Private Purchase fatigues set in Poplin from Col Robert W Duke who was the head of the 1st Logistics Command from 3/1965 to 3/1966. It has size stamp on the collar. The size of the pockets are much bigger than thé 2nd pattern fatigue. Col Duke was sent to Vietnam to setup the infrastructure for massive american troops arrival. Even being a high ranking Officer but in charge of rear duty, he was not issued the jungle fatigues. As per usage, high ranking Officer had their jacket embrodered with name and tanks. Jungle Jacket from SP5 John " Doc" Helbing from the A cie, third Platoon, 4/503rd Bat, 173rd Airborne Brigade. He served in Vietnam from 7/1969 -7/1970. Unfortnately John passed away in May 8th 2022. In 2019, I managed to contact him with the email hé left on the Vietnam Wall website. You can sée how he got this shirt from the Airforce dump and reused it. Helbing attend the Oklahoma Military Academy from 1966-1967. He participated in drill team, color guard, wrestling and was the first sergeant of A company. After completing his freshman year at OMA, Helbing transferred to the University of Wisconsin. The 1968 draft interrupted his studies. He served in the Army for three years and then returned to the University of Wisconsin to graduate with honors in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health. During his three years of military service, Helbing served with the 173rd ABN and the 82nd Airborne achieving the rank of Specialist 5th Class. He was a platoon combat medic and then promoted to a company senior medic. For his service he received the Combat Medical badge, the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medial with Device, the Parachute Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Marksman Rifle. Helbing was honorably discharged from the Army in 1971 and joined the Wisconsin National Guard. Jungle Jacket belonged to Lt Col Charles A Stewart Jr (20/03/1925-12/01/2015) and used during his 2nd tour in Vietnam from 07/1969-07/1970 while serving as Surgeon. Lt Col Stewart served 30 years with the Army until 1972. The worn out ARVN pocket patch was the South Vietnamese Médical Corps. The altération is due to the use of the brush to clean by Vietnamese laundry. Jungle Shirt from the PO 2 Galle from the 15th River Assault Squadron. The star on the sleeve means he was also the Boat Captain, according to his ribbon bars, he made 2 tours in Vietnam. All patches are local made. Members of this unit , unlike other Riverine units, wore the camouflage béret with flash on the left rather than the black beret. The 15th River Assault Division belonged to the TF117 that ferried and supported units from the 9th ID. During the end of the 50s and early 60s, these camos started being phasing out and replaced with Mitchell camos, tailor shops in Okinawa used them to make garments for hunting markets but also for units that required the use of Camo, Marines Force Recon was one of them. Tour jacket was one of the favorite souvenir to bring home by GIs , mostly to gift to their children. The design was quite standard, mostly black or in Camo from the Poncho Liner, other colors existed but rarer. Since they were mass produced and the customers rarely come back to complaint the quality, most of them were poorly made, with cheap fabric (coton or satin), easily broken zipper. Thé hand embroderies look nice today because we are used with machine embroderies but they can be considered as simple and crude by périod standards. This one has a little personnalisation with the jumpwing, the tiger and dragons are also out of standards. Japanese made fatigue jacket for Sergeant Clifford Spalding Jr (22 Dec 1942 - 14 May 2015) from an Army Security Agency unit. The shirt and the tapes are typical japanese made suggesting he got them during his deployment in Chitose maybe at the beginning of the 60s. The main feature of the japanese made fatigue jacket are the chest pockets are fake, their access are made from the inside. ASA units were in charge of Radio Researches, they were either based in TSN airport at Davis Station or attached to several filed units. Jungle jacket from Lt Tom Cossaboom. Tom Cossaboom was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1944. In 1968, Cossaboom volunteered for the United States Army, beginning his 24 years of service. From 1969 through 1970, Cossaboom served in Southeast Asia with Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 11th Brigade, Americal Division as Assistant Brigade S-5 (PSYOPS, Civil Affairs), ranked first as a 2nd Lieutenant, then promoted to 1st Lieutenant. During this time, Cossaboom was stationed at Fire Support Base Bronco, Duc Pho, Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam. After the creation of the ARVN, the Airborne kept using mostly French Jump uniforms, the regular Army used the green French fatigues TTA, the newly created Marines Batalion also adopted the TTA cut but made it with their distinctive Tiger Stripe more appropriate for the swamp or river where they operated. 1964 dated ARVN Camo fatigues set in a 2nd pattern of the Huyet Bloodcake Camo. This Camo was inspired from the WW2 British brushstroke Camo used by the French paratroopers during the 1st Indochina War. Therefore, this pattern was reproduced in the early 60s and mainly issued to Airborne soldiers (paratroopers or spécial forces). It was discontinued in 65 and progressively replaced by the ERDL Camo. Remaining Stocks were seized and kept for Airborne officers and their US advisors and used until the end of the War. This shirt has the added jungle style lower pockets that were taken from jungle style fatigues in the same fabric (mostly used by the LLDB). The mod is not very aesthetic and was probably one of a kind but I found pictures of the famous Franco Vietnamese War photographier Henri Huet (1927-1971) wearing a similar one during the Cambodia campagne in 1970, one could speculate it could be from him (but not the one shown in the picture). Henri died in the Hélicopter crash in Cambodia with Larry Borrows, Ken Potter, Keizaburo Shimamoto and Tu Vu during the Lamson 719 in Laos in 10 Feb 1971. Shirt from Cpt Thomas J Aubin ( July 4th 1937- Jan 30 2020) when he was advisor of the ARVN 7th Infantry Division from 1969-1970. He was a Captain in the Rhode Island National Guard from 1955 until becoming a full time active duty officer in the US Army in 1967 when he was sent to Vietnam to serve as Combat Engineer. Mr Aubin served two tours Vietnam, where he was awarded two bronze stars. Advisor usually wore the same outfit of the units they advised. While wearing US fatigues with MACV SSI, they wore the ARVN patch on their pocket, and the rank on their shirt or headgear. Tan beret was the ARVN Infantry officer and NCO beret but it was not often worn, caps or bonnie hats were prefered. ERDL Camo set from TSgt Théodore R Atwood (1932-2010) who served 36 years with the USAF, did 1 tour in Korea and 2 tours in Vietnam. His last tour was with the 18th SOS Stinger flying the AC-119 gunship. It was unsual to see ERDL Camo fatigues worn by USAF flying personnel. The shirt has all local made Insignias and a nice 18th SOS Stinger variant patch. The 18th SOS later transfered its planes to the VNAF.
