However, Star of the Sea resists rigid classifications, just like its hexagonal shape resists a straightforward reading as a star. It is neither this, nor that, yet can be perceived as all of those forms at once. It might be an alien object that has landed on the beach or it may be a potential ruin. The home is such a structure - an architecture of living that reflects all the critical and quotidian details that make up one’s life. “T’ve always been interested in the domestic. Hijacking things that we’re familiar with and essentially occupying them”, says Rashid Johnson. Rashid appropriates the cube-form from Sol LeWitt’s 3C Half Off Piece (1969), on display in the adjacent room, for the structure of his new sculpture Home 2023), at the center of this gallery. He fills the structure with life, ideas, sounds, and memories. The plants, books, and other elements are elements that open a different register of abstraction, but also serve as marks and gestures through which, as Rashid says, “I want to be engaged, like you can be.” This is an invitation. All living and non-living matter contains energy, a force that connects every particle of the Universe – be they a blade of grass, a stone, an insect, a human body or a comet. For the spider, its Umwelt is one of vibration. Essentially blind, the web-building spider creates an image of the world with the vibrational tremors it sends and receives through the web, functioning as an instrument for transmission and reception. Together with spiders and their webs, scientists, and those who engage situated knowledge, Tomás Saraceno and the project-community Arachnophilia has expanded the possibilities for inter- and intra-species relations. The installation for Radical Playgrounds translates onto the ground the vibrations of Holocnemus pluchei, Steatoda bipunctata, and other local spiders, opening possibilities for attuning to non-human ways of being. Developed in conversation with Arachnophilia member Roland Mühlethaler, Play-Ground is a walk-in installation where cobble- stones shake according to frequencies of the spiders’ and cos- mic web. If playgrounds are places where we learn through play, this area offers other lessons in planetary re/creation. Like the so-called butterfly effect, which posits a causal relation between a butterfly flapping its wings in one place and winds that swirl to form a tornado in another, this installation directs vibrations elsewhere.
