On 15th April, Elizabeth, or 'Bess' Throckmorton was born. The Throckmortons were an influential gentry family from Coughton Court, Warwickshire (more on the house here http://bit.ly/1BF1PZn ) Half of the family remained strictly Catholic and were involved in serial plots against Elizabeth I, and half became Protestant, including Bess’ own father, who was Ambassador to Scotland. Bess was appointed as a maid-of-honour to her distant cousin, Elizabeth I with whom she was in high favour, until her clandestine relationship with Elizabeth’s favourite, Sir Walter Raleigh, was discovered. Initially imprisoned in the Tower of London, and then banished from court, Bess retired to Raleigh’s estates in Dorset where she brought up their children during his voyages to the Americas. Bess long outlived her husband, who was executed in 1618. 👏 Creative Economic Development Award – Brandon Chandler 👏 Brandon Chandler moved back to Throckmorton County in recent years, and he has hit the ground running putting his talents to use for the community. His love and passion for being a chef and his culinary arts degree have propelled him to serve this community in many ways. He recognized a need for fresh food products and combined that with his talent to open Making Ends Meet Market. In addition, he has served meals at the Throckmorton Senior Citizens weekly luncheon. Some slight timestaining and foxing as to be expected. Sir John Throckmorton 5th Baronet was a prominent English Roman Catholic, Author and Freemason. Another version of this portrait by Edridge is held by the National Trust at Coughton Court, Warwickshire Home of the Throckmorton family since 1409. Henry Edridge was born in Paddington, apprenticed to the mezzotint engraver Wiliam Pether. From 1784 he studied at the Royal Academy Schools, where his work was much admired by the President Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1786 he was awarded the silver medal and in the same year began exhibiting at the Academy, showing a total of 261 works up until his death in 1821. As well as being a highly talented miniaturist, Edridge painted works on paper and his small, full-length figures in landscapes gained him great repute and success, painting prominent figures such as Lord Nelson and Prime Minister William Pitt. Twenty-one generations of the Throckmorton family have lived at Coughton Court since 1409, when they inherited part of the estate by marriage. They still live here today, and over the last six centuries there are many stories to tell, including that of the gunpowder plot. The ringleader of the gunpowder plot was Robert Catesby, son of Sir William Catesby and Anne Throckmorton of Coughton Court, and nephew of Thomas Throckmorton. He spent time at Coughton as a young boy and was a charismatic and forceful character. He conceived the plot and became its inspirational leader, recruiting 12 more members. Francis Tresham, cousin of Robert Catesby and the son of Sir Thomas Tresham and Muriel Throckmorton of Coughton Court, joined the conspiracy late and came under suspicion of having betrayed it. On 12th February 1571, Sir Nicholas Throckmorton died. One of the sons of Sir George Throckmorton of Coughton Court (more on the house here http://bit.ly/1BF1PZn ) Sir Nicholas was a diplomat and politician in the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth. The Throckmortons were divided between Catholics and Protestants, with Nicholas in the latter group. His first royal appointment was in the household of his half-cousin, Queen Katherine Parr. Whilst it is probable that it was Throckmorton who warned Mary of the plot to pass the throne to Lady Jane Grey, he later became implicated in Wyatt’s rebellion. Under Elizabeth, he was Ambassador to France, and became close to Mary, Queen of Scots. Whilst he remained loyal to Protestantism and Elizabeth, he was in favour of the Queen of Scots being named as Elizabeth’s heir, and was caught up in the plan to marry the Scottish Queen to the Duke of Norfolk, resulting in a brief spell of imprisonment at Windsor. He died in 1571, leaving a widow and several children, one of whom, Bess, married Sir Walter Raleigh.
