The Sword was among the regalia used at coronations before the introduction of Absolutism; it was used for the last time at the coronation of Frederik III in 1648. #sttryphoncathedral 'is located in the city of #Kotor, one of the best preserved and most beautiful medieval fortified towns in the Mediterranean. It was built in honor of #SaintTryphon (local name #SvetiTripun), the patron and protector of the city, on the same site where an older church had already existed long ago. That earlier church was built in 809 by Andrija (Andreaccio) Saracenis, a citizen of Kotor, where the remains of the saint were kept after being brought from Constantinople. The cathedral was consecrated on 19 June 1166. #KotorCathedral is one of the largest and most ornate buildings in Kotor. The cathedral was seriously damaged and rebuilt after the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake. The April 1979 #Montenegro earthquake, which completely devastated the Montenegro coast, also greatly damaged the cathedral. It has been salvaged and restoration work has been done. The Romanesque architecture, contains a rich collection of artifacts. Older than many famous churches and cathedrals in Europe, the cathedral has a treasury of immense value. In its interior there are frescoes from the 14th century, a stone ornament above the main altar in which the life of St Tryphon is depicted, as well as a relief of saints in gold and silver. The collection of art objects includes a silver hand and a cross, decorated with ornaments and figures in relief. Iranian dissident and expat Masoud Molavi Vardanjani was shot dead in Istanbul, Turkey in November 2019. Masoud worked as a cybersecurity specialist for Iran’s Defense Ministry for several years until he was investigated for criticizing the Iranian government online. He fled the country in 2018 and settled in Istanbul, where he used his Telegram channel “The Black Box” to post documents revealing evidence of foreign operations as well as corruption within the Quds Force and other institutions. He also published a video of the interior of a purported signals intelligence van in Tehran operated by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (slide 4). While in Istanbul, Masoud befriended Ali Esfanjani, unaware that Ali was reporting his activities back to the Iranian consulate. Ali also planned the attack on Masoud the following year. On November 14th, 2019, Ali led Masoud on a walk at night through the upscale Şişli district when a gunman sprinted up behind them at full speed, shooting Masoud several times at close range and narrowly missing Ali himself. The shooter was later identified as Abdulvahap Koçak, who was employed ostensibly as a gardener for Naji Sharii Zindashti. Zindashti (slide 5) is a high-profile narcotics trafficker who has facilitated several international slayings and kidnappings at the behest of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security. Koçak had already carried out at least one other attack in Istanbul in 2017 on Zindashti’s orders. Ali escaped back to Iran three days later using a false passport in the name Abbas, provided by an Iranian consular official. That official was arrested in February 2021 (slide 6). Following Masoud’s death, Turkish police arrested 14 - 16 suspected conspirators (sources vary) including the gunman. Abdulvahap Koçak was sentenced to life in prison and four other suspects received lesser sentences. The other accused conspirators were acquitted at trial. Ali Esfanjani and Naji Zindashti both remain at large. The Federal Reserve as expected kept interest rates unchanged for a sixth straight meeting Wednesday while also signaling that potential cuts may not arrive as early as many in commercial real estate would like. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The central bank kept its benchmark interest rate at between 5.25 percent and 5.5 percent and said in its post-meeting statement that reductions would not occur until there is sufficient progress with shifting inflation toward the Fed’s 2 percent target. Last week, the Federal Reserve decided to maintain the Fed Funds Target rate at 5.25 – 5.50%. Market expectations on the Fed’s policy rate have been extremely volatile; however, according to Fed Funds futures contracts and implied rates derived from the yield curve, the market expects a steady policy for the remainder of this quarter—and cuts as we close out 2024. Last week, the Treasury’s quarterly refunding statement was released, which remained mostly unchanged with a few increases in auction sizes at the back end of the curve—namely, a $3B increase in the 10Y, 20Y, and 30Y auctions. Theoretically speaking, increases in coupons are generally seen as bearish for asset prices because investors must make risk adjustments on duration as the market absorbs all those bonds. However, the Treasury has made it clear that they will support the market by getting rid of some old and illiquid Treasuries through their buyback program. The buyback program has been a plan for a while now because of the ever-diminishing demand for long-term Treasuries that has forced many dealers to take on increasing portions of the latest long-term auctions. Needless to say, the back end of the curve has been struggling for a while now. As per the short end of the curve, we will continue to see an increase in bill issuances as we approach June, at which point there will be a temporary reduction due to corporate tax filings. The Treasury is starting to flirt with that 20% ceiling that they have on bills (in other words, of the total U.S. debt outstanding, T-Bills currently make up about 20% of it—a number we haven’t seen since 2020). Although issuing bills during a time when you are struggling to get bids at the back end of the curve seems like a no-brainer, flirting with this limit is dangerous because you expose your tax base to refinancing risks. What’s more, as I just stated, issuing a lot of T-Bills is a telltale sign of a struggle to find buyers of long-term debt.
