So now I can reveal what I was making with the absinthe… I made two variations, but these are both Turkish Delight (or, as the Victorians called them, “Lumps of Delight” - so that’s what I shall be going with!) - standard rose (the pink, obviously) and the rather vibrant absinthe green. I couldn’t resist using the Sonic… um… pizza wheel to slice it into cubes - purely for the fun of the sound effects 😂👍🏻 I will entire ‘fess up, here, though and tell you that it didn’t stay looking this pretty for long (less than an hour) before both flavours just turned so wet - despite the thorough coating with cornflour/icing sugar - that the rose ones were pretty much looking like sumat from a 50s B movie (yep - The Blob) 😭 I now see why, when you buy proper Turkish Delight (we have a fab Turkish supermarket nearby) each individual piece has its own little spot in a box. I’ve managed to rescue all the green cubes but only a few pinks and they’re all sitting separately on heavily dredged parchment thinking about what they’ve done. Outside my window this morning there is a pair of blackbirds 🐦⬛🐦⬛working tirelessly to build their family home in the laurel tree. So much effort and purpose with all the garden birds just now. Spring activity is in full swing. But my own Spring activity has been hampered by two massive rookie mistakes in this Seed Packet blanket over the past day. Suffice to say, this latest section of flower squares has been put in and pulled out - twice. Now it’s third time lucky - I hope. Like who is stupid enough to join twelve squares to the blanket before they realise they’ve attached them on the wrong side? Then take them out and reattach them on the right side, only to find out once they get the end of the row that they had miscounted the previous round, and so the squares weren’t actually fitting along the side? Me, that’s who. But one positive thing I can say about being a lady of advanced years - it comes with an amazing level of patience! Twenty years ago this would have been the absolute end of the whole thing, or at the very least be accompanied by the sort of language that would have had me banned from Instagram. Yesterday I just sighed quietly and got on with the job of frogging. The second time though, the sigh might have been a little louder. I guess the blackbirds keep on going against all adversities, so I’ll take my cue from them. And the bigger this blanket gets, the more I’m in love with this yarn. It's only Wednesday but it feels like this week has been going on forever! Late last week I discovered I couldn't send e-mails from 2 of my accounts, Ummmmm. So I start to have a little read, then read a bit more then more and more and more and more. Tried following step by step guides, watched You tube videos, phoned a friend. Next day we do it all over again and again and again. The language used is double dutch to me. I do this for 4 days - 4 days of my life I'll never get back. Life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows and just chaos. This winter kicked my butt. Seasonal depression was heavy. A couple of health things were all over the place. Life has just been handing me the new challenges. I’ve backslid, way more than I believed I would/did, and I’ve tried getting back to it and failed and tried again and failed and here I am trying again and I’ll Keep trying. I walked after work when I didn’t feel the best. I walked in some insane wind. I walked during my kids soccer practice. I closed all of my rings for the first time months and walked two miles for the first time in forever. More learning and learning…. I had somehow acquired a 6” embroidery ring. Have no clue where it came from, but I’ve been moving it from spot to spot in my room for months thinking I could find something to do with it. Last night I did. I had been watching YouTube and Pinterest videos of fibre artists creating round woven pieces, so I decided to experiment with my little ring. First step was wrapping the frame. I used my heavy cotton thread that I use for warping my loom. This gave me a stable edging to hold the warp thread in place rather than sliding on the exposed wood. Then I spent over an hour trying to warp it across horizontally and also around like bike spokes. After many failures, I walked away and slept on it. I must have processed the instructions in my sleep because this morning the warping came together first time. It’s not perfect by any means, my spacing is inconsistent and my centre is off centred, but it definitely looked like a bicycle wheel. I started weaving. Going around a 6” warp with straight tabby stitch goes pretty quickly but isn’t very interesting. So I decided to play with what I had made up yesterday. Green background with a needle felted flower first off. Then I pulled it apart and worked with a white background, some fuzzy acrylic “fur” and some red roving. Added a red ceramic bead in the centre and dangles some Pom Poms and there you have it. I’m going to get a larger ring and practice with this style more. The first go round of glaze on this one (the last two pictures) just didn't do anything for me, so back into the kiln it went with new glaze. And while I love the refire colors on the inside especially, the bowl decided to crack a few times on the bottom with this last fire rendering it relatively useless. I have learned so much over the years when it comes to furniture. It isn't just "slapping paint" onto a piece of furniture. It's about fixing things, it's about proper technique, it's about using new tools and products.. When I look a back on all that I have learned (and messed up) I am pretty happy with how far I've come in this journey. I know that I still have so much more to learn. The bad, the really bad and the minor miracle. Let's be honest here, some days riding is hard. REALLY hard. Dressage is a wonderful journey, but neither of us find it easy. My legs are too short for my horse, he's a bit of a chunky, lazy turd at times that my legs aren't overly equipped to deal with 😂 BUT we're out there giving it a go. It's really easy to only show/talk about the good bits, right? Well, I'm happy to shout about the shit bits, too. Sunday, I had 2 tests. My first was a straight Novice, then I had my Novice Freestyle music. The venue was full of very lovely looking, flashy moving horses with magical gold and silver riders breezing around. With the venue hosting Regionals in 2 weeks' time, there were many getting a prep run in. I ignored them and did my own thing rather than be intimidated, but I knew scoring would be tougher than normal. Going last in a class full of quality combos was going to be tough for us. What I didn't expect was Mr Polite (Dudley) to go to pieces in the arena, and then I obviously forgot how to ride and resolve what was sticking. It started so nicely, too 🤣 It was horrendous. I've no idea why. I wasn't nervous or distracted, but it just fell to pieces. I scored the lowest I've ever scored in BD at just over 61%, but it was 100% scored right. I have no explanation, although I did discover his girth was tighter than normal so maybe he was uncomfortable 🙈 We nearly went home, but I decided to carry on and do my music. It was a much much better experience, and although I created some tension and a sight jog by chasing the walk a little too much, it was error free. Again, I didn't expect to score big as the gold riders floated around, but we had a solid 66+% and a win in my bronze section. I left quite down hearted, despite the music result. The straight Novice class was embarrassing, the result a blip in his results. Don't get me wrong, I've always said we aren't big winners... but it doesn't make an uncharacteristic result feel any better. At a loss, I say goodbye to my van. I had such plans for it, that sadly weren’t achieved. I learnt lots from the whole journey from purchasing, owning and building. I got to saw wood for the first time and build a whole wall grid inside. I really enjoyed making the reels for my progress and record the process, including the whole frustrating saga of finding the right rivet gun (which surprisingly got the highest amount of views out of all my reels?!) - I guess the world found it RIVETING 🤣 And I really had to how to overcome disappointment when a massive hiccup in the project suspended everything, and ruined plans of driving it up to Scotland for adventures and SWS school. Go to the desert, do some soul searching and figure out if I want to go after outdoor education jobs or retake the EMT class.
