This roughly corresponds to a third of the rubble of bombed-out Berlin houses and around 15,000 buildings. May 6, 1949-75 years ago-after over 300 days of the Soviet Union blockading Berlin, and thousands of dollars spent on airlifts of supplies and food from the US, Britain, and France, an agreement is finally reached to lift the blockade within a week. An embargo of the entire Eastern Europe collapsed the economy of particularly East Germany, and forced the Soviets to capitulate. Over 100 casualties had been reported due to flight and non-flight accidents over the course of the blockade, including 40 Britons and 31 Americans. USAF pilot M.A. Chin, 314th TCG with nose art of a C-119 bearing his surname- Ashiya, Japan, 1951: “Chin-Pai-Nai” is believed to have been a misspelling of the Japanese phrase “Shinpai Nai”, loosely meaning “no worries”. Supposedly, an airman of the 314th in Japan during the Korean War heard this and attempted to claim it by painting it on one of his unit’s Flying Boxcars. Fino al 1937, quando iniziarono i lavori per costruire una cittadella universitaria, il Teufelsberg non esisteva. Il primo ed ultimo edificio ad essere eretto fu la “Facoltà di Tecniche della Difesa”. Con la seconda guerra mondiale, alcune parti della carcassa tecnologica di difesa furono distrutte. I camion iniziarono a portare qui le macerie del resto della città devastata che presto si ammassarono fino a diventare il punto più alto di Berlino Ovest, significativamente ribattezzato “collina del diavolo” (teufelsberg). Negli anni ‘60 e ‘70 si piantarono alberi e fu costruita una pista da sci completa di skilift, ma i berlinesi non erano gli unici ad utilizzare il Teufelsberg: nel 1961 le forze occidentali trovarono infatti nella collina il luogo ideale dove installare un’imponente stazione per intercettare le comunicazioni dei paesi sotto il Patto di Varsavia. Dal 1961 alla fine della Guerra Fredda l’imponente centrale di spionaggio “Field Station Berlin” è stata in attività. Dopo la caduta del muro, il complesso è stato poi utilizzato per il controllo del traffico aereo fino al 1999, quando il Senato di Berlino ha deciso di venderlo. A questo punto inizia la parabola incerta della riqualificazione: fra i diversi progetti, mai andati in porto, c’era quello del regista David Lynch di costruire all’interno delle cupole-radar la sede dell’Università della Pace con corsi di meditazione. This is a relatively well-known image among Honduran Air Force aviation followers. Taken on April 12, 1985, at HCM Airbase in La Ceiba. Gen. Lopez was conducting a visit to all four airbases to assess their readiness. My father is standing to the General's right, fresh off a chase flight, still with his G-suit on after Mjr. Perdomo's (to the left of Gen. Lopez) first solo in an SMB2. By this point, only my father, Cnel. Sosa, and Cnel. Torres were the only qualified SMB2 instructors and were mostly responsible for every new SMB2 pilot that was formed during the 1980s. Was ich bisher so noch nicht allzu oft gesehen habe, sind diese handgemachten Fliesentapeten. Offensichtlich wurden sie mit Ölfarben im Batikverfahren hergestellt. Ein wunderschöner selbstgeschweisster Kleiderbügel. Das Highlight der Tour: auf den ersten Blick: ein Fenster mit Gardine. ...auf den zweiten Blick: das Fenster wurde von innen zugemauert, von aussen schwarz angemalt und dann wieder eingesetzt. Nu finns G3 inte alls i samma antal som AK-47. Men ändock en mycket trevlig bössa. Secret, Soviet Union, Cold War Radar Station! In 1971 the Soviet Union set up a top secret Radar Center here. Housing, a concert/sports hall, a school and shop were set up for the military families working at the base. The town and radar were never mentioned on maps, and a special military badge was required to access the neighbourhood. After the fall of the USSR, it fell into Russian hands and was abandoned entirely 2 years later in 1993. The Blackburn Buccaneer played a key role in the First Gulf War (1990-91). Originally bought for the Royal Navy in the 1960s to fly from its carriers as a solution to the Soviet ‘Sverdlov’ class of light cruisers (it would conduct fast, low level attack runs against the enemy cruisers, exploiting their radar horizon), the Buccaneer proved its abilities as a land-based ground attack aircraft too. It was a tough aeroplane, ideal for penetrating Iraqi defences at low level and dropping guided bombs onto enemy runways, limiting their ability to get their own fighters airborne. It also conducted ‘laser designating’ duties for the newer Tornados which, though able to drop laser-guided bombs, did not yet have laser-designating pods needed to guide them. (One Buccaneer would fly alongside every two Tornados, ‘painting’ the target with a laser pod, after which the Tornados would release their bombs). They had developed this tactic in West Germany in the 1980s to target key bridges if the Cold War had heated up.
