Seeing things like this as I have researched The Cohens Has made me fall in love with the small southern town of Jesup even more. 🥰🥰 #GoodPeople The Cohens were a Jewish Immigrant couple with no ties to Jesup. Sam was from Poland/Russia and Adele was from Germany. Sam came to the US at with two of his brothers at 19 years old and Adele came with her parents and siblings at 10 years old. Sam came to Jesup in 1903. At that time this was a part of the US where the K-K-K was on the rise. Yet this man was welcomed back to his home of 3 years with his new bride by most, if not all, of Jesup’s citizens. He went on to serve as An Alderman of Jesup, Served on The Jesup School Board, The Jesup Trade Board and was elected Mayor 4 times. When he passed away he was serving out his 4th term (served 7 years and would have served 8.) That would have been the most years served by any mayor of Jesup this far. Also, If your family has ever worked for the Sea Island Shirt company or the Manhattan shirt company in Jesup, The good Mayor made that job possible for you. I love the square the original boards for the exterior of the house. How beautiful is The Mayors House? • USA Today called it the most anticipated resturant opening in Dallas, Texas this year! • For those of you who are new here, my husband Mitch and I, invested in this new venture with our precious friends, @Marth27 (aka Belle Back on “The Day of our Lives” + Netflix Star) and her husband AJ Gilbert. This will be their 7th resturant and first in Texas! (Anyone ever eat at Luna Park in LA, San Fran or NYC?) • Chef Graham Dodds, the exquisite culinary talent, plans to serve up brunch, lunch, and dinner with dishes like fish & chips and duck tacos with pickled onions, plus Americana faves including fondue and fried pies. • History behind the house: Often referred to as "The Centennial Mayor," George Sergeant presided over the 1936 Texas Centennial celebration which hosted special guests, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt Sergeant, who served as Chief Justice of Dallas' 5th Court of Appeals, was also the Mayor of Oakcliff from 1935-1937. Built in 1910, the home was Sergeants’ private residence which he shared with his wife, Mary, and one surviving son. After his death in 1971, the house was left to his son and then to a caretaker. The home fell into disrepair but still housed many artifacts including scrapbooks, letters and a handwritten 'thank you' note from Mrs. Roosevelt herself. If you live in Dallas, you've probably heard about the 115 year old Ambassador Hotel burning to the ground this past May (it was the oldest hotel in Dallas). It was a devastating blow to the city and to those of us who love and appreciate the historical landmarks that make this city so beautiful.
