It is a consideration of gradual mournful consumption. It showcases the inability to absorb anything more, rendering it futile and unable to fulfill its original purpose. GMoA OOW: Thomas Hart Benton, born in Neosho, Missouri, in 1889, was a well-known muralist whose subject matter focused on the rural, working-class American. His work would be influenced by the effects of the Great Depression on the country. Benton's subject matter reflected the lives of his fellow Missourians at the time, and he felt that his depiction of his home state would act as a social commentary for the time in which he lived. Along with being a celebrated muralist, Benton was also a printmaker, as seen in the lithograph above, Letter from Overseas. Lithography is a printmaking process where a design is drawn onto a flat stone which is then affixed by a chemical reaction and later printed from.
