We specialise in classics, using the way of cutting from 1920s - 50s, trying to keep the old craft alive. I didn’t see where I fit in other barbershops in Belfast after Covid, I wanted more time with clients and to offer a premium service. So I had no choice but to create it. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR BUSINESS? When we open up, we turn on the heating, play some music, Palo Santo the space to cleanse the room and set the vibe for our day for clients to be welcomed. Normally we share coffees with our first clients. Phoebe our dog comes everyday so we walk her on lunch break. Nothing special or unusual happens in a work day but to me it’s special, knowing it’s all so fun and relaxed because I created it like this. When I think about that it feels crazy. KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW NOW, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT? If I could change anything I would care less about what others thought when beginning the journey. People are too busy focusing on their own life, no one really cares, and I mean that in the most positive way. It’s great to have inspiration but I would absolutely 100% not compare myself to others so much, I did this a lot and this, in my experience, can be very self-sabotaging. You must remember you create your own business ultimately to design your own life and bring more peace to your days. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR YOURSELF? I choose! Everything in my life I now choose, nothing is because I HAVE to. If I need time off, time to go to appointments of my own, take my lunch when I wish, bring my dog, not give my energy to things that are less important to me etc. I choose and I finally feel in control of my life at 31. We celebrated the #InternationalWomen'sDay, with #womenfolk we are cohesively working with to promote human elephant #coexistence. We organised a community storytelling event to document the #cultural and #ecological history of the Dhansiri-Sikaridanga region in #Udalguri district. Women from three peripheral villages in the landscape, gathered at the Ferenga Camp in Bhairabkunda, Udalguri, and actively participated in the event. They narrated their stories, which provided the #Aaranyak team with insights on the history of the region. The region was once inhabited by the Khair trees, which were uprooted during the flood in 1986, leaving the area mostly barren. Gradually the area was occupied by native grass species, forming a grassland-woodland mosaic. They mentioned that they derive benefits from NTFPs from the forested areas, encounter wildlife, including elephants, wild boars, and Asiatic black bears, frequently, causing distress. Nonetheless, they appreciate the presence of animals, and believe that both wildlife and people can coexist. Earlier, they faced economics losses in the form of livestock predation by large carnivores, which have reduced now. This potentially highlights local extirpation of the carnivores. While macaques and wild boars pose a threat to homesteads, dissuading the community from cultivating crops, they further added. It is a water scarce region, and farming is rain dependent, thus limiting them to cultivate only paddy. The people rely on river water for daily chores and drinking, which make them vulnerable to various water borne diseases. This event helped us establishing the history of the region, identify challenges faced by the community which will aid in implementing informed conservation action for well-being of the community and forests. This interaction was followed by a display of well-illustrated IEC materials highlighting the tried and tested measures to reduce HEC. Aaranyak's Rabiya Daimari, Mondeep Basumatari, Reshma Narzary, Abhijit Saikia, Didom Daimari, Bineswar Daimari, and Pradip Barman facilitated the event supported by SBI Foundation @sbifoundation.

It was an excellent #exhibition of high-quality #handloom products besides other home-made edibles prepared by #womenfolk of Tanti Pather, Konwabam and Kamargaon villages in #Dibrugarh district of #Assam that was also reflection of an encouraging outcome of #Aaranyak and British Asian Trust’s initiative to wean away villagers from their dependency on forest-based products in the greater interest of #conservation of #WildlifeHabitats. The village #women exhibited a wide range of products that included handloom products like traditional #Assamese mekhela chador, eri shawl, gamosa, stoles besides varieties of pickle and baked items before the visiting British Asian Trust officials, Belinda Stewart Cox and Auro Shashwat and Aaranyak team comprising senior scientist Dr Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, senior conservation biologist Dr Alolika Sinha, Senior official Zakir Islam Bora, and officials Bidisha Borah, Ezaz Ahmed, Dhantu Gogoi, Jiyaur Rahman, along with Village Champions Monuj Chetia and Rajib Gogoi on December 7. The villagers have been supported by Aaranyak and British Asian Trust under an initiative supported by Darwin Initiative (UK Aid) Biodiversity Challenge Funds with alternative livelihood options so that they stop depending on forest resources to supplement their income and thereby extend cooperation towards the efforts for #coexistence with Wild #Elephants. Thirty-five beneficiaries under the initiative exhibited their products while more than 70 people participated in the event that also featured an interactive session between beneficiaries and the officials of British Asian Trust and Aaranyak.
