Liv, stonerbabynails the incredibly talented Indigenous nail artist from the Bay, (420 friendly too!!) transformed my vision into a tangible work of art. As this month I am on a series of back-to-back conferences centered around the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), a cause close to my heart representing Indigenous youth within the child welfare system, I sought to make a profound statement. Liv, understanding the intersectionality of these struggles, helped me craft a set of nails that would ignite meaningful conversations in these national spaces. On my index fingers, Liv delicately etched a red handprint, symbolizing the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, #mmiw while an orange feather charm paid tribute to the residential Native schools in Canada, intimately connected to the child welfare system and #ICWA . The middle fingers were adorned with meticulously placed beads, following a traditional beading pattern, representing our resilience and history. A nod to a time when we forbidden to wear beaded jewelry. The ring fingers featured Thunderbird, embodying strength and power, alongside Kokopelli, a personal symbol of my journey, from an Indigenous artisan during my first time visiting New York at 20 (3yrs) my very first bag was made by an indigenous man and that symbol has followed me since. Kokopelli's duality as both a trickster and a symbol of fertility good fortune and prosperity, resonates with the essence of my career, centered around children and their significance. He’s always held a special space since I’ve seen his symbol everywhere I go 🫶🏽 The thumb nail showcased the medicine wheel, a sacred symbol of balance and harmony in Indigenous cultures. Lastly, the pinky fingers boasted Liv's interpretation of a ribbon skirt nail, a testament to our cultural identity and resilience. These nails, each bearing profound significance, serve as a revolutionary conversation starter, shedding light on the enduring strength and resilience of our community in the face of an ongoing struggle and genocide. Thank you, Liv, for crafting these powerful symbols that amplify our voices and stories.

Delores "DeeDee" Brown was last seen July 27th, 2015 on Penelakut Island, British Columbia, Canada. Her body was found by kayakers in the water off of another small island called Norway Island three weeks later. Investigators ruled her death a homicide. DeeDee was 19. On the night of DeeDee's disappearance there was an Indigenous games event on the island. DeeDee was last seen at the beach with friends but never made it home afterward. Searches were held all over the island until her body was found. Cause of death hasn't been released but investigators ruled it a homicide. An electronic billboard was put up south of Duncan in 2022. It is located on the southbound side of the Trans-Canada Hwy across from the Old Farm Market. Her family continues to search for justice and it's hoped the billboard will help. If you have any information in the murder of 19-year-old Indigenous woman Delores "DeeDee" Brown please call the Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215. Any information is helpful. #SilenceIsBetrayal #Canada #BritishColumbia #PenelakutIsland #MMIW #MMIP #UnsolvedAndUnknown

Yesterday was amazing. I felt blessed and honored to be a part of this event and to be in the company of so many inspirational women I admire in so many ways. This room was full of people that care to make a difference. I always feel like I’m horrible at speaking and anxiety at times rules my life, but I’m getting better everyday. Because I continue pushing myself out of my comfort zone.. No matter how I may feel. I try my best everyday. Just hearing these women and feeling the power of these strong Women in this room yesterday was such a blessing. Thank you so much Camille Mercier-Shultz for allowing me to be a part of this discussion. You are such an inspiration to us all. We are so blessed to have you in our community. For our youth. Stolen not forgotten. As the world spins women, 2spirits and children fall in harms way on a daily basis due to a induced violence by a settler state. Violence, a fundamental trait that has carved the way for its american society, the force behind all its accumulated commodities, resources and colonial subjects. Blood has split mountains to pave way for its imperial tanks to roll over bodies to accomplish it’s parasitic dream. But today, the cry of mothers once hidden with the wind can be heard globally now. A shared song. Respect to the sisters, aunties, and cousins living in the offensive to bring awareness to this colonial disease. To all active members uplifting voices, putting in the work into community, dismantling propaganda and imperialism, Salute #mmiw

