Infantryman Essentials 101: The P68 lightweight rucksack was used throughout the Vietnam War from 1968 onward and served as the primary pack of most US Army infantrymen. Made entirely from a very lightweight, but durable nylon material with a rivetted hollow tubular aluminium frame, the LW ruck was a massive improvement upon the earlier cotton canvas packs that were issued to US troops during Korea and WW2. The frame supports an optional backboard and cargo shelf for attaching other equipment such as a PRC-25 or PRC-77 radio. Particularly on longer patrols and missions, rucks would often be completely laden with all manner of additional equipment items such as canteens, radio equipment, entrenching tools, LAW Rocket Launchers, extra ammunition, sleeping gear... Just about every spare inch of external space and any conceivable attachment point would be covered with extra kit. Packs would often exceed a back-breaking 50kgs which would be worn day and night. An absolutely spectacular M-1956 webbing set for the advanced Vietnam collector. All components are in mint condition and are exactly as they would have been issued to troops over 60 years ago. The 1st pattern cotton trim canteen pouch is the highlight for me - the stitching on these early covers really pops and just doesn't compare to the later models. Another real rarity is the M-1956 combination pick/shovel entrenching tool which simply don't show up anymore. While it has some relatively minor storage wear, to find one of these, new, old stock is simply unheard of. An excellent example of a 1st pattern Tropical Combat Coat with wartime Special Forces insignia. A 1st pattern jacket can be identified by its exposed buttons, epaulettes, waist adjustment tabs on the rear, and gas flap under the main closure. This coat displays originally applied full-colour insignia and is attributed to a Master Sergeant of the 5th Special Forces Group. All patches are US-made with a cut edge. The numerous laundering numbers around the contract and instructions labels are an indication of months of wear. The original owner likely served early-war as an advisor to ARVN troops. Another fantastic Ranger patched coat, this time a 6-Color Desert DBDU. This SSgt. likely participated in Operation Gothic Serpent, the US intervention in the Somalian Civil War ca. 1993. Elements of Company B, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Rgt were deployed to Somalia in August 1993 under the code-name 'Task Force Ranger'. Tasked with capturing Somalian General Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The operation ultimately led to what is now known as the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu which set the premise for the Black Hawk Down movie. The coat displays a 3rd Ranger Bn scroll patch, accompanied by a Ranger qualification tab on the left shoulder. The US flag on the right shoulder is an indication that the uniform was worn overseas. While most Rangers deployed to Somalia wore the recently introduced 3-Color Desert Combat Uniform (DCU), 'Choc-Chip' was still sporadically worn. A seriously rare beast. OG-107 HWUs are getting increasingly difficult to find, let alone one fully patched to a Ranger. These uniforms were sporadically worn for a short period in the late 1970s-1980s by members of the newly formed 'Rapid Deployment Force' (RDF). Comprised of units from the 9th Infantry, 82nd Airborne & 101st Airborne Divisions, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the 1st Marine Division. Active between 1978-1983 when it was reorganised as the United States Central Command. The Hot Weather Uniform (HWU) served as a stopgap between the Vietnam-era Tropical Combat Uniform (TCU) and the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU). Features from the TCU were carried over such as the pleated pockets and ripstop poplin construction with only a few alterations such as straightened pockets. I always enjoy niche pieces like this that visually represent the developmental history of Military uniforms. Only a handful of period photos (including slides 4 & 5) of the HWU are known to exist by myself and other researchers which is a testament to its limited procurement and scarcity. Developed in the 1950s, the Middle parka is the British counterpart to the US Army's M51 and M65 fishtail parkas and saw an approximate service life of 20 years, throughout the Korean War and The Troubles in Ireland. This example was manufactured under MoD contract by H.Lotery & Co. Made from cotton sateen with a thick synthetic fur lining. The main front closure is secured with a 'bottle green' AZF-brand zip. An original, totally custom-made 'Graf' Jacket made in Germany circa. 