What is the thyroid? Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck under your skin. It's a part of your endocrine system and controls many of your body's important functions by producing and releasing (secreting) certain hormones. “Thyroid Cancer is the good cancer” a statement that couldn’t be further from the truth. This disease has such long lasting, life changing effects on you that you will never be the same person you were prior to your diagnosis. I cannot stress then importance of checking your neck!! Don’t turn a blind eye. Don’t be naive and think “it’ll never happen to me”. The most important change I want to see is educating people and professionals and make them understand it isn’t a good cancer. THERE IS NO SUCH THING!! This week I felt a client starring at my scar while we spoke...at first I questioned if something was in my teeth from lunch😁but quickly remembered my scar. • It’s been over 4 years but let me tell you life without a thyroid is not what I expected!! • Reflection 👉🏼Who would have thought after having a surgery to better our health, we would have to spend so much time worrying about our hormones being balanced, chasing inflammation and not to mention managing all the other physical symptoms some of us deal with every day. Removing your thyroid (the master gland) is like trying to steer a ship with no captain. • I just want to say that you are amazing, living without a gland that regulates everything in your body from the oxygenation of your mitochondria to temperature of your big toes! • People don’t get it, and that’s okay...I do. I see you. • So take a big deep breath in... right past that scar that cracked you open and smile to yourself, smile at how far you have come, how much hard work you have put in. • You are so worth it. • Also a reminder that’s it’s possible to take back your role as captain and feel empowered despite your diagnosis and experiences. • Ohhh yeah also show off your damn scars and let them stare. ✨It’s #thyroidcancerawarenessmonth and I am a proof it gets easier. Recovery following a thyroidectomy varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual's overall health. Immediately after surgery, patients may experience soreness and swelling in the neck area. Hospitalization may be required for more extensive surgeries, while less invasive procedures may allow for outpatient treatment. Pain management and monitoring of thyroid hormone levels are essential components of the recovery process. Patients should follow their surgeon's post-operative care instructions carefully and attend follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery and proper thyroid function. 137.366.2024 - belated instax self- portrait and thyroid cancer update. I saw (via a 5 minute phone call) my endocrinologist a couple weeks ago. Since my ultrasound was clear and blood work is good, I won’t need to do the radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment and my next ultrasound will be early next year. All good news but it’s still just a little weird the overall nonchalant attitude of docs I’ve seen about thyroid cancer. (Which I understand is due to the very low mortality rate and slow growth…but still adds to my “cancer imposter syndrome!) 8 months post op and I’m still dealing with minor side effects and getting the thyroid meds adjusted. But it could also be perimenopause or getting older or ??? But I still don’t really feel like myself. Trying to be patient with the process. Self-portrait from my visit to Oahu to see @sunnywave808 and take @charlet_o3o’s grad photos 🖤 second slide definitely summarizes the last couple years for me (and so many others!) 🖤 #photoaday #iphone3662024 #instax #monochrome #selfportrait #thyroidcancer #thyroidectomy #recovery #cancersucks

And the answer to that question is… Because your body believes you are vulnerable. You under-ate or under slept or pushed yourself too hard physically for a long (years/decades) time Or maybe you got an infection or had surgery or had a car accident. Or it could be you had a relationship breakdown or a bereavement or just a life full of such traumas. Any one or a combination of the above is enough to convince your body you need protection. And histamine is its emergency survival button. So if you want to figure out your histamine symptoms - focus on communicating abundance to your body - not scarcity. ✅follow @symptomreversalformula for more information on improving or reversing chronic symptoms and conditions #guthealing #chronicpainwarrior #chronicfatiguesyndrome #paleolifestyle #colitis #functionalhealth #functionalmedicinedoctor # #thyroidwarrior #thyroidectomy #guthealingfood #aipprotocol #functionalhealthcoach #functionalmedicinefoods #thyroiditis #crohnsfit #crohnsdiseaseawareness #nutritioncoaches #ibslife #ibsfood #gerddiet #ibddiet #rheumatoidarthritisawareness #lupuswarriors #perniciousanemia #carnivorish #lowhistaminediet #hashitmotoshealing #ibsfood #ibsawarenessmonth

