Private Purchase fatigues set in Poplin from Col Robert W Duke who was the head of the 1st Logistics Command from 3/1965 to 3/1966. It has size stamp on the collar. The size of the pockets are much bigger than thé 2nd pattern fatigue. Col Duke was sent to Vietnam to setup the infrastructure for massive american troops arrival. Even being a high ranking Officer but in charge of rear duty, he was not issued the jungle fatigues. As per usage, high ranking Officer had their jacket embrodered with name and tanks. Being 6’5, with a 45 inch chest can sometimes be a detriment when searching for vintage clothing. These iconic WW11 Army Combat Helmet headgear pieces played a crucial role during World War II. I think this is a mark 111 known as the Turtle Helmet due to its vague resemblance to a turtle shell. It provided better protection to the sides of the head compared to its predecessor the Brodie Helmet. This Helmet has its original camouflage netting and also the inner padding with the wooden fixings which are are all intact and original. A fantastic example of the classic Middle parka, complete with an original hood. Developed in the 1950s, the Middle parka is the British counterpart to the US Army's M51 and M65 fishtail parkas and saw an approximate service life of 20 years, throughout the Korean War and The Troubles in Ireland. This example was manufactured under MoD contract by H.Lotery & Co. Made from cotton sateen with a thick synthetic fur lining. The main front closure is secured with a 'bottle green' AZF-brand zip. The matching hood was made by James Smith & Co. and includes a drawstring with wooden ball stoppers for easy handling with gloves and the internal wire remains intact. A really lovely USAF offering, this M-1947 parka is made from a 100% cotton wind-resistant poplin and features a concealed Conmar brand zip, two large lower pockets, and two upper-hand warming pockets. There are belt loops that accommodate a standard-issue trouser belt. Originally worn by US Air Force ground personnel during the Korean War period. A perfect layering piece with an excellent rugged aesthetic. This example is lightly distressed, in very good condition with signs of real wear and tonnes of character. Jungle Jacket from SP5 John " Doc" Helbing from the A cie, third Platoon, 4/503rd Bat, 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served in Vietnam from 7/1969 -7/1970. Unfortnately John passed away in May 8th 2022. In 2019, I managed to contact him with the email hé left on the Vietnam Wall website. You can sée how he got this shirt from the Airforce dump and reused it. Helbing attend the Oklahoma Military Academy from 1966-1967. He participated in drill team, color guard, wrestling and was the first sergeant of A company. After completing his freshman year at OMA, Helbing transferred to the University of Wisconsin. The 1968 draft interrupted his studies. He served in the Army for three years and then returned to the University of Wisconsin to graduate with honors in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health. During his three years of military service, Helbing served with the 173rd ABN and the 82nd Airborne achieving the rank of Specialist 5th Class. He was a platoon combat medic and then promoted to a company senior medic. For his service he received the Combat Medical badge, the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medial with Device, the Parachute Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Marksman Rifle. Helbing was honorably discharged from the Army in 1971 and joined the Wisconsin National Guard. Unlike typical jackets with “Boeing test pilot” stencils, this version stands out for its rarity and collector’s value. It holds historical significance as a piece worn by actual test pilots. The original ribbing was damaged over time, but it has been restored using a hand-mending technique optimized for knitted structures. Except for some loss of the alpaca fur lining, including the collar, it’s in good condition compared to its age. With a shorter length and relaxed fit compared to later models, it boasts an appealing and distinctive outfit pattern. 1950’s Korean War Era USAF HBT with 13 star buttons. Laundry stamps along button placket, oxidized 13 star buttons, nice larger size. Same cut as US Army M-47 shirt. Air Force patches though.
