“No hay pasado original que redimir: existe el vacío, la orfandad, la tierra sin bautizar de los orígenes, el tiempo que nos mira desde dentro de la tierra. Hay, sobre todo, la búsqueda del origen”. Así comienza en palabras de la artista la exposición “Ana Mendieta. En busca del origen” (fot. 1) en el @MUSAC, que termina justo en 2 semanas, el 19 de mayo, por lo que, ¡Corred insensatos! Ana Mendieta (1958-1985) (fot. 2), fue una artista cubana, obligada a exiliarse a Estados Unidos durante la Revolución de Fidel Castro. Su obra gira en torno a la naturaleza y su relación con el cuerpo, tocando con ello cuestiones de género e identidad, investigando también sobre mitos originales y el arte rupestre. Pese a su prematura muerte, posiblemente asesinada con solo 36 años, se consagró como una de las principales artistas del siglo XX. Es a través de esta muestra, con alrededor de 100 obras (fot. 3), donde sin tener un carácter retrospectivo, celebra 15 años de actividad artística dividida en 8 secciones, donde podemos encontrar esculturas (fot. 4), performances, fotografías (fot. 5) y mucho más, destacando como algunas de las obras expuestas nunca se habían dejado ver y otras se descubrieron en hace un par de años, remarcando la importancia de la exposición. El espacio del MUSAC resulta idóneo para la muestra, sobre todo por su sobriedad y amplitud, lo que permitió que se instalaran obras GRAN formato, teniendo así una gran variedad, pero a su vez espacio y gran cantidad de obras, no resultando agobiante en ese sentido. El MUSAC nos trae a escena una artista de enorme importancia a nivel social, político y artístico, con una reinvención plasmada en la gran trayectoria artística, pese a su corta vida, siendo así la mayor exposición sobre Ana Mendieta de los últimos 25 años. 1. Book Review: Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez 5⭐️ Catnip Tropes: 1990s nostalgia, art museums, Cuban culture This dual timeline story about feminism in the art world struck all the right chords with me. In 1985, Anita De Monte fights to find her place in the art world while living with a controlling, cheating (and most likely murderous) husband. Nearly 20 years after Anita’s tragic death, a young art history student named Raquel discovers the revolutionary artist. As Raquel digs into Anita’s history, she finds her own relationship and struggle for notoriety is unsettlingly similar to the woman she is studying. This story is loosely based on that of Ana Mendieta, an 80s artist who was thrown from a window by her husband. I loved that connection and it made me very interested in learning more about Mendieta’s life and art. This book resonated with me in large part because it reminded me of my own college relationship, in which I struggled to truly be myself and became wrapped up in the artistic goals of another person. He repeatedly made it clear that his life’s accomplishments and motivations were superior to my own, but it took a major betrayal for me to finally distance myself. The fact that this book took place at basically the same time as my own story made me empathize with Raquel of a deep level. I loved her anger and the way she used it to discover her true power. The subtle magic of Anita’s ghost was both funny and poignant. I felt her rage and it was very satisfying to see her get the ultimate revenge. 🎨Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xóchitl González🎨 I am feeling behind on April reviews. I used to love writing them but now it feels like a chore so I’m not sure what reviews will look like in the future. But I could not let April go by without highlighting this fantastic book. After reading and loving Olga Dies Dreaming, Xóchitl González has become an auto buy author for me. And Anita de Monte did not disappoint! I haven’t read a lot of books set in the art world so it was interesting to see a bit of the behind the scenes. This is a dual perspective book following an up and coming artist Anita de Monte and her tumultuous life (and death) in 1985 and Rhode Island School of Design art student Raquel in 1998. Both are navigating a white centric art world as Latina women and this books illustrates how hard it is to be a women of color in more “elitist” and “prestigious” culture. I think it’s important to note that the character Anita de Monte is based on a very real Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, who also died under suspicious circumstances. ANITA DE MONTE LAUGHS LAST was interesting and thought-provoking, but fell a little flat for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I loved the Anita storyline — it was passionate, juicy, and sprinkled with magical realism. And MY GOSH, you guys, it’s inspired by the real life artist Ana Mendieta. 😳 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I thought Raquel’s storyline was kind of sad and even a little dull in comparison to Anita’s… So for me, the way the two storylines interacted was a miss. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gonzalez is ruminating on some really important topics in the book — most notably identity and erasure — and I loved the book for those conversations. Raquel Toro, a third-year art history student at Brown, discovers the work of forgotten Cuban artist Anita de Monte, long overshadowed by the life and career of her more famous husband Jack Martin, and begins to sense a kinship with this ambitious Cuban immigrant who struggled to make it in the hierarchal world of modern art. Raquel feels a similar pressure as a middle-class student of color on a campus filled with privileged students, and in an academic department that seems centered primarily on the study of established male artists. When Raquel falls for a wealthy white upperclassman, an up-and-coming artist named Nick Fitzsimmons, whose attraction to her is mixed with an impulse to mold and control, the dual storylines of Anita and Raquel begin to echo each other in fascinating and frightening ways. “Picture Perfect Female” - November 2023 My work explores the ideas of the female body and the ways it is presented in modern media. I drew formal inspiration from Ana Mendieta and Bruce Nauman. Conceptually Mendieta’s work really inspired me, specifically her series called: “Untitled, Glass on Body Imprints”. In this work, she distorts her face using glass panels as a commentary against societal biases that she has faced due to her identity as a female. My work dives into this idea of distorting the female body with the intent to reconstruct societal standards. However, I have brought a more modern take to it, looking at it through the lens of the digital age. All images are slightly out of focus with the exposure scale center to represent this idea of taking and editing an image on a digital device. Modern media asks and expects female bodies to look a certain way and my work hopes to deconstruct these ideals and force viewers to critically think about the relationship between the female body and modern media. #photography #anamendieta #brucenauman