In the early morning hours of October 5th, 2014, Melissa Eagleshield, 42, vanished into the night on a road just south of Island Lake, Minnesota. She was walking along CR 126 between 330 am and 5 am. It was only a few degrees about freezing that morning. Melissa was staying with a friend at the time. She left behind all her belongings, including her shoes and purse. She walked away and was never seen again. Fourteen hours after she disappeared, her cousin called in a missing persons report. Police were fast in determining that she was last seen at a house on Jager Road. The man who resided there told investigators that he last saw her at 5 am and had assumed she'd gotten a ride or went to meet someone. By 10 pm that night, searchers were at the property, including helicopters and search dogs. The dogs tracked her scent through swampy land around the house. They lost the trail around a beaver dam a mile away. Melissa was 5'1 and 155 lbs with light brown hair and hazel eyes. She was wearing a black shirt and sweatpants with a Southpark logo. Melissa had a head wound with staples at the time and has health concerns that need tending to. Her maiden name was Anderson and her nickname was Mitz. Melissa was known to hitchhike. Melissa is descended from the White Earth Nation. She had her first child at 15 and her struggle with substance abuse disorder - alcohol started around the same time. Melissa is described as funny, spunky, and outgoing woman. Please call the Becker County Sheriff with any information on the whereabouts of Melissa Eagleshield at 218-847-2661. #silenceisbetrayal #Minnesota #IslandLake #MMIW #MMIP #MelissaEagleshield #UnsolvedAndUnknown

Persons include women (W), girls (G) and two spirited (2S). Bringing attention to Native children who are endangered runaways is crucial to protecting their safety, as they may be more susceptible to becoming victims of crime. Samantha Paul Age: 26 Samantha was reported missing sometime between September 9th-17th, 2013, from Kamloops, British Columbia. On June 1st, 2014, her skull was found on a trail between Campbell Lake and White Lake, Southeast of Kamloops. While her death has not officially been ruled a homicide, police agree that it would have been unlikely that she got herself to the remote area without a car or other transportation. Unfortunately, there are very few details about Samantha prior to her death and disappearance, and even the details that are available are mixed. Some sources also have her age as 25. It is also unknown whether the rest of her body was found, or if her skull was the only thing recovered. 💡 Reflecting on the Indigenizing Disability Justice Event! Yesterday, we gathered for an impactful event led by Crushing Colonialism's Executive Director, @jendeerinwater, who illuminated crucial statistics: "50.3% of Native people are more likely to have a disability than the national average." She defined disability justice as honoring difference, advocating for respect across disability, identity, and culture to foster true inclusion in society. The event featured an array of insightful speakers: 1. Angela Miracle Gladue, known as Lunacee and Miss Chief Rocka, a nêhiyâw (Plains Cree) and lead dancer for @thehallucination. 2. Audrey Huntley, of European settler and Indigenous ancestry. 3. Terri Monture @redindiangirl, Kanien'keha (Mohawk) Wolf Clan. 4. Melina Laboucan-Massimo (@melina_miyowapan), hailing from the Lubicon Cree community. 5. Wanda Whitebird, Bear Clan, a member of the Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Mi’kmag Nation. The event commenced with a mesmerizing traditional dance by @misschiefrocka, setting the stage for profound discussions. Topics ranged from the challenges faced by Indigenous People with disabilities in accessing traditional ceremonies to the health impacts of extractivism and the land conflict in Palestine. Connections were drawn between the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirits crisis and environmental solutions. Terri Monture's poignant intervention encapsulated the essence of our discussions: "We must work for [justice] as an overarching idea around how we're doing things. It's not just for the disabled people in our communities, it's for everyone. And if we can model this on a bigger scale, we're doing the work of #CrushingColonialism." For those who couldn't attend or watch live, the full video is available on Crushing Colonialism's Facebook or YouTube pages. A heartfelt thank you to our partners No More Silence and @sacredearthsolar, and @woollymammothtc for their venue. Together, we amplified voices and fostered change for our Indigenous communities. #IndigenizingDisabilityJustice #CommunityEvent #Inclusion #MMIW #Palestine IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: A dancer in traditional regalia and images of the four speakers.

Living so close to one of North America’s largest urban national parks offers me many opportunities to capture photos of nature. The issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) is deeply troubling and continues to devastate American Indian communities across the US. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, there are 86 Native Americans currently missing in the state (as of April 8, 2024). These numbers underscore the urgent need for greater awareness, resources, and action to address this crisis. Each missing person represents not just a statistic, but a loved one whose absence leaves a painful void in their families and communities. #MMIW #MMIP #MMIWG2S
