Tiger sharks are curious and will approach divers very close, sometime even bumping into them. Sharks are generally not aggressive towards humans and do not consider us as prey. But these are also powerful and dangerous wild animals that should be treated with respect and caution. The growth of shark diving has had many positive impacts by promoting shark conservation and creating incentives for local communities to protect sharks as a tourism resource rather than as a fishery resources. However there has also been a rise in complacency among divers about the potential dangers of shark diving. Diving with sharks is not a casual activity, but something that should be done with care and an understanding of shark behaviour. With any wildlife interaction, your safety and the well-being of the animal comes before your photograph.

As Sri Lanka experiences a record heat wave on land the impacts are being felt underwater as well. These images from Pigeon Island and Coral Island in eastern Sri Lanka show extensive coral bleaching caused by high sea temperatures. Similar coral bleaching is also being reported from the south coast and northwest coast. While bleached corals may recover if ocean temperatures subside soon previous bleaching events have had significant coral mortality exceeding 90% on some reefs. This is the 4th major coral bleaching event to impact Sri Lanka following previous events in 1998, 2016 and 2019. Although temperature spikes and coral bleaching are not new, they are occurring more frequently due to climate change. A hawksbill turtle surfacing to breath at Pigeon Island National Park. In the background are extensive stands of bleached corals as a result of high sea temperatures. This is the third major coral bleaching event to impact Sri Lanka in the last 8 years following bleaching in 2016 and 2019. Hawksbill turtles are highly dependent on coral reefs as feeding grounds due to their diet which consists mainly of sponges, anemones and algae. The loss of coral reefs due to events such as coral bleaching may pose significant threats to other species that use coral reefs such as hawksbill turtles.
