The Monastery. 850ish steps up to get to this place but totally worth it. Listen guys... if you know me, you know I'm not a hiker. I pretty much regret every time I let friends talk me into it. I swore I was retired after my experience on Rainbow Mountain in Peru. It's just not my jam... so with all that being said, let me say this... The Monastery hike is not bad at all! From me, a devoted non-hiker! First of all, it's not 850 steps straight up. The steps are over a long winding distance and most of the time you're not really by sheer drop offs or anything. There are a few areas where things get tight with passing donkeys taking up tourists — a bit cringeworthy to go up on a donkey in my opinion... 😬 (Petra officially talks a good game re: proper treatment of animals but I didn't think it was much better than most other places I've seen. If you can't walk it, I'd strongly urge you to not go. I just don't think it's fair to the animals to be forced to ferry tourists up a mountain in desert heat.) Also, if you go in the early morning, the air is still cool and fresh and while there are many stalls selling stuff on the way up (also aggressively at times), once you arrive, you're in peace. There's a good sized cafe right in front of the Monastery but those guys were polite and chill. They seem to have learned that simply being polite is the best way to get tired, hot, and harried tourists to buy shit. This was the peace I'd been searching for. I sat out on one of the benches with a delicious cold lemon and mint juice and just enjoyed. Also, was pretty excited that the hike back is all downhill so I'd done the more difficult part getting there. If you're a morning person or not, it's worth it to get up and explore Petra early. You skip the crowds but also the daytime heat. Double check the opening times, I was told both 6AM and 6:30AM but each morning I arrived between 7:15 and 7:30 and that was nice. The Treasury at Petra. Worth getting up early to beat the crowds but this picture certainly doesn't give the full story. Quickly snuck this picture by asking another tourist to snap me a quick shot and then I got out of this area as fast as possible. While I was hoping for peace and quiet and to just sit and marvel in the glory of the Treasury for a while that was a pipe dream. The vendors at Petra were hands down some of the most awful I've encountered across my travels in many countries. Pushy doesn't begin to describe it. Jamming their phones in my face to show a picture of the famous Instagrammable treasury from above shot and asking if I wanted to go up there (I didn't), offering to take pictures, asking if I wanted a camel ride, asking if I wanted a horse ride, over and over on repeat. One guy comes up, you turn him away, and 4 more come up asking the same thing. It was far too aggressive and put me off quite a bit. The Monastery is one of the largest monuments in Petra, measuring 47m wide by 48.3m high. It was built on the model of the Khazna but here the bas- reliefs are replaced by niches to house sculptures.
