These traditional fishing huts on stilts are just so quaint, with raised boardwalks meandering above the the mud flats of the vast Rio Sado, it’s a beautiful, natural environment of birdlife and the home to fishing from the rustic raised walkways. It’s another part of Portugal which retains traditions in a beautiful setting with not much else around other than the small village of Carrasqueira. The peninsula of Troia is located just a few km to the West, a long spit-type area of thin land, with exclusive resorts (all looked closed still when we drove by) leading to a marina where a boat leaves to cross the Sado River for the town of Setubal (we drove the long way round to get there instead). The long stretches of white sands, pine forest, secluded walkways and often gravel dirt tracks which lead in and out to various beaches are empty this time of year, so driving was easy for us. However, you can tell by the amount of large parking areas, beach cafe’s and preparation for the Summer, that this West Coast is perhaps a very different kind of place come mid June when Portugal’s season begins (according to our travel guide book!). Overnight parking, even some day parking isn’t permitted for caravans and motorhomes with signs in many places on the coast….but that’s not to say it’s difficult nowadays, because it’s not. In fact, we think Portugal is very motorhome friendly still, all things considered. There are dedicated ‘Aire type’ local authority operated motorhome parking areas with a dump/fresh across Portugal and these are nearly all free, as well as some more regimented type private stopovers which are obviously fee-paying, but provide facilities such as laundry, showers, ehu etc. There’s plenty more to come on Portugal, despite us having arrived home this week, including: Lisbon, Porto, the remainder of the West Coast and the most incredible walking route which is possibly the highlight of our Portugal trip!! . . #portugal #fishinglife #westcoastportugal #vanlifetravel #vanlife4x4 #adventuretime #goexplore #europetrip #seetheworldwithme #travelblog #vantravel #campervanfun #motorhomeadventures

Kitchen, Ipiales, Colombia 10. Friendly helpers, Angel, Ecuador From Laguna de La Cocha, we travelled to the Sanctuary of Las Lajas, a basilica built into the Guáitara River Canyon. It was our last touristic stop in Colombia. The next day, we dropped off @sararaquelpm at the airport. When we came back to the van, after all this time having our friends over, it felt so empty and spacious. We decided to spent two more days in Ipiales just relaxing, as we had an intense colombian tour. We also had the chance to join our campground hosts in the kitchen to prepare some traditional south colombian dishes. And planned our next country’s route. We then crossed into Ecuador and had a wonderful surprise: we managed to find even better bakeries, better cheese and better beer! The country itself is beautiful, full of wonderful places to visit and it’s the cheapest country of our trip, so far. We visited the Reserva Ecológica El Ángel, on @nenitosviajeros recommendation. We got to stay in and visit the páramo, up high, in the Andes Mountain Range. It’s a beautiful and very special ecosystem, covered in frailejones. These plants capture the moisture from the atmosphere and release it into the soil, creating and maintaining water reservoirs. They only exist in Venezuela, Colombia and north of Ecuador. First time I spent a night in Ethyl was at Lake Isabella. First time I took the awning out was there, too. If it wasn’t for @theotherground I’d still be struggling getting it stored away by myself. We headed down to Nazare yesterday and stopped off a couple of times as we took the coast road ..... I felt like a kid that's been let loose in a sweet shop! Such amazing scenery and crashing waves we stayed in a parking lot that allows campervans to park up overnight right on the seafront. Nazare has been on our bucket list for some time now as it's well known for record breaking huge waves... wrong time of year for that, but still bloody huge, and it hasn't disappointed!! Throwback Thursday - Our first van, Talullah, which we owned for 7 years, alongside my sister's van at Geneva in Switzerland 🇨🇭. The vans weren't quite twins. We had different alloys and interior colour schemes, but they always caught fellow campers' eyes when we pulled up together. I loved the freedom our VW gave us, and it still remains my favourite ❤️ We had an amazing week here, completely unplanned as we were driven out of France by the rain, seeking sunshine. It was our first experience of camping in Switzerland, and we loved it. I'd visited once before as a teen, but the rest of the gang had never been. We love a good drive and this trip brought so many from our travel books, the ones in Morocco lasting several hours and even days and some in Portugal being just a quick detour from a main route lasting less than an hour. We almost drowned for this view! 👀 We spent last weekend visiting Cwmorthin slate quarry, we swam in the lake and agreed to go on a 'short walk' When your partner says let's go on a short walk, don't beleive him! I was not dressed appropriately for a hike! 😂 We walked over a slate hill and down to a mine, and then just sort of carried on..... Turns out that the land here is extremely boggy, to a point we were up to our knees in it at one point! Thinking back, this was so dangerous! We put Theo on our backs to avoid him from sinking down and tried to make it over the land as soon as possible! Nathan ended up falling into a river and couldn't touch the ground, lucky he got out because we had heard stories after the walk about people being sucked underneath the bog 😬 It was to dangerous to walk back so we had no choice but to carry on. So we ended up walking up a mountain to avoid the bog, and to keep away from danger, we followed a goat trail up the side of the mountain to stay fairly level, but this was a tough walk! We must of been out all day long.... We tracked our route on Google maps.... 3 MILES..... WE ONLY WALKED 3 MILES! 🤦🏻♀️ It felt like we had hiked like 7! How did it take all day 😂 I don't regret it though, no matter how hard it was 😁 and we are safe! We had such a brilliant day yesterday 🫶 set off at 9am and did the most peaceful 4 mile walk up through a forest and saw some spectacular views...defo set us up for the day. Drove on and found another cracking stop, popped our boots on, and did another 6 miles 😍 we got back to the van sweaty, tired and happy...we were in bed by 8pm and slept like logs 🙌 .