This being my second Xochitl Gonzalez novel, I thought I knew what I was going to get but I got that and so much more! What I love most about Gonzalez’s writing is her ability to so eloquently articulate the systems and structures in our America today. The constant push and pull of it all. It’s like peeking behind the curtain in the lives of the first world and the third world and how these factions intersect, combust and impact our current day societal norms beliefs and expectations. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗫𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿. The themes in this book surrounding academia and family of first generation college students were immensely relatable to my lived experience. Un día en el que no está de más hablar de una artista que hizo de la naturaleza un elemento primordial de su obra. Para Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) la Madre Tierra era un lugar en el que encontrar refugio. En la naturaleza consiguió conectar cuerpo y alma; en el medio natural encontró un lugar en el que poder dialogar con su propia historia. Allí, Ana Mendieta se liberaba del desarraigo que sentía como emigrante cubana en los Estados Unidos Al cubrirse con flores, al mimetizarse con un árbol pasaba a formar parte de un todo en el que las diferencias no importaban. La obra de Ana Mendieta es inmensa a pesar de su corta vida. Transitó por caminos que, luego, otras personas quisieron recorrer. Es una pionera del arte del cuerpo, de las performances y del land art. Ana Mendieta usó su cuerpo para crear obras impactantes a pesar de su fugacidad; dejó su huella sobre la tierra. Sus siluetas nos hablan, nos cuentan su deseo de conectar el pasado y el presente. Sus creaciones muestran su estudio de la tradición espiritual afroamericana y de la santería y convierten así al arte en un medio de sanación. Lo que la tierra nos ofrece de forma directa es más que suficiente para denunciar la violencia, la injusticia y la violación. La naturaleza nos da los elementos para quemar, para crear, para nacer, para empezar. Sirven para hablar de pasado, presente y futuro. En el bosque o en el mar; en los ríos o en distintos paisajes podemos recuperar la memoria y conocer nuestra historia; es ahí en donde Mendieta nos propone conectar con lo profundo y con lo espiritual. El agua, el fuego, el barro, la sangre, las hojas o las flores están en su obra y son protagonistas de sus fotografías, sus dibujos, sus películas, sus performances o sus esculturas. The photographic and filmic documents of these ephemeral works suggest the fragility of the human being in relation to the forces of nature. While photographs from the Silueta Series are often presented individually, seen together, they suggest Mendieta’s sustained interest in various female archetypes and the cycles of nature and life. __________ ¡Feliz Día de la Tierra desde CIFO! In 1987–88 the New Museum presented the first major retrospective of Ana Mendieta’s work, which included 30 documentary color photographs of the Silueta series, in which her body was traced in the landscape; black and white photographic blowups of rock carvings located in Cuba; early drawings on leaves; floor sculptures made from sand and earth; tree trunk sculpture with feminine images carved and burnt into the surface; and documentation of various performance works. Anita De Monte Laughs Last By Xochitl Gonzalez Genre: general / historical fiction with a bit of magical realism! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5 April Get Lit readalong pick that I hosted with @haylee.reads !! This is based on the real life and work of Ana Mendieta and her husband Carl Andre. The story follows art history student, Raquel, as she navigates being a Latina student in a white washed environment, stepping into her own while discovering Anita’s mysterious life and death, allegedly at the hands of her husband. Anita herself remains involved - you’ll see. 😅 After reading this story, I of course had to look up more information about Ana and Carl. I recommend looking at their work as you read. Interestingly, Carl died IRL just a month before this book was published. Obviously, this story is only one perspective.. but I have to say that feels oddly satisfying after having read it. The writing itself switches POVs and with it, narrative styles! Anita is in 1st person and Raquel and Jack (her husband) are in 3rd. I feel that this choice really aids the magical realism aspects of the book and keeps the flow of the story interesting. Ultimately, I was rooting for both of these women as they grappled with abuse and manipulation, legacy, and the output of their energy and confidence in themselves. I am grateful that Gonzalez chose this story to tell - I didn’t know of Mendieta before, but I’m happy to know her now! TWs: emotional abuse, domestic violence, racism, ED

Ana Mendieta - untitled (Silueta series), 1978 Working in Iowa and Mexico, she carved and shaped her figure into the earth, with arms overhead to represent the merger of earth and sky; floating in water to symbolize the minimal space between land and sea; or with arms raised and legs together to signify a wandering soul.
