On May 14th, we were honored to host an incredible event in partnership with Schneps Media, celebrating the Power Women of Grace at Gracie Mansion. We had the privilege of recognizing four outstanding honorees who have made significant contributions in their fields. Vicki Schneps (President of Schneps Media) was presented with a Proclamation and in recognition of AAPI Heritage Month: Meera T. Ghandi (Humanitarian), Helen Nguyen (Executive Chef), and So-Chung Shinn (Soprano Vocalist and Arts Patron) were all presented with citations as the Women of Grace. Their dedication, passion, and achievements inspire us all. The evening came to close with a beautiful rendition sung by So-Chung Shinn and accompanied by instrumentals. Isabella Banks Markell (1891โ1980), Gracie Mansion, c. 1944, oil painting at @cwamericanmodernism We're in the middle of a week of focusing on women artists and are turning to our friend Chris Walther and his amazing collection for an artist that we haven't featured before. Markell was born in Superior Wisconsin and studied in France as well as at the @pafacademy and the Maryland Institute and with Eliot O'Hara and Robert Brackman at schools that each had founded. She painted New York City throughout her career, with work that often featured the harbors, rivers, and bridges of the city. This painting captures the NYC Mayor's mansion along with the Hell's Gate bridge in the background. Several boats are navigating the area with smoke in the air, giving a real sense of activity. In addition to painting, Markell worked as a printmaker. It was my honor to present a proclamation on behalf of @nycmayor Adams officially naming March 14, 2024 โPercent for Art Day.โ #PercentforArtNYC allocates one percent of the budget for eligible, City-funded construction projects to create permanent, site-specific public art. Since its inception, the program has worked on more than 450 projects throughout the five boroughs, including more than 100 ongoing commissions. The accumulated value of completed projects is over $65 million in todayโs dollars.