1970s for a member of the 2/68 Armor Regiment, US Army. These jackets earned their nickname from the gunnery training site at Grafenwohr where they were often utilised instead of issued field jackets. These jackets were a popular choice for US Army servicemen stationed in Germany for the wet/cold seasons. As is common with these jackets, this example is made with a repurposed 50s/60s rubberised poncho shell and the lining is made with a USGI wool blanket. All items belonged to E5 Specialist Palmer who served in Vietnam with the 13th Aviation Battalion, Detachment 1 Security Police, 1st Aviation Brigade. Both uniforms include a selection of Japanese and Vietnamese-made insignia. The Vietnamese-made 13th Det. 1 pocket hanger on the Class A jacket is one of only two examples known to exist today. A lovely ARVN BDQ ERDL shirt made with sateen fabric. Notably worn by Vietnamese Rangers (Biệt Động Quân) and Vietnamese Marines as shown. The pattern closely resembles the shapes of the US M-1948 ERDL pattern, but the scale and colourway were adjusted to better suit the tropic environment. The colours of this pattern are potent and this shirt displays them beautifully. It displays minor wear and some light shadowing from a removed name patch over the left breast pocket which indicates that it was worn for at least a short while. Perhaps the tailor was drunk when he made this as the buttonholes don't quite line up with the buttons on the opposite panel making the shirt look a little wonky. As the war was ramping up in the mid-late 60s, local manufacturers were put under pressure to quickly produce uniforms and other equipment for the military, so defects and loose tolerances were certainly not uncommon. A rare example of a Korean-made MA-1 clone. Based on an early variant of the USAF MA-1 flight jacket, the only obvious differentiating features are the epaulettes and the zip-in synthetic fur liner. Made to very similar specifications, this jacket would have been worn by a ROK Air Force pilot or other flight personnel. Those who are familiar with US-issue MA-1s will notice that the materials, fittings and fixtures on this jacket are practically identical to the US counterpart and overall it matches the high quality standards that are to be expected. We believe this jacket dates to the 1960s-1970s. This really amazing item is a tailor-made Tigerstripe hunting jacket that has been modified to resemble a 1st pattern Jungle Jacket. Made in Okinawa, Japan, these hunting jackets were available to purchase from tailor shops and were made with locally produced JWD (Classic / Okinawa) pattern tigerstripe fabric. They were made with a large game pocket on the lower back, but along with other alterations, it has been removed from this jacket. Other modifications include the addition of waist adjustment tabs and a pen pocket under the left arm. The fabric is a beautiful 100% cotton midweight selvedge twill which displays the bright and vibrant colours of the pattern excellently. The jacket shows real wear and has clearly been used out in the field with light staining around the lower half and a couple of nicely made repairs. A very lovely second pattern HBT jacket from the late World War 2 era. These jackets were worn by US troops from 1943 until the end of WW2 and throughout the Korean War. This example has been modified for post-war use by shortening the pockets. Made from a soft selvedge cotton herringbone twill fabric with two chest pockets. This shirt features metal '13-Star' buttons and displays lovely, original insignia including Hawaiian Department SSI, Sergeant 1st Class rank chevrons, silk US Army branch tape and a stamped black-on-white name tape. An excellent '6-Colour Desert' DBDU coat attributed to a 101st Desert Storm Veteran. He wears an OD subdued 101st SSI on the left arm, an Army Aviation Badge and Air Assault wings above the left breast pocket, and a United States Army, South SSI on the right arm. The 101st played a crucial role during DS/DS, initially contributing to the Coalition deterrent force. Then, alongside four USAF MH-53 Pave Low Special Operations Helicopters, eight AH-64 Apache Helicopters from the 101st Abn. Div. were the first to enter Kuwait, thus beginning Operation Desert Storm. Their rapid deployment capabilities were a pivotal contribution to the liberation of Kuwait. Following the initial Air Campaign, 101st units were inserted deep into enemy territory via Helicopter-borne assaults and fought through until the end of the operation. Judging by the right SSI, it would be safe to assume this DS/DS vet also had some involvement in Operation Just Cause (Panama Invasion, 1989-1990). United States Army South Headquarters became the headquarters for Joint Task Force-South, the headquarters designated to execute the operation. The coat is an 80s 1st pattern DBDU (Desert Battle Dress Uniform) with a yoke under the collar. The yoke was designed to help reduce sun exposure to the top of the shoulders and upper back but many soldiers would remove it for comfort and to reduce heat retention. The SSI on the left arm is a lovely Vietnamese-made 9th Infantry Division patch with a black velvet panel on the lower half of the octofoil. Another beautiful piece that sold over the weekend, this is a truly lovely civilian brand hunting shirt circa. 