People often miss on great opportunities to build strong legs, more mobile hips, and stronger core because they don’t see all that good functional training has to offer. @svanmarrewyk helps us show how we use functional training concepts from our DVRT (Dynamic Variable Resistance Training) system to get MORE out of exercises people might THINK they know! A crossover deadlift with row provides so many benefits in one movement. Moving through a less stable position of the frontal plane works so many of the leg muscles not just produce force to lift the weight, but to stabilize as well. This type of movement really hits the glutes BETTER than most other glute exercises because the glutes are triplanar muscles and this is how we can train all the planes of motion for the glutes at once. There is TONS of core training in both maintaining the “plank” of the deadlift and row but also resist rotational forces that are trying to throw the trunk off balance. Holding and pulling apart the neutral grip handles allows us to tie in the lats more which connects to the core and glutes through the posterior oblique sling that helps stabilize the trunk and pelvis. While the row not only builds a challenge in the upper back, but the core in reflexive stability as well. The shoulder squat is A LOT more than just putting a weight on your shoulder and squatting. Placing the Ultimate Sandbag upon the shoulder immediately requires us to resist lateral movement and places much more work on the core and the hips to not let the body shift and rotate. Think of a moving side plank as you squats, not only are you working on building stronger legs, but a more stable trunk and pelvis. Going with a power snatch and reverse lunge requires dynamic stability of the core as we move into the unstable position of lunging. Bracing the core properly can also open up mobility of the hips and the shoulders to allow for better movement. The lateral slide squat with arc press out teaches how to use the core to create the stability to allow more mobility in the lateral movement so that we can build stronger legs and glutes. Frontal plane strength training doesn’t get nearly the recognition is deserves in most fitness and performance programs. They often think a side plank is all there is really, or maybe it is because people are all so consumed with trying to work individual muscles they forget there is a difference between working a muscle in isolation and how those muscles work in more integrated movement. For example, many people will recommend working the hip muscles to help knee issues especially in runners. Since the hip helps control the movement of the knee that may make sense at first glance, but then they do all these isolated hip exercises. A 2012 paper in the International Journal Of Physical Therapy points out that this just work in actually solving the issue. “Frontal plane running mechanics may contribute to the etiology or exacerbation of common running related injuries. Hip strengthening alone may not change frontal plane hip and knee joint running mechanics….The purpose of the current study was to evaluate whether a movement training program using visual feedback and weekly instruction and manual facilitation of lower extremity alignment affects hip and knee joint frontal plane running mechanics among females with evidence of altered weight bearing kinematics. At the end of this 4‐week training program, participants displayed decreased internal hip and knee abduction joint moments, decreased knee abduction excursion, and increased knee adduction excursion during stance while running.” What @dvrtjp helps us show is how we can use frontal plane strength training various ways to both build greater strength and increase our injury resilience. We can move through the frontal plane like in a lateral deadlift and we can RESIST the frontal plane that builds stability that is very practical the lateral chain of the body. We can teach how to resist the frontal plane by our body position or where we position the load or even both! These are just different ways to train, they are better ways to build a body that can perform and reduce injuries.

Glutes and Hammies workout felt good. Unfortunately I lost my therapist so the gym will have to be the only therapy for now. It’s only been two weeks and boy am I feeling it already. I’m sure most people don’t read this, but with this, this is going to get really sad or really interesting. Finding a new therapist after almost two years is worse than finding a new love or friend. Do I have the strength to start all over, quite frankly it sounds exhausting and overwhelming to have to get that connection. Re-start the novela of my life from season 1, relive it all, be able to open up to someone new sounds quite impossible even though I’m told I should try, most of the time seems pointless. I wish I could just smile my way through life as I do on social media. I wish my feelings wouldn’t feel so deep, is this even normal . What is normal? At least the good thing is that as deep as I feel pain, I feel joy just as deep. When is dark and light comes, you appreciate that light so much more and your smile is so much brighter. I won’t deny being a little vain too, and too much crying makes my eyes and face puffy. So on to try to get more mindful and purposeful with my workouts, wether is a distraction, a therapy, a shield or just the belief that a healthy body helps a mind to be healthy and viceversa. I like to work in super sets! of course, when you get older strength training is an excellent method for combatting age related challenges! Like a decline in muscle mass & function, reduce bone density! Poor balance, obesity, etc. if you want to keep your independence, and maintain a higher quality of life! Keep moving, keep eating healthy, and take the recovery days that you need! you deserve to be active and enjoy everything around you! Hip thrust: people don’t seem to understand that the most important part of the hip thrust is the thrust and the contraction at the top. It’s not about how low you dip your hips. The most important part is to really squeeze those glutes at the top and if you can’t, that means you have too much weight lower the weight and do the exercise properly. Hip thrust with band: with this exercise, I continuously push my knees outwards in an AB production through every rep so really really keep those knees out. You will feel it much more in your glutes. Personally, I do all my squats and deadlifts with a dumbbell just because of the injuries that I have.
