Anklebiter layout for @madartseattle #madfinale show is mostly done. There’s a few tweaks I want to make with fresh eyes and I need to do a part count to make sure I have all the older pieces since the Press Play Anklebiter composition is up in the @cornishcollegeofthearts alumni gallery through August (for some reason my brain thought that came down in May which caused some interesting hiccups with the new parts I made for that install). There will probably be a few tweaks on site since this is weaving underneath an awkward pipe system and there are other pieces near me that I didn’t know the exact foot print of when measuring everything out. But reacting to the site is the part that makes installation fun! The show opens June 7th 6:30-8:30 pm and is up until July 13th. This is the last MadArt show and features work of over 50 artists they’ve worked with over the last 15 years. First week of install is starting strong! We’ve had a flow of artists loading in their works, including a vibrant mural painted by @kita.licious that’s already brightening our space. While finished pieces are being dropped off and installed, there are also a number of new works being made in the studio such as this wooden sculpture by @claytonbinkley With lots of movement and creativity, we’re clearing out upstairs and painting surfaces to make way for the incredible pieces of MAD STUDIO. Got back to removing the mask from the new Anklebiter parts since I couldn’t sleep through headache that keeps slipping on and out of the nasty chest cold I’ve been battling. Still a tad behind where I want these to be for the @madartseattle #madfinale show but getting a little bit done made me feel a bit more normal. 3/4 of the way though this stage and a full box to do any edge touch ups and final QC. Hope to get back to the gallery layout soon but screens have been a bit harsh when I hit the headaches so I’ll just be peeling off mask until this not-covid-and-not-strep-throat-but-some-thing-stupid-nasty clears up. Sooooooo glad it didn’t hit until a few hours after I finished the laser cutting these though! Masking parts for laser cutting flash time and real time. Mask protects the screen print during transport and protects the part from back flashing and getting a resinous sheen on the face near the edge during the cutting. I’ve used this method of masking since 2007 when I was working at the Sign-A-Rama in old town Philadelphia a block away from Ben Franklin’s printshop. It was the one skill I picked up at that shop that is at the core of my practice now. Start a tail on the mask using the weight of the roll to pull it out evenly. Lightly tack on the part and use an empty tube (equal or greater in length) to lay it out wrinkle free. Use a squeegee to fully tack to the part. I’m using a felt squeegee here because it lays just enough surface area to get it to bond without bubbles but will still be easy to pull off after the cuts are made. Also two sides of 72 parts is hard on the hands with a plastic squeegee. I love a half moon felt squeegee. They’re so gentle on the part (especially useful for laying down unmasked vinyl floods). Edges get trimmed so they will line up with my registration jig in the cutter. Then it’s time to grab another part and start the whole cycle again. I spent last weekend writing about how my brain calms down from all the repetitive tasks in printmaking. The world can be spinning out but if I’ve got a little routine of 5 or 10 steps I can calm down think about art and stories and let my brain just be itself. Even after the actual printing is done there are all the finishing steps and each one becomes a little ritual. A part of a pattern. I took the tendency to ruminate that gnaws away at me and found a way to channel that into a productive art practice. These new parts are for the final show @madartseattle opening in June. This piece was conceived early in the pandemic when every day was some new danger. It’s official! Anklebiter will be part of @madartseattle final show in June. I totally fell in love with the twisty pipes and can’t wait to have this modular print weave in and out of them. I’m currently printing the new pieces of this edition to accommodate the tighter turns on site. The piece is up to 46 parts and here’s a lot of print geekery on this 4th go round, since I’ve been thinking about students printing odd stuff lately - Raised the screen on scrap of the 1/4” MDF (corners knocked off if they’re at risk of going past the frame). Off contact is raised the same plus my standard two quarters. Tabs are scrap mdf stuck to press bed with Orafoil tape. Requires a sharp twist to come off or a palate knife. Retape every time they’re removed. Other side of vacuum press blocked with same height scrap to increase vacuum. knocked corners on tabs were harder to register so I usually pad with tape on underside if I’m printing more than 20 of each image. A slight lift at the end of the stroke keeps puncturing from occurring. Could also pad tape along part edge if heavy handed. Swiffered every part and thwapped to get the bulk of the dust off before bringing to print shop and a hand swipe to knock off stack dust before placing part. Have used tack cloth but I’m out this go round. (if you’re printing plastic don’t skip the tack cloth with all the static!) Ink is TW graphics waterbase 5500 with a decent amount of halftone base to keep it fluid (barely decipherable formula on first image in grams) Pretreat screen (1:4 409/water) to keep ink from freezing in mesh. Mdf is a sponge!!! 3 staggered pulls then a new flood and pull was doing the best coverage & sinking in to any crevices or scratches. Yes I I really do flip every part on the first color to make sure I’m doing the best side.