Via @chrisbyfordyoga My cancer story , continued . It’s most likely not cancer , said the jabroni jabbing the longest needle I’ve ever seen into my neck 30 times . He was chuckling a little bit as I winced at the sight of the needle moving in and out of my neck . Obviously by the pic shown here , he was wrong . It was cancer . This is me last year after my thyroidectomy , were they also removed 2 of my 4 parathyroid glands and 3 lymph nodes that the cancer had spread too . I can understand where Dr. Stabby Pants was coming from with his comment . Men are far less likely to get this type of cancer , especially at my age . But I had already beaten those kinds of odds when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis 18 years prior . On April 4th, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer (papillary carcinoma). Even though the prognosis was hopeful, the thought of surgery, and the continuous scans and checkups to detect/ prevent reoccurrence is anxiety provoking enough. For several months, I’ve struggled with extreme fatigue and weight gain, not understanding why. To my surprise, all bloodwork at the doctor’s came back normal, and it was not until my doctor recommended I get an ultrasound of my thyroid gland to fully check everything. Following up with a biopsy, four cancerous nodules were found on my right thyroid gland. This may never be an issue for some, but this is a great reminder, not just to myself, but to anyone, is the importance of listening to your body. If something is feeling off, do not ignore it. These pictures are a little glimpse into the last two weeks of surgery and recovery, and also an attempt for me to embrace this new normal in my life. Fast forward to today, I can officially say that the hemi-thyroidectomy was successful in removing my cancer (yay) and fingers crossed for no future reoccurrence 🤞🏼 #thyroidcancer #thyroidcancerawareness #thyroidectomy #thyroidcancersurvivor #papillarythyroidcarcinoma

SO many of my clients have "normal" labs and are told they should feel ok even though they don't.  This is the thing about labs.... result ranges aren't based off of optimal levels, they're based off of averages from the standard American.... which we know are far from optimal.  This is especially true when it comes to thyroid testing.  Check out the below normal vs optimal thyroid levels.  Normal ranges are what most docs use as a barometer for healthy thyroid function, whereas optimal is what many integrative or functional medicine providers will go by.   Thyroid dysfunction stems from toxins, pathogens, nutrient deficiencies and poor gut health.  Once these get addressed, the thyroid can heal. I was initially diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016 shortly after graduating college and had my thyroid removed. After being cancer free for over 5 years, my doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering detected a suspicious lymph node after years of close monitoring. About a month ago, I was diagnosed with a thyroid cancer recurrence and metastasis to the surrounding lymph nodes. Last week I had lymph nodes in my neck removed, and 9/10 lymph nodes included cancer cells. “While recurrence and metastasis are some of the scariest words a cancer survivor can hear, I want to recognize how fortunate I am to not only have access to the best medical care just a walk from my apartment, but also to have caught the cancer so early (in 2016 and again recently). I am also beyond grateful to have had the most incredible family, friends and medical team supporting me throughout the past 5+ years! Thyroid disease can make you feel extremely tired because the thyroid gland, shaped like a butterfly 🦋 in your neck, plays a crucial role in regulating your metabolism. When it’s not functioning properly, as in hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), your body’s processes slow down, making you feel fatigued and sluggish 😴. Conversely, in hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), your body’s systems are in overdrive, which can also lead to exhaustion.⁣ ⁣ People might not understand this fatigue because it’s not just about feeling sleepy 😪. It’s a deep, pervasive tiredness that doesn’t always get better with rest. Unlike typical tiredness, thyroid-related fatigue impacts your physical and mental energy levels, affecting your daily activities and overall quality of life 🏃‍♀️🚶‍♂️🧠.⁣ ⁣ Additionally, thyroid disease symptoms can be subtle or similar to those of other conditions, leading to misunderstandings or underestimation of how debilitating the tiredness truly is. People might see you looking normal on the outside 🌞, not realizing that inside, you’re fighting a constant battle with fatigue 🌪.⁣ Cre: @docs_sznajder_gandolfo . . . #thyroidcancer #thyroidcancersucks #thyroidcare #thyroidcancerawarenessmonth #thyroiddiseaseawareness #thyroidchange #thyroidfood #thyroideyedisease #thyroidcancerawareness #thyroidawarenessmonth #thyroidlife #thyroidsurgery #thyroidwarrior #thyroidectomy #thyroidcancersurvivor

