Founded in 1933 as an experimental education institution, Black Mountain College emphasized interdisciplinary arts and attracted a diverse faculty and student body. Despite closing in 1957 due to financial challenges, the college had a significant impact on American art and education, with many of its alumni and faculty becoming influential figures in their fields. I have so many thoughts in this book and they all pretty much boil down to: what did I just read? It’s a short book so everything happens really quickly, and, at first, there’s not a lot of characterization that gets balanced out by the plot and the idea that really the people aren’t really people because they don’t exactly have the time to figure out who they are. Later, the characterization makes up for some of the wildest plot points I’ve read and the best plot twist. While I was working at Art Cologne, I also had the time to walk around and see what was showing at the fair. I was curious, or there were already artists showing work connected to their experiences with the war between Ukraine and Russia. The Russian invasion was on the 24th of February 2022, so you would expect that 1,5 years later, there would be some visual outcomes. In the booth of Voloshyn Gallery, based in Kiev and Miami, I found the captivating work of Lesia Khomenko, a multidisciplinary artist from Ukraine who, since the Russian invasion, attracted global media discussion and attention with her work. The transportable, rolled paintings in her self portraits capture Khomenko’s own experience of living through the early stages of war and evacuation and witnessing warfare in real time. The artist is reconsidering the role of painting: deconstructing narrative images and transforming paintings into objects, installations, and performances. Her artworks have mocked Soviet Socialist Realism’s erroneous attempt to create a perfect utopian society and fantasy people, and she has probed past state-sanctioned creativity and its long-lasting impact on current artistic practices. “The cannery operation inside the Ruskin Cave located near Tennessee City in Dickson County, 1896.” — The Ruskin Colony was a utopian socialist colony and existed on the Tennessee City property from 1894 to 1895, when it moved to the Ruskin property. It stayed there until 1899, when it moved to Waycross, Georgia, and then dissolved in 1901. Five Hundred Dollars was charged to become a member of the colony. A water reservoir was built on the hillside above the cave and gravity fed water to each home on the colony. All together, seventy-five structures were erected on Ruskin’s near 1,000 acres. Despite all of its financial success, the end of the Ruskin colony came swiftly. Heated disputes continued to occur over various issues until the group felt that it could no longer continue. The end came in 1899 with remaining members moving to Ware County, Georgia. From the days the utopian ended, the property became a college (1900-late 1930s), then resort (1940-1950s), then campground (1950-1960s) before it sat vacant for many years. In the 1980s a country star bought the property, but due to a flood in 1985 everything was lost and the property was left behind. In 1986 a drug and alcohol rehab opened for a year before closing. On October 14, 1987, the Murfreesboro-based Family Life Ministries International bought the Ruskin resort. Ruskin enjoyed a modest revival in business in 1988. The Family Life Wilderness Program was instituted and offered a program for the rehabilitation of youthful first-time and non-violent offenders. The program was the first of its kind in Tennessee. Then in 1999, The Jackson Foundation, Inc. leased the property. The Foundation ran a summer camp for boys and girls for 4 weeks during the summer from 2000 until 2013. Today, The Foundation offers the cave and surrounding grounds as a venue for weddings, corporate events, and other gatherings. “A collection of photographs of Rugby, Tennessee, a utopian colony built in 1880, August 13, 2023.” Images 1-3 are of the Thomas Hughes Library; 4-5 are of the Christ Church Episcopal and 6 is of the Tabard Inn that burnt down in 1884. — The village was founded in 1880 by Thomas Hughes, a well-known social reformer and author in England. Inspired by the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hughes envisioned a utopia for England’s ‘second sons,’ men who’d grown up in wealthy British families but were doomed to inherit nothing because of their birth order. Within the first year, several families arrived and a large hotel, three boarding houses, a commissary and several private homes were constructed. The ornate Tabard Inn served as the colony’s social center and attracted wealthy tourists from across the region. But in 1881, the colony suffered its first severe setback when typhoid fever from the inn’s well killed two hotel guests and five colonists. In 1882, The Tabard Inn reopened after a thorough cleansing and the colony rebounded. A library was built and British and American publishers helped stock it with donated books. By 1884, the colony had 400 residents and between 65 and 70 Victorian structures, including a church, school, sawmill and cannery. Unfortunately, the colony’s troubles continued. The magnificent Tabard Inn burned to the ground. Lawsuits and land disputes prevented colonists from owning the land they’d come to claim. A series of unusually severe winters disheartened Rugby’s new residents. Finally, in 1887, Thomas Hughes’s mother, a central figure of Rugby life, died, and by then, most of the colonists decided they’d had enough.
