Question - Should neurodivergent people should be screened for hypermobility, and vice versa? 🤔 Neurodiversity is the non-medical term used to describe differences in brain function, such as Autism, ADHD, and many more. It’s an affirming way to describe these conditions, acknowledging: brains function differently, there is no one “right” type of brain, and still understanding that these conditions are also a disability in our current world. Here are just a couple of examples of recent research showing the links: 🦓 One study found 51% of neurodivergent people were hypermobile, while only 17.5% of the neurotypicals were hypermobile. (Csecs, et al., 2022, Frontiers in Psychiatry) 🦓 Another found people with ADHD had a 4.7x the odds of being hypermobile. (Glans, et al., 2021, Journal of Psychiatric Research) Clearly there is a strong link! Neither of these types of conditions can be “cured” and they don’t need to be. Awareness is very important to understand ourselves and each other, and to care for our bodies and brains. Are you hypermobile and/or neurodivergent? If you have a diagnosis of one and haven’t considered the other, you may wish to consider it. It could be useful to: understand yourself, connect to people with similar experiences, and learn how to take care of your health. Are you a health care provider? Hypermobile and neurodivergent people are not rare. It’s important we are all on the lookout, to provide best possible care. Have all relevant diagnoses been considered? Sharing some of my favorite @rubberbanditz conditioning exercises with you today. 1️⃣ Pole pull ups- Thicker band = more assist or spot. 2️⃣ One arm row- Start light and work up. 3️⃣ SLD- Keep the band taught like you’re squeezing a grapefruit under your arm and press your hips back. 4️⃣ Needle stretch- Start light, as a thicker band may pull your leg past your normal ROM. 💥 The size band that you use depends on two things: your bodyweight and your strength. The Effect of Hormones on Hypermobile Individuals 🦓 In hypermobile individuals, it is believed the predominant androgen hormones have very little negative effect on collagen, with these hormones likely contributing to muscle bulking around the joints instead which is an ideal response. With other hormones though, it is quite a different story. Whilst oestrogen tends to stabilise collagen levels, progestogens appear to ‘destabilise or loosen them’. Many hypermobile people, though not all, notice a worsening in symptoms including increased joint pain, clumsiness or a greater tendency to dislocate in the five days leading up to menstruation and in the few days after menstruation. This is exactly the time when the progesterone compounds far exceed the stabilising oestrogen compounds and is particularly prevalent in collagen-based HSD/EDS. Those individuals whose joints become worse at the time of menstruation often note that if their periods become irregular, for whatever reason, their joint symptoms not only become worse but, are worse for longer. This may be because in these people progesterone is present in high concentrations at times when it would not normally be present.
