t my usual content and I don’t really share my condition on here, but I wanted to reach out to fellow warriors today to tell you that I know how invisible and lonely this journey can feel and I see you. Adjusting to my diagnosis has been bumpy at times especially as I try to “do it all” and that’s the biggest trigger to a flare up. It’s the most humbling thing in the world to have a condition that can at times limit everyday activities like walking and remembering things it’s why I have the approach I do towards life, health, fitness, and my yoga. Having Fibromyalgia is why my yoga today looks different to the yoga I was taught. It’s why I had to step back and reduce the classes I was teaching. It’s why I focus on strength, stability and functional movement. It’s why I’m so grateful for having this diverse practice in my life. Getting the diagnosis didn’t radically change anything for me. My day to day life is still the same but it validated 10 years of searching for answers. It’s also a hip opener because to stay in the extended child’s pose for longer period of time you will feel it in the hips. Forehead stays in the ground the whole time. If that’s not possible or too much pressure on the forehead use a blanket or the blocks under the chest and support your forehead with the blanket as well. Go slow and enjoy being in your own world. That’s why I love extended child’s pose. I get to go within and block out the world around me. About last night.. We have a couple of spots if you’d like to join us for our Tuesday night 6.15-7.30pm yoga class @harrowartscentre. We have a lovely group of friendly, sweet souls. Many have been practising with me for years but we have some newbies too. The yoga can be quite strong but it’s definitely suitable for beginners due to the way that I teach. กินยาผิดชีวิตเปลี่ยน เสาร์ที่ผ่านมาสอน 5ชม.ติดรัวๆอยู่ในห้องแอร์เย็นฉ่ำ เดินออกมาเข้าห้องน้ำก็ร้อนดั่งไฟเผา เริ่มรู้ตัวว่าป่วยแน่และเรา บ่ายๆแวะกลับมาพัก เย็นออกไปสอนต่อน้ำมูกเริ่มมา เริ่มกินยาแก้ไอ พารา ฟ้าทะลายโจรก็ไม่ได้ผล อาทิตย์ จันทร์ก็ยังอัดยาก็ยังน้ำมูกไหลเหมือนเดิม เมื่อวานเย็นสอนเสร็จกลับมานึกได้ว่าอาการน้ำมูกไหลจนแสบจมูกนั้นเหมือนตอนภูมิแพ้กำเริบเลยเรา อัดยาแก้แพ้ไป 2 เม็ดนอนตั้งแต่ 2ทุ่มครึ่ง ตื่นมาเช้านี้...อ้าวน้ำมูกหาย แรงมา ปูเสื่อโยคะไป 1.30ชม. ตอนนี้รู้สึกร่างกายกลับมาเป็นปกติและ แต่ขอพักอีกหน่อยวันนี้ขอไม่โหมงานและ 😁😁 #อากาศเปลี่ยนแปลงบ่อย #yogamakesyoustrong

What I wish I could tell the woman coming into class after me at my local studio: She looked and sounded discouraged, telling one of the teachers , "I'm going to have to stop eating". Of course, the teacher said, "no, no, no, that's not healthy! " I'm sure she offered some other encouragement, but I moved away trying not to eavesdrop, though I wanted to jump in in the convo. What I wanted to say: Its time to fall in love with yourself. It's time to make appointments to move your body this week, not because you are mad at your body, but because it feels good to move. Keep doing this over and over again. Find a place or places to move where you are encouraged, can become part of a community. Your body will start to feel different. As far as eating goes, your stronger, happier, beloved body needs fuel. Keep eating! Choose lots of fruits and vegetables. Don't count calories, just eat less processed food, less fried food, less dairy, and less red meat. Schedule your appointments to move your beautiful body during times you normally stress eat. Look forward to moving like it is a treat, and it will become one. Love your own beautiful body. I saw you. You are worthy of love. One last thing-a bit of imposter syndrome here on my part. I have some muscles, I feel strong. I will never be "skinny". I will always be pear shaped. I have learned to love myself anyway.
