5. May 1945 - The Prague Uprising(🇨🇿Pražské povstání) The morning of 5 May 1945 began differently than usual in Prague. Strangely enough, Czech radio was not only spoken in German. Since the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (🇩🇪 Protektoriat Böhmen und Mähren,🇨🇿 Protektorát Čechy a Morava) Czech radio had been broadcast almost exclusively in German - bilingual programmes were banned by broadcasters. The morning of 5 May began with a mixture of German and Czech. Czech Radio announcers Zdeněk Mančal and Stanislav Kozák began the regular programme on their own initiative in a strange mixture of Czech and German - with the words: (It's six o'clock 🇨🇿Je právě sechs hodin). From eight o'clock onwards the programme was broadcast only in Czech. During the morning, the music programmes included compositions that were banned by the Germans. These circumstances caused a great resonance among the Czechs. At the same time, the first riots took place in the streets of Prague. Residents gathered throughout the city, German signs were torn down, the first demonstrations took place and people hoisted the Czech tricolour and Allied flags. The fact that the Allies were close to Prague further contributed to the tense situation. The Soviet units were preparing for an offensive on Prague (🇩🇪PragerOperation, 🇷🇺Пражская операция ) and the US. Army under General Patton had already reached almost the entire demarcation line and almost taken Pilsen. News about the advance of the American troops into the heart of the Protectorate spread widely between 9 and 10 o'clock. Rumours that American tanks had passed Beroun or appeared in Rudná, that Allied planes had landed in Ruzyně and many others added to the already rather tense situation. Bublik - Circular Apartment Building In Moscow, Russia During the socialist time Eastern Europe was a home to many unusual ‘brutalist’ structures, Moscow especially. Communist authorities had to industrialize and expand the cities as soon as possible because of large influx of rural population in capital cities. The Soviet authorities started to build these massive buildings and one of them was the cylindrical apartment building which was constructed in 1972 by Soviet architect Eugene Stamo and engineer Aleksandr Markelov This building is located in the district of Ochakovo-Matveevskoe (Nejinskaya, 13 street) and it is nicknamed “Bublic” among the local residents, because it just looks so much like a bagel Five buildings resembling the Olympic sign were intended to be constructed, but as they were too massive it would be hard to associate them with actual Olympic rings. Soviet housing was oriented strictly on practicality and affordability but it turned out these buildings were expensive to maintain so the whole project was abandoned and only two stand to this day.
