Thunder Over Michigan 2023 on film #FilmFriday - Been a hot second since I’ve posted anything film. Last year I took some Porta 200 that had sat in my car for a little to long in the Florida heat with me to Michigan. Each shot feels unique to me having spent just a little more time to make sure each frame was just right. So I figured I’d write a little description for each shot. 1 & 5. Flogger One resting on the tarmac in the early morning sun before her last full performance later in the afternoon. I’ve kind of avoided going in depth about how eery it is for me to see these frames and think at the time, I had no clue what would happen just over 24 hours later. It was a real treat to see this MiG-23 in flight, and I feel very lucky to have had to chance to see her up close. 2. A Corsair getting some pre flight work taken care of. I always love capturing the people that make these old birds fly, doing what they love to do. 3. Peeking through the bomb bay of a B-25, looking up the the left waist gunners seat. Probably my favorite ww2 bomber, I’d love to take a fight from this spot some day. 4. B-17 “Yankee Lady” running her engines up before taxiing out for a flight. Something about a bare skin Fortress that just can’t be beat. 6. C-47 “Beach City Baby” in the sunlight. As weird as it might sound to be so excited over a C-47, but I had been following @vintagewingsinc work to restore her back to being flight worthy over the last several years. Le dessin représente le second incident du golfe de Syrte,(au passage c’est cet incident qui inspirera le premier film Top Gun). Le 4 janvier 1989 dans la matinée quand deux F-14 Tomcat américains abattent deux MiG-23 de l'armée de l'air libyenne. Un premier incident similaire avait eu lieu en 1981. Les deux autres dessins sont au crayon uniquement. Le dernier est à l'encre de chine. Here we are folks, happy Phantom Phriday! Oh wait, that’s not right. Oh yeah, it’s FLOGGER FRIDAY! I’m super excited to finally share a project I’ve been working on with @planebricks for the last two months, the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23MLA in the service of the Luftstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee. I’ve always been fascinated with the MiG’s of East Germany. I’ve always had a fascination with the MiG-23, how it has so much resemblance to the phantom while also having shapes so alien to western designs. I had to combine the two for this fantastic model. Jonah did an amazing job capturing the shape of the jet with all the right features, including the variable-geometry wings, the folding ventral stabilizer, and of course the funky landing gear. I can’t speak highly enough about this design. The Soviet-built MiG-23 “Flogger”, seen here at the Museo del Aire in Madrid, was designed to replace the widely-used MiG-21. The MiG-23’s advanced radar and fire control system could fire missiles at targets beyond visual range. Variable swing-wing geometry and robust landing gear allowed the MiG-23 to operate from short, remote runways. Early production aircraft suffered fuselage cracks during their service career, along with criticism of maneuverability. A considerable redesign of the airframe was performed, resulting in the MiG-23ML. Production started in 1970 with over 5,000 aircraft built. Today the MiG-23 remains in limited service with some export customers. This example began its service with the East German air force (Luftstreitkräfte), then with the Luftwaffe before retirement and final resting place here in 1994.
