What day is it? Oh, it's Monday! That was the first thought that ran through my head when I woke up this morning. However, we have had a wonderful whirlwind of a week in Virginia, mainly setting up and doing Luckett’s Spring Vintage Market. Tkaronto has been a meeting place for Indigenous peoples and other nations since time immemorial. The Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Métis have all held gatherings on this land to trade goods and knowledge. Toronto is within the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to share and care for the land and resources in the Great Lakes region peacefully. This agreement reminds us that we only have one dish, one Mother Earth we can take from. Building on this agreement and expressing our commitment, City of Toronto Public Markets Week will take place from June 16 to 22nd, aligned with National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21st). This week-long event will provide an opportunity to highlight Indigenous peoples’ foodways and spark conversations on how public markets, entrepreneurs, and the City can peacefully share and support each other in building a stronger, more inclusive city. Toronto has an informal network of more than 120+ diverse public markets with strong neighbourhood ties and unique character. Toronto’s markets are anchored in the community, embracing various models, audiences, and mandates. In 2023, the Toronto City Council endorsed creating the first Toronto Public Markets Action Plan to strengthen the City’s commitment to community-based markets and strengthen the sector. This plan will be the first in Ontario, Canada and North America. Public Markets Week is a time for market-goers, managers, vendors, and all Torontonians to join the “I Love Toronto Markets” Campaign. It is an opportunity to visit, learn, and celebrate the culture, diversity, and entrepreneurship of those participating in public markets across our city, emphasizing Indigenous, Black, and Immigrant communities.
