𝗚𝗼 𝗬𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶’s artistic pursuit is rooted from his daily interaction and studies of nature and animals. His works combine elements of ‘Pop Art’ and ‘Ukiyo-e’, proven by an explosion of vibrant colours that signifies Yayanagi’s iconic aesthetic approach. 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝘂𝗸𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗶 painted in a uniquely curious style: ominous and joyful at the same time. The artist utilizes Washi (Japanese paper) and oil pastel in her creations, creating a remarkable texture that oozes softness and warmth. 𝗠𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗸𝘂𝗿𝗮 combines slip-casting and hand-molding techniques to create ceramic sculptures portraying infants and children with delicate expressions. Through the firing and hardening processes, the artist envisions her sculptures would eventually serve as vessels for people’s prayers. Harmony in Chaos: A Peek Into The Mind of Yasuo Sumi 📍Whitestone Gallery, Singapore 📅 until 2 Jun 2024 This solo show of pioneering post-war Japanese artist Yasuo Sumi explores his work and practice from the 1950’s onwards in the context of his participation in the avant-garde Gutai Movement. Displayed in Whitestone’s spectacular gallery in Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the exhibition showcases Sumi’s unique interpretation of the Gutai Movement’s core principle of the relationship between artist and materials. Using an experimental approach to painting, Sumi’s motto of ‘desperation, absence of seriousness, irresponsibility’ involved the use of unconventional methods and tools which led to the development of a new painting technique using an abacus. He would often work at floor level splashing paint at the canvas and then use an abacus to drag the paint into gestural, feathery, abstract swirls aiming to embody the Gutai aspiration of ‘a handshake between the human spirit and the material’. As with many other post-war movements, the desire to reject convention and embrace a new way of living resonates through the decades and the influence Yasuo Sumi had, along with other members of the Gutai Movement (also on display in an adjoining gallery), can be seen today in more instantly recognisable avant-garde artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono. This exhibition shows us that finding meaning and exploring new possibilities is as relevant now as ever.
