It is all in the details.... On one of my Power Point slides of my presentation for my BNI @mighty34nyc Networking Group, I showed this particular pencil and ink drawing that I had done for my husband in November 2020 as a part of my birthday present to him. It is of a watch movement of a @wempe_nyc watch I had gotten for him that year and made some additional details in Chinese highlighting my birthday wishes to him. It tied in with my personal art background and certain hobbies I like to do in my free time. For those who may be unaware, but I had majored in Art at my specialized Art High School (Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School @lagalumniandfriends in the Lincoln Center area of Manhattan - the "Fame" school). I graduated from there in 1997 and continued doing both printmaking at The Art Students League @aslnyc and different art drawings as a hobby in my spare time. Some may wonder? How does this drawing relate to being an insurance client advisor and insuring real estate and different kinds of business? Like this drawing, one of the attributes I pride myself of having is being detail-oriented. When I draw or make a print (etching, lithograph), my style of art is very detailed and precise. The same goes with how I am in my career as an insurance broker. I like to be detailed with business clients / real estate owners on the details of what is covered or specific exclusions in their insurance policies. And this drawing also highlights time. Time is very precious indeed - whether it is time spent with my husband, friends, or family or time spent advising a client - we all want to spend our valuable time on those who value it most. Incabloc is often used as a synonym for a shock absorber/protector in watches, but it’s actually the trade name of a specific shock protection system invented in the 1930s. This system was once considered such a mark of quality that watchmakers even printed it on watch dials (and advertised it on billboards)! Today, many other companies produce their own shock absorbers under different names (e.g., Seiko’s Diashock, Rolex’s Paraflex). Okay, now that the nomenclature is all clear, what exactly is a shock absorber? 🧐 Clearly, it absorbs shocks, and it does so to protect the movement of a watch, specifically its balance wheel. Without it, it really wouldn’t take much for the wheel’s pivot to snap and for the watch to stop ticking. Citizen is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of its first watch, and the party continues with its latest limited edition release in its Eco-Drive collection, the AQ4100-65L. Trust Citizen to best Grand Seiko in difficult-to-remember reference numbers. But on to the watch. Like most of the watches in this collection, this limited edition comes in the brand’s 38.3mm x 12.2mm titanium case, complete with a beautiful mix of polished angles and brushed surfaces to maximize light play. The standout on this special piece, though, has to be the dial. Inspired by traditional Japanese paper used on screens called Washi, the dial carries a dense cobweb-like texture in indigo and features several striations across. Rounding things up are thin faceted indices that carry the same mix of polished and brushed finishings as do the sharp hour and minute hands along with a brilliant gold seconds hand and a square date window frame. As the name of the collection suggests, the watch is powered by the brand’s proprietary Eco-Drive movement that is accurate to -/+ 5s per year, so you never have to worry about setting the time.
