Today in MilAvHist, 5/16/1986, the movie Top Gun was released. The movie cost $15mil to make and grossed over $356mil! To compare, Top Gun: Maverick has earned over $1.4 billion and production costs were in the neighborhood of around $160mil. In 1986, the number I've seen is a 500% increase in applicants for Naval Aviation. It was also a major recruiting tool for the US Navy, in large cities, recruiters would set up tables and tents at theaters to "sign 'em up". This Naval Flight Officer was in week one of Aviation Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola when the movie premiered, so life was pretty miserable and going to the movies would not happen until the end of August to see Top Gun. But, despite an extremely hot and difficult Florida summer, seeing and hearing jets flying all day and night was pretty motivational to get through the training and start flying Navy! Static display in those years was full of various aircraft but found a Navy Prowler out of static probably as visitor it was a nice surprise and for who like me that lived the Prowlers in Aviano during the Bosnia/Kosovo/Libya ops, bring back many memories. It’s time for another screen-used Tomcat profile!! Tonight’s airframe is Bureau Number : 160680 from VF-111 Sundowners, NL-211. Dressed for the film as Iceman’s VFA-213 Fist of the Fleet. This F-14A Tomcat had very little screen time but it does make a couple appearances in notable scenes. It first shows up on screen as part of the backdrop to Charlie’s hangar “classroom” introduction. In the establishing wide shot 160680 can be seen parked just behind Jester/ Viper’s A-4 Skyhawk. It next appears along the Miramar flight line during the famous “Need For Speed” scene. The radome of the tomcat is just bout all that is visible in this scene. It can be identified by it’s Modex number 211. 160680 is reported to have frequently been down for maintenance. This occurred so frequently that the airframe developed a reputation as a “Hangar Queen.” Regardless of this title It did serve for an additional 9 years after the filming of Top Gun. The airframe was delivered to the USN in October 1978. During its career it served with VF-111, VF-21, VF124, VF-2, and finally VF-101. It was sent to the boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB in March of 1995. Its useful parts were stripped to support the remaining fleet of F-14’s. What does it take to put a propellor that is 13 feet in diameter, about 350 lbs. in weight, on to a crankshaft 9 feet off the ground? Teamwork! Every five years, the TBM Avenger's Hamilton Standard Hydromatic propellor must be removed, sent to a shop and inspected for corrosion. Doris Mae's prop came back with a clean bill of health. Welcome to NAS Fallon Nevada, home to TOPGUN Naval Fighter Weapons School and also home to this Grumman F-14A Tomcat BuNo 159626. Delivered by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation of Bethpage NY on November 11, 1975 to Fighter Squadron 124 at NAS Miramar. December 9, 1975 having been giving a thumbs up from the Rag it was sent to the Checkmates of Fighter Squadron 211. BuNo 159626 would next head to the Aardvarks of VF-114. In 159626’s next transfer, it would make its way to the Black Lions of Fighter Squadron 213. Approaching the end of its career, it would serve at Fighter Weapons School “TOPGUN” (When a Tomcat was sent to Fallon to serve as an aggressor, well it’s usually because it has reached its service limits). October 7, 1994 would be this Big Fighters last day of service with the United States Navy. In the last two photos, you see the F-22 has made an emergency landing on Fallons runway. NAS Fallon welcomes everybody, even if you have an in-flight emergency, unlike another local Air Force base in the area 👽, where you’re definitely not welcome military or not for any reason. Note: 159626 Never served with VF-2 so we are not sure why it carries a Bullet paint job, when it was retired in ‘94 it was painted back to the Blacklions of VF-213 of which it served proudly, the latest is VF-2.