• S T O R Y T I M E • pt one In the beginning of August, I found a lump the size of a golf ball on the left side of my throat. For a while I ignored it thinking that it was just inflamed and it would go away. After about another month the lump was still there and it almost looked bigger. Eventually I went to see a doctor about it and I was under the impression that I would have answers pretty quickly. If you know me personally, I am very impatient and I like instant gratification. So it’s safe to say that the testing and the process of elimination was the hardest for me. I finally met with my surgeon and the ball got rolling. The mass was causing me to have hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism- overactivity of the thyroid gland, resulting in a rapid heartbeat and an increased rate of metabolism I was experiencing heart palpitations, weight change, and a LOT of stress. I remember only allowing myself to cry once a day about it. I wasn’t crying because of the weight or the acne or any physical changes. I was crying because I was scared af. There were more questions than answers and I was getting really frustrated and emotionally tired. Few days late but oh well, being told at the age of 20 that you have cancer after years of doctors not listening about a horrible pain is devastating, it also puts things into perspective and you learn what and who is important, but a year, 4 rounds of chemo, 28 sessions of radiation and a 9 hour surgery I am now cancer free and In remission. - Cre: @indiwags . . . #thyroidcancer #thyroidcancersucks #thyroidcare #thyroidcancerawarenessmonth #thyroiddiseaseawareness #thyroidchange #thyroidfood #thyroideyedisease #thyroidcancerawareness #thyroidawarenessmonth #thyroidlife #thyroidsurgery #thyroidwarrior #thyroidectomy #thyroidcancersurvivor

Some #fun tings. We met with a thyroid surgeon and learned my thyroid tissue is completely dead, there is not even a speckle of light, as well as it is almost completely covered in micro-cysts ! I have chronic thyroiditis (duh) and enlarged lymphnodes (but on both sides so no worries). 🙂‍↕️ This is new information as all yrmc has ever said is “increased vascularity” lol. With that, my Hashimoto’s journey has been difficult alongside with lupus, but we got good info from the thyroid surgeon and I feel much more informed about my own body now! Stay tuned to see if we take this bad boy out or not. 😬 #thyroidectomy

I’ve decided to break my radio silence and give an intimate life update. . Recently, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer (🦋) and had a total thyroidectomy done. I have no idea if there’s more left. It’s been described as the “good” cancer if you were to get any because the spread is slow and high survival rate. At first, I was like “sweet, I’m going to be okay” and now left thinking “am I really okay?”. On the outside, I LOOK fine. On the inside, I’m not. . I’ve felt off since my operation. Constant fatigue and lack of vibrancy, brain fog, symptoms that hurt at times, it sucks. I’ve been having a hard time accepting that feeling minimally normal and functioning, now depends on a pill I take everyday. My future treatment and long term medication, now puts me at risk for different cancers and heart disease. I now have to adjust to taking preventative measures for those things as well. . My plan is to simply continue documenting life. Its been difficult finding information on how to live with my exact issues. Perhaps by sharing life, I can share bits and pieces of encouragement to others along the way. Here’s to figuring out the latest hurdle, life with no thyroid🥂 . . . #thyroidcancer #nothyroid #lifeupdate #cancersucks #thyroidjourney #thyroidectomy #thyroidectomyjourney

Alright, it's 2024 🎉 and we're starting the year off with this stat. The first time I saw this, it blew my mind.. More than HALF of people with thyroid disease don't even know they have it.. 🤯 as disappointing as this stat is, it makes complete sense to me. Thyroid disease is probably one of the most poorly investigated and managed health conditions. I talk to so many women who struggle, and I mean, really struggle with hypothyroid symptoms and get absolutely NOTHING from their GPs. 😳 I've personally diagnosed so many women with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's because for some odd reason, a TSH >4 combined with debilitating symptoms doesn't seem to mean much to some doctors.. Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month 🦋, I'm going to be sharing lots of information about thyroid disease that I think EVERYONE needs to know. Knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you can do to better your health. ✊🏻 So, I hope you enjoyed my unfiltered thoughts and would love to hear your thoughts on this as well. Let's chat in the comments below ⬇️ And as always, if you need more support with your thyroid health, my DMs are open for you ❤️ Cre: @drvongnd . . . #thyroidcancer #thyroidcancersucks #thyroidcare #thyroidcancerawarenessmonth #thyroiddiseaseawareness #thyroidchange #thyroidfood #thyroideyedisease #thyroidcancerawareness #thyroidawarenessmonth #thyroidlife #thyroidsurgery #thyroidwarrior #thyroidectomy #thyroidcancersurvivor

