We were asked to give responses on “How is animism part of your practice?” and “What is your relationship to nonhumans?”, where artists responded in various forms such as video works, sound recordings, video extracts, photographs and written reflections. . At that time I was trying to write something and make connections between spirits(unseen) and technological(signal) interference, such as moments of technical error where everything on the device seems well connected but somehow the device just don’t work? Or recording devices recorded sounds that weren’t there when listening to the playback… . These experiences made me feel that technological / signal devices could react or connect to the energy presence of a site. . My personal favourite was this excerpt from Juanita Onzaga, “As you study your ancestors’ history, as you try to understand your own story and how it unfolds from their paths, when you create with this knowledge, it is them, your ancestors, who write through you.” . . This was a group project done in 2018 with two other artists, Au Yong Yu Ting & Yew Jun Ken, revolving around the idea of development & urbanization, among others. . We visited abandoned spaces along the Klang river, created site-specific installations, collected materials and reconstructed them in the exhibition space that was in proximity to the founding rivers of Kuala Lumpur - the confluence between the Gombak and Klang rivers. . During the creation of this work, the Merdeka 118 building was still under construction. One of the sound installation work involves placing sensors on the rooftop. To our surprise, the sensors keep getting activated though there are no visible activities nearby. . Initially attributing it to a malfunction, I then learned that the heavy machinery equipments on the surrounding construction sites generated significant levels of electromagnetic interference, contributing to the cause. . Photosynthesis printing on weeds, Google Maps, QR code, Video, Mozilla Hubs, Webpage . . This webwork branches from the joint research on visualising inner journeys of ritualistic experiences that took place in the Batu, Indonesia bull trance ritual. The artist transcribed thoughts that mushroomed alongside the research into an alternate reality ride that invites viewers to stride along. . Associating urban weeds with the undertone of being diasporic and dispersed, the journey starts with digital notes that span across spaces, together with photosynthesis prints on weeds as guidance to walk through the space. The journey delivers an animist worldview to the day-to-day urban settings, carefully threading between cybernetics and spirits transmission. . . In this 2024, wishing all of us having the best time of our lives🌿 - 2022 kinda hit rock bottom for me. The house was in a mess, sudden death of my cat followed by my mum broke/lost her leg and issues of spirits in the house. We didn’t even get to catch a breath or grieve properly over things that happened. . In 2023 we started to do a lot of hospital errands & checkups, at the same time trying to balance between living our own purpose & age care for mum. . At that point I felt that everything was rewritten, it’s like we’re being tied together on a sinking boat. Overwhelmed, emotions are down accompanied by everyday constant cries of pain.. . Sayings such as you're free to do anything and go anywhere felt like a privilege. . Fast forward to 2024, it’s funny and amazing at the same time to see the point of change within me in this 1-2 years transition, which I started to not mind taking roles that I was hesitant to do in the past, and since we've gone through all these things up till now I felt so strong and empowered.
