Meet JAY GREGORY! President / Local Coordinator @witchesbetwixt I follow an eclectic path that is a blend of Wicca, Traditional Witchcraft and Chaos Magick. I’m also Ordained by the Church of Spiritual Humanism. Philly Pagan Pride has been a huge part of my life. The first event I attended was in 2014, in 2017 I joined the Board as a Vendor Coordinator and in 2019 I took on the role of President & Local Coordinator. The work going into coordinating this event can be stressful at times and difficult to juggle with other life responsibilities but it’s worth it to see it all come together the day of the event. To me, Pagan Pride is all about community and supporting each other. I take my role in this organization very seriously because I know how much good it does for our community. Many of us don’t have a lot of opportunities to be around other Pagans on a regular basis, and at least, for one day out of the year, I can be a key player in creating a space in which the community can socialize, network, educate and advocate for each other. Beltane/May Day/ Walpurgis Nacht/Wonnezeit is coming in a few days. Remember to do your house cleaning so when Frau Holle returns from the Wild Hunt, she doesn't slice open your belly and fill it with straw and rocks for being lazy, living in filth, clutter, and dust. It's also time to get together and dance around the May pole to dance away the snow and bring in the Spring. In modern times, communities that celebrate this time of year often crown a May King and May Queen. The May Queen and May King often represent fertility, growth, and renewal. As symbols of spring and the rebirth of nature, they embody the vitality and fecundity of the earth during this time of year. Jumping over a fire during festivals like Walpurgisnacht and Beltane holds deep cultural and symbolic significance. Fire has long been associated with purification, and jumping over it is believed to cleanse and purify individuals by burning away negative energies, diseases, or misfortunes from the past year. This act symbolizes a fresh start and renewal as one enters the new season or year cleansed and rejuvenated. Additionally, fire symbolizes the sun and its life-giving properties in some traditions, particularly in Beltane celebrations. Jumping over the fire is seen as a way to gain the sun's blessings for fertility, vitality, and abundance, marking the coming of spring and the fertility of the land. Fire is also considered a protective element against evil spirits, witches, or other negative forces. By jumping over the fire, participants believe they are warding off these energies and protecting themselves from harm. The act of jumping over a fire is often a communal activity that fosters a sense of unity and connection among participants. It's a shared experience that strengthens bonds and brings people together in celebration. Furthermore, fire symbolizes transformation and change. My Butzemann, Wagméza Tȟó, is now in his place to watch over the garden for this season. In Pennsylvania German folklore, a "Butzemann" is a protective spirit or scarecrow-like figure that is created to ward off evil spirits or protect a home. The corn ceremony is done to activate a Butzemann. Ears of corn are gathered and cleaned. A prayer or blessing is offered over the corn, asking for protection and abundance. The ears of corn are then placed in the hands or pockets of the Butzemann figure. Some people believe that speaking words of activation or intention, such as asking the Butzemann to protect the home and its inhabitants, can further empower the figure. After the ceremony, the Butzemann is believed to be activated and ready to fulfill its protective role, with the corn symbolizing its power and connection to the land. Voryuul nacht 1 What did you learn this year? Who are you nowadays? Are you happy? Are you content? In Urglaawe Voryuul is the yearly deep dive into who you really are and what drives you. It's a twelve night observance with a different topic to meditate and think on each night. Some would call it shadow work. The first night starts kinda light but as it progresses it gets a little more intensive. On the first night you light twelve candles and before you begin meditating you snuff out one candle and let the others burn. Each of the following nights you start with one less candle. Until now, all of my tattoos have been specifically related to my Lakota culture. I was raised with that side of my family. I didn't come across my German pagan culture until later in life, so I just now did my first tattoo related to that way. Gebo is because love and relationships is a gift. You can't give only a part of yourself and let fear and vulnerability hold you back from gifting yourself entirely. You also need to be sure you are giving the best version of yourself. As suggested by the design, it's also an exchange of energy. Raidho is because relationships are a journey together. There will be different exchanges of energy throughout the journey but people need to remember that the ride lasts longer than temporary turbulence. There's nobody I'd rather have along me on this journey of life, love, and relationship, than my family, my son, my friends, and my future partner. DREAMS - Pay attention to your dreams. My Germanic ancestors always come through strongly. I have had vivid visions of their sadness leaving their homeland to travel to a new country. My Palatine German ancestors came over in 1710 to colonial America when the 30 years war ravaged the Palatine region of Germany. A small portion of this group settled in New York and the rest traveled to Pennsylvania to become the Pennsylvania Dutch. I have always had an affinity and connection to Odin and Frigga. The Urglaawe faith, a heathen tradition comprised of descendants of the Pennsylvania Dutch believe that the goddess Holle, sometimes believed to be another form of Frigga, led the Palatine Germans to the new world in part to preserve the old faith and Gods. Both Frigga and Holle are connected to weaving and spindles. These are symbolic of beings who work with the fates. It is believed that Frigga knows the fate of all but does not speak what will be. I had a vivid dream recently of pricking my finger on a spindle - similar to sleeping beauty. In the dream, Spirit told me that this represented my ancestors (my blood) entering into an agreement with the goddess Frigga/Holle. I inherited the gift of astral travel from my Germanic side and use this ability to be of service to Spirit as a psychopomp - a guide to spirits to the afterlife. This has made me wonder if those gifts were the result of the oath made to Frigga/Holle - who are both psychopomp goddesses. I do this work almost every night in my sleep by helping earthbound spirits aka ghosts transition to a higher spiritual plane. It is good to remember that Spirit gifts come with the calling to serve. Sacred reciprocity is the hallmark of good spirit relationships. I give to Spirit and Spirit gives to me.
