Wonderful visit to @newlynexchange to see the amazing paintings and installation by @nicola_bealing - the top floor room is amazing - would have loved a sound piece as well to top it off (and that’s me partially deaf and not always responding well to sound in gallery spaces). The colours in the paintings are amazing and the hanging flotsam findings and made things are so beautiful, creepy and intriguing. The dark dark blue wall is just perfect and as always the staff at Newlyn were friendly and helpful. Shame I ended up in an and e a few hours later but Penzance did not disappoint for my penultimate day @brisons_veor . Naoshima Art Island Located south of Osaka, this tiny island is nestled in the stunning Seto Inland Sea and is known for its contemporary art and architecture. Greeted at the ferry port by one of Yayoi Kusama’s iconic black and red pumpkins, it is the minimalist Benesse House Museum designed by Tadeo Ando which is the focal point of the island, a huge yellow and black Kusama pumpkin sitting on a pier looking out to sea marks the spot. A gallery and hotel with numerous outdoor installations dotted around the grounds, the Benesse art collection includes works by Kusama, Richard Long and Hockney amongst others, all framed against the sea and rolling landscape through the terraces and windows set into the concrete walls of Ando’s architecture. The Chichu Museum and Lee Ufan Museum nearby, both also Tadeo Ando designed are partially submerged into the landscape, recognisable only by their outdoor installations. Each contains works by acclaimed artists (Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria and of course Lee Ufan) some commissioned, often site specific, all engaging one way or another with the light and landscape of the island and the internal spaces created by the architecture. Naoshima also houses numerous installations, museums and art projects which are dotted across the island but it is Kusama’s iconic, dotty Pumpkins which visitors queue up to photograph first, links from the known to the unknown and signposts to a world where art, architecture and nature coexist. 1. I can’t believe I’m about to exhibit alongside one of my childhood art heroes! As a young girl, I remember visiting Shen Jiawei’s Bundeena studio with my mother. His wall-to-wall frescoes left me in awe, and I even mustered the courage to ask for his autograph—such a fan moment, hahaha. 🙈Dreams really do come truuuue . Shen Jiawei has recently completed his epic history painting “Tower of Babel,” a project he dedicated ten years to. We will both be sharing the documentation of our cherished works in this upcoming exhibition. It’s fascinating how, after completing such a monumental project, you often feel a mix of relief and a bit of uncertainty about what comes next. I’m secretly eager to ask Jiawei about his feelings now that he’s finished. . Come catch my intrusive installation responding and challenging the context of the typically private toilet stall, Reflect: You and Your Thoughts. Reflect: You and Your Thoughts is a conceptual installation inclined to create subtle discomfort in a space that is typically associated with privacy and safety, a toilet cubicle. In contrast to the usual private bathroom/toilet stall where the user does not even witness themselves from a third person's viewpoint, the mirrors intend to make viewers feel bare and in the open, breaking the wall of private-public and raising the notion of privacy with oneself. Responding to the space, Reflect: You and Your Thoughts is a site specific installation tailored to any bathroom cubicle. As audiences experience this piece, they become an active participant of the installation and space.