1960s. Shown before on our Instagram, we've recently updated our photography set-up, so these new shots really show those striking colours and great details. Although the label is missing on this shirt, we can identify it as Storm-Pruf brand by comparing it against another labelled example that we have in our archives. The camouflage pattern is based on the CISO-procured Beogam pattern but has much bolder colours with reddish hues. The underside of the brim is made from a locally-produced copy of the Seawave tiger pattern as seen on another boonie that we showed previously. These hats were made under contracts that were awarded to manufacturers in Japan and Taiwan. Stamped inside with the size (in this case A-L (Asian-Large)) and ‘TO79’. The pattern is known to collectors as ‘Tadpole Dense’ (TDD). It has a 2 ¼ inch brim and two steel eyelets on either side of the crown for ventilation. These are made with a black faux-silk lining that lines the circumference of the inside, but it has been removed in this example." Worn by a member of the 1st Flight Platoon Guns ‘Playboys’, 334th Aerial Weapons Company. Activated in Okinawa, Japan on 25th July 1962 as the Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company (UTT), they were the US Army’s first Armed Helicopter Company. Redesignated as the 68th Aviation Company in August 1964, then the 197th Armed Helicopter Company on 1st March 1965 (the first Armed Helicopter Company to deployed to the Vietnam), and finally, the 334th Aerial Weapons Company. The 334th flew Huey and Cobra Gunships as part of the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, 12th Combat Aviation Group. The hat features a Playboys red beret flash insignia on the front with a ‘SORRY ABOUT THAT’ arc patch above, and a novelty “33” Export beer logo patch on the side. All the patches are Vietnamese-made hand-embroidered. Additionally, a fishing lure has been hooked through the top of the Playboy patch." A magnificent and rare experimental USAF blue tigerstripe uniform set. An excerpt from our previous post on this uniform explains a little about it's history: 'Nearing the end of the BDU era, the late-1990s to early-2000s saw a boom in US Military uniform and camouflage development throughout all four major branches. In 2003, the Air Force began the development of their own, unique uniform and camouflage pattern which was loosely based on the Vietnam-era 'Tadpole Sparse' (TDS) tigerstripe pattern. Following our post a couple of weeks ago, we've just rediscovered two more items that once belonged to Vietnam veteran Larry Pelliccioni. Accompanying his M65 (shown previously) are his jungle jacket with souvenir patches as well his utility shirt showing an 82nd Airborne Division SSI on the right arm. A rare DPM camouflage uniform set made for RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) ERTs (Emergency Reponse Team). Dated 1982, this uniform predates SERT (Special Emergency Reponse Team) which was activated in 1986 and later became JTF2 (Joint Task Force 2), a Tier 1 Special Operations Force in 1992. In 1962, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recognized the need for a specialized unit capable of handling high-risk situations. Initially known as the Special Weapons Unit, its primary focus was responding to armed and barricaded persons. Over the years, the unit expanded and evolved, and in 1977, it was officially designated as the Emergency Response Team. The ERT expanded its scope to include a wider range of tactical operations beyond just armed standoffs. Their responsibilities encompassed counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and various high-risk law enforcement operations. ERTs operate nationally across Canada, supporting regular RCMP detachments in critical incidents. They undergo rigorous training, including marksmanship, tactical operations, and crisis negotiation. Similarly to other armed police forces, ERTs are equipped with specialized, military-grade equipment, uniforms and weaponry in order to appropriately respond to incidences within their scope of operations. This uniform is made with the same material and has the same DPM camouflage print as the Canadian Airborne Regiment Para Smock as shown previously. These sets are believed to have been made in extremely limited numbers and were worn into the 1990s. A true collector's item. In contrast to earlier variations, the lining is made from JWD tigerstripe fabric instead of the typical black linen. The brim has been significantly shortened and functions more as a camouflage headpiece rather than a practical sun hat. Vietnamese-made embroidery on the front and back reads ‘AMIGO’ and ‘VIETNAM’. These hats were issued with a heatnet, designed to be worn under the hat for protection against mosquitoes and other flying insects. It has a nylon herringbone foliage band, two metal mesh screen eyelets on either side for ventilation, and a nylon lace chinstrap with a rectangular leather stopper. Made by the ‘International Hat Co.’, this example came from a 1967 contract.