I never get over how common it is to be a person with thyroid cancer whose disease has been minimized by well-meaning practitioners, friends, family, colleagues and strangers alike. I know I, for one, didn't get the opportunity to pick and choose when I went cancer shopping. I'm not sure when the memo went out that this is the best thing to say to a newly diagnosed or announced thyroid cancer patient, and I'm sure the intention behind it is to provide comfort. But, that is not how most, if not all, of us receive it. When someone tells you you have "the good cancer," you are automatically minimized. How do you respond to that? "Yes, I am just so lucky?" "You're right, who needed that gland anyway?" You're put in a position of either defense (to prove that, no...this is no fun and games laughing matter), or retreat (you know...my experience really doesn't matter that much anyway). My point is, while most of us do not need chemo or external beam radiation (unless we had medullary or anapalastic thyroid cancer), and much respect to the suffering that these types of cancer treatments entail, we DO have to deal with the scare, rapidly, of cancer, followed by a permanent chronic condition. And we don't typically get directed to the proper emotional supports for this, or for the long-term journey that lies ahead. So instead, just a note to all the folks out there dealing with people with thyroid cancer - I might suggest, instead of "telling" (labeling, minimizing or categorizing this cancer), ask the question: "how do you feel about all of this?" What you learn might be surprising. The moral of the story: best not to call someone's something "good" unless you want a piece of it :). Have you experienced this? It doesn't have to be this way!🧠🌫 Having an underactive thyroid can mean not only feeling sluggish physically but also mentally. This can look like being unable to recall information, feeling spacey, lack of clarity, difficulty finding words, or being more forgetful. Perhaps you've walked into a room and completely forgot what you were doing. Same friend, same😮‍💨 This is worrisome for most and can inhibit day to day tasks and demands. Depression, anxiety, and mood changes are also prevalent among those with hypo & Hashi's. Thyroid hormones are crucial for healthy brain development and influence cognitive function throughout life. Low thyroid hormones⬇️ (hypothyroidism) and inflammation🔥 caused by autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) can both impair cognitive function. But there is hope! ❤️ You can lessen these symptoms by correcting underlying imbalances and optimizing thyroid hormone levels. This can look like taking the steps to: ✅️Discover causes and reduce chronic inflammation. ✅️Effectively lower stress hormones and improve adrenal health. ✅️Balance blood sugar levels by improving what, when, and how you eat. ✅️Discover the right thyroid medication/supportive supplements to achieve optimal thyroid levels. Want help with implementing these strategies to clear the brain fog? These are all areas addressed inside the Thyroid Recovery Program!🦋 Cre: @lisha_thyroid_rd . . . #thyroidcancer #thyroidcancersucks #thyroidcare #thyroidcancerawarenessmonth #thyroiddiseaseawareness #thyroidchange #thyroidfood #thyroideyedisease #thyroidcancerawareness #thyroidawarenessmonth #thyroidlife #thyroidsurgery #thyroidwarrior #thyroidectomy #thyroidcancersurvivor

Long post alert…… For the last half of 2023 I’d been silently suffering with my Graves’ disease diagnosis. I’d lost a substantial amount of weight that I couldn’t seem to get back, my eyes were/are bulging and I constantly look like I’m in a state of surprise. My resting heart rate was too high, so I had stop exercising, which is a main source of my sanity, and the sensitivity to heat made me absolutely miserable this summer. Grave’s disease has also been making my depression and anxiety worse, with no relief in sight. I made the decision to get total thyroidectomy on 12/29. I’m over a week out post surgery and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about what’s to come. I removed an organ that controls sooooo many parts of my body, so of course there will be an adjustment period. As I continue to heal, and adjust all I can do is be kind to myself. To those of you who knew I had the surgery, and have checked on me, thank you, it’s a process but I’m doing okay. If anyone out there is having issues with an overactive thyroid and wants to talk to me about my experience, I’m more than happy to talk about it. What news! Please show your love and send your prayers I am speechless .I am now a “Cancer Survivor” writing this brings tears to my eyes and so many emotions running through my body. It has been a long journey and a scary journey at that, but one that brought to believe in myself like I never did before. It made me find strength when I didn’t have any, it make me appreciate life’s little moments and made me love deeper! I Learned to let go of things I can’t control. But just because I can’t control what life throws at me, doesn’t mean I can’t control how I handle it. Cancer made me value motherhood more than I’d ever have imagined. I could go on and on, but I just wanted to share that you can over come life’s ugly curves! Thank you to everyone who was there in this journey with me, praying and cheering me on!
