Recently, life has been full of uncertainty, loss & change. Of course these are all constants in our lives, but they truly seem to happen all at once. Maybe that is life’s way of reminding us to always “count your blessings”, as my mom would say, and to always appreciate the little happy things. I recently learned about the word, ‘glimmer’: tiny micromoments of joy, and I’ve now made it my mission to find glimmers in all that I do. Whether going to the store or having hard conversations with people you love, glimmers are there, waiting for you to notice, waiting to put a micro smile on your face. This moment is a massive glimmer in time - there on the boat in the Sea of Cortez, soaking up the sun with the cutest pups around, casting at the most fascinating species… I felt a sense of happiness that had been missing for months, and I was deeply reminded that only you can pull yourself out of your own hole, and it ain’t easy, but the rewards are always worth it. Always chase the the things that make you happy… except people, don’t chase people. Fish, on the other hand, definitely chase fish! I love my GPS, but… As my friend and I found out, it’s not the best way to get around when you’re trying to circle the perimeter of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. And we took in some of my favorite beach parks as well. There is plenty to mourn about the vanishing of old Hawaii, but in some ways its spirit still roams the islands and pops up in unexpected places. In the 1800s, some of the most famed authors traveled here and got to experience the old Hawaii, including Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson. Mark Twain in Hawaii: Roughing It in the Sandwich Islands is one of the memorable books by Twain. In the 1860s, he was sent to Hawaii by a newspaper to provide his unique perspective. I was told it would be crowded and I wouldn’t love it anymore, but I do. Hawaii is still one of my favorite places on earth! One of the first things I did was take a stroll through Honolulu’s Kapiolani Park—more than once. The sunsets are as breathtaking as ever and the music still impromptu with a Hawaiian style. The monk seal, carefully guarded by the locals, was a new addition to one of my favorite beaches. Even the traffic seemed the same or slightly less to me—probably due to all the cars I encountered on my seven month road trip. After my ordeal in Los Angeles I remained solo for over 24 hours, but friends would be warm and welcoming in the days to come. I already want to return here! Although I consider Alan Brennert’s books to be one step above a beach read, that is not a bad thing. This highly readable author is thoroughly engaging and his bestselling books Honolulu and Moloka’i appeal to all types of readers. These historical sagas are place-driven with strong characters as well.
