🇬🇧 What can I say. Another beautiful place that stole my heart. Petra is something out of this world. You really need to spend at least two days here to fully enjoy The Rose City. I am glad we came here in the winter time. It is cold but also less touristy, which means better views and no queues. 😊 Here are some interesting facts about Petra: 🔸️The name ‘Petra’ is derived from ‘petros’ which means ‘rocks’ in Greek. The name was probably given to the city due to its carved sandstone and rock structures. 🔸️Petra is believed to be one of the oldest cities in the world. Archaeologists think that the city was established in 321 B.C. 🔸️Petra became a World Heritage Site in 1985. 🔸️The treasury, also known as Al-Khazneh (in the picture), was actually built as a mausoleum and crypt by the Nabateans. It is also supposed to be the resting place of the Nabatean King Aretas IV. 🔸️Some Nabateans still live in the city (tribe B'doul). 🔸️Petra consists of over 1000 tombs.There are four tombs that make up its Royal Tombs, which are The Urn Tomb, The Silk Tomb, The Corinthian Tomb, and The Palace Tomb. 🔸️The entrance to Petra is through a 1.2 km narrow passageway called the Siq, meaning gorge. Years of rain and wind have led to the formation of this entry point flanked by high cliffs on each side 🔸️Only 15% of Petra has been discovered by now. 🔸️Petra has been featured in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade movie. And there is much more than that! I have never been a big fan of an ancient history, but being in places like Petra really makes me want to dig more and learn a bit about the past. 😊 It's like travelling in time. Petra, Jordan, UNESCO World Heritage Site and One of 7 Wonders of the World. We were up very early to get on the private taxi and get ahead of the big tours so we can enjoy the place in relative peace. And I think that was the day when the last straw broke camels back and we decided to switch to mirrorless cameras. If not to get into the technical specs - mirrorless cameras are lighter and we were so sick of dragging 45kg combined weight on the important tours rains or shines. However, the souvenir vendors in Petra can sense your nationality even if you keep your head down and mouth shut. I got hit with магниты, сувениры, дёшево, скидка, the second they spotted me. Mick confused them a bit with his cosmopolitan features so he provoked a pot pourri of aimless marketing exclamations.
